As usual i don't really put too much attention in pre launch rumors ( for example pretty much everyone thought the SF 70 would have been a mediocre car and instead was great. On the other hand the SF 90 was a piece of crap ). The only thing that multiple sources confirmed is that the car will change between the reveal and second week of testing. We'll see if this is true or not.

So we have confirmation that we'll see a more "basic" car at the first test and the full aero package arrives for the second one but I am still eager to see the car, I think that mechanically the car should already be finalized so we should see a glimpse of the suspension layout for this year and also the macro aero concept should also give some ideas about the direction our team is taking for 2020... so there should be plenty to talk about.

What's the purpose of that? As I see it, there are two explanations.

1. They don't finish in time.

2. They want to know the basic data of the car. With aero. If the aero isn't as good as they had hoped, they can rule out problems of the basic chassis.

Am I missing something?

This is more something that makes sense at the start of a regulation circle imo. Not in-between, especially with less testing and no tyre changes.

Is that even confirmed? If not, I assume it's just the Italian press concluding from Mercedes doing it last year that it has to make sense somehow.

Though maybe it's just a bit lost in translation. It's quite usual to bring the final package to the last test, just not as extreme as Merc last year.

No one said as extreme as Merc last year. They only said that the car will be different, especially in the second week of testing.

I read multiple times "similar to Mercedes last year"

Well, if it's so, then it's stating the obvious, since everyone brings a different package to the 2nd week of testing, pretty much always.

no doubt the car in the second week will differ only in a couple of rear and front wing endplates and will be sold as a totally new aero package.

It's probably gonna be something in between. Last year Ferrari just brought a different floor in the second week while Mercedes brought a completely different car.

A conservative car in week one makes sense, as they'll likely just want to ensure that a high rake philosophy (which has been strongly rumoured) can work alongside the current front wing. They can also put the PU through the necessary tests.

Then in the second week they can bolt on much more aero and correlate everything in relation to the wind tunnel.

I read somewhere that teams don't really need a lot of testing these days, their already simulate their cars very accurately on the bench/wind tunnel and other simulation tools.

Testing is more about confirming results on the track than any real pure development work... I assume these days tests are more important to understand the tires properly, which is something that simulations cannot reveal entirely, you need to have the rubber on the track to understand if everything works as it is supposed to.

Dunno man...after being last year's winter champions, and how crap the car was 3/4 of the season, i prefer to just wait for Australia.

https://www.corriere...600894a18.shtml

"Among the particularities it will have white and very visible numbers that reflect the design used between 1979 and the early 1980s. There will also be a particular version of the Tricolor."

"The 2020 machine is the result of the development of that of last year, and it is natural that this will happen in 2021 with regulations and tires unchanged. Surprises, however, will not be missing, both in colors and graphics. A particular version of the Tricolor will appear, a choice also connected to the place of presentation. In Reggio Emilia, in 1797, the Italian flag was born, the mayor of the city, Luca Vecchi, will deliver to the stables an historical version of the banner. Confirmed the matte varnish (to save weight), the red will be darker, less toned to orange, and with new touches. Like the numbers that mark Charles Leclerc (16) and Sebastian Vettel (5): they resume the design used between 1979, that of the Jody Scheckter World Cup, and the early 1980s. White numbers, very visible, characterized by a thin profile, of the same color, which surrounds each digit. It is a tribute to a period of great competitive intensity, closely linked to the unforgettable «27» by Gilles Villeneuve."

"Second act, the technical menu. The wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels) has remained unchanged, the weak points of aerodynamics have been rethought to obtain more load in the slower and more guided sections of the slopes. For this reason we will see a more complex Ferrari in the appendices, less «clean» in the forms but not «beaten» forward in the Red Bull style. More elaborate and ductile precisely to go strong in the corners, where on certain circuits the 2019 single-seater also lost more than 1 '' from Mercedes recovering in part thanks to the speed on the straights."

"Simone Resta, returning from Alfa, joined the group of frame builders (Enrico Cardile and David Sanchez) . But the design philosophy of the front and "bellies" does not change, some of these solutions have been taken up in general concepts by both Mercedes and Red Bull."

"On the engine, research continued to have more power from the V6 and from the electrical side and to control consumption: the power unit is a theme that in the past season has given significant joys but also a series of controversies that will not be able to continue, with the hope that the Federation establish clear criteria and parameters to avoid speculation and gossip that damage F1 above all."

"Last act: in the hunt for the name, the abbreviation SF1000 is particularly popular as a bet: it would celebrate Ferrari's 1000th GP in F1 that falls in Canada, but it can slip in France if the Chinese GP as it seems will be canceled or postponed. And the most rational SF20 (meaning 2020). In the end it is an irrelevant detail, all that matters is that this new Red is more effective and more fortunate than her last older sisters."

Yes, last year was really really weird, I can't remember our team having such a good preseason test and than being so far off the mark... but to be honest if one would remove Merc from the picture we wouldn't have looked so bad... I think it's more about Mercedes really hiding their performance really really well, than our team having a complete fail.

"This year the car has been completely redesigned," Piero Ferrari told the Italian media.

"We hope we have done everything possible to eliminate the problems of last year. I think a good job has been done, we have good hopes."

Okay, so the SF1000 can't have the same front wing endplates as the SF90?

Am I missing something?

Then perhaps you don’t realize how late parts are made.. it’s literally sometimes hours before shipping..

It would allow then to fine tune things. Week one baseline from a a set point a month ago for example.. see how well it was modelled.. keep adjusting and then fly out new stuff.. it gives a huge chance to correlate design versus track performance.. if they go with Australia spec out of the gate and it’s way off predications they don’t have a means of comparison of where things started to go wrong.

All indications are they are going with a pretty heavily modified concept so perhaps a lot of last year isn’t applicable to this new SF1000. Going slow on data collection for their internal evolutions could make sense. 2 years they messed up midsession advancements with the floor, last year targets were a bit low and their slippery idea didn’t work out for most of the tracks and evolution seemed stalled so updates didn’t work out great. So they have reason to data collect on track with different spec before the season starts as a key task.
