Somene has told me they read in an old Autosport, that early 1973, because he had driven the Can Am Shadow, Carls Pace tested a DN1 Formula one car. News to me.

Can anyone confirm this?

I wouldn't have realised either Steve, but Tony Southgate confirms that Carlos did test the DN1, in secret, at Silverstone.  Motor Sport June 2003, towards the end of the article.

If he did surely we'd have heard? Although these things always get out in the end... Especially bringing a set of tyres though, amazing.

Excellent link to Motor Sport, John.  I must spend more time there.

I wonder if Hill had the same junk tires all season.

Wonder if the Shadow Can Am team used junk tires in all their years, since the grudge was against Nichols.  There were some years when they were only a little bit slower than the McLarens, and consistently so.  I always wondered about that, if it was the design of the car, or preparation, or what.  Maybe they were just as good in '71 and '72 and the tires held them back.

Team Surtees used Firestones in 1973.  Goodyear must have given the tires to Pace - how else would he have gotten them - perhaps they regarded him as a potential rising star and wanted to lure him away from Firestone.  Which seems to have meant that Goodyear was willing to give Shadow good tires depending on their driver, as they must have done with Revson in '74.

Interesting stuff.

Could it be possible that the Pace Shadow test took place in 1974 rather than 1973?

Southgate mentioned him as Brabham driver which Pace was from mid 1974 onwards.

But then it would´ve been more likely a Shadow DN3 although the team started the saison with the DN1

Tony mentions being dissapointed with the teams qualification at Silverstone wonder if that was '73 International Trophy, '73 British GP where the DN1's qualified 25th and 26th, or '74 International Trophy the fact that Tony mentions Carlos as a Brabham driver suggests '74 International Trophy, but even then Carlos was still a Surtees driver ?
