I guess this deserves its own thread.

According to Cadena Ser in Spain, Alonso will be racing for Renault...soon.

https://cadenaser.co...332_457561.html

-Agreement would be announced next week.

-Renault wants him "as soon as possible".

This has legs, the journalist behind the information has been always very close to Fernando.

Don´t know, was just listening Cadena Ser and they interrupted the show to announce this, that ´s the only thing they said, as soon as possible.

That part didn´t make too much sense to me, to be honest, too many pieces would have to be involved...

The article implies they want him to drive this season. If that is true they must have a plan to kick Ricciardo out before the season ends, if they can make it work is another matter.

Does McLaren still owe him money? Does he still have a link with them?

One thing is sure, Zak Brown is pushing for Alonso at Renault:

Could ZB get Ricciardo immediately in exchange, while Renault is still paying for his salary?

I can´t see Renault paying Ricciardo´s salary and Alonso´s at the same time, no way.

Unless Alonso would be willing to take very little (if any) money?

Not sure he has something to gain at this point. Hopefully not, but due to age and being one year out, it's likely he'll do a Schumacher.

Because of McLaren's financial difficulties? Renault's future now being better sorted out?

Alonso going to Renault and Ricciardo to McLaren immediately would also free Sainz to go to work with Ferrari immediately...

Don´t forget about Vettel´s contract...

It is just not realistic to me that Alonso could race this year.

It's been a while since we had an Alonso thread...right...RIGHT?!!!!! :stoned: It's not like we could've discussed this in silly season because this is an official announcement from Renault...oh wait...

Sainz wouldn't necessaily be racing for it to be useful to Ferrari. Just some simulator time... and getting to know the culture inside the team.

Mid season shuffle perhaps... Vettel off for a Sebattical (heh) and sainz, Ric and alonso all make an early switch. It’s already less than 6 months til January, and it’s unusual to have all the moves confirmed before the season kicks off... might make sense to just bite the bullet and shuttle the pack now.

Beh.  I don't see it.  Why go back to a midfield team... to do what?  Fight for 7th place again?  He's got bigger fish to fry.

Would be good if he comes back in F1, as long as he isn't returning to the italian garbage.

Like?

He has won WEC, he doesnt want IndyCar, the one time events like Indy 500 he can race even when he is in F1 or after this.

Perhaps he reckons that Renault might have a decent shot in 2022, so he wants to be around for that and if it doesnt work, then he can just race elsewhere.

Is this thread always so busy after a sudden rumour? :p

Ricciardo kicked out mid-season? Paying off his massive salary? I really don't see it, not even if Alonso wants to drive for free.

Would be great for F1 to have Alonso back, but only if Renault can provide him with a proper car.

Much as I'd love to see Alonso back, that depends on him actually having a car capable of running at, or near to, the front. Which Renault doesn't have, and is unlikely to have for some time. So what's the point of returning if he's just scrapping for minor points again?

Unless Alonso has suddenly become a much less competitive individual (which I doubt he has, otherwise he wouldn't still be trying to complete the Triple Crown), then this doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. Still, I guess Renault need some good news following Ricciardo's departure, and try to get rid of the general feeling that this is a team without a great deal of direction or strong leadership.

If Alonso really is going to Renault then i hope for Bottas sake Mercedes re sign him for 2021 and don't promote Russell.

If Bottas gets ditched by Mercedes then Renault was the obvious choice. Which could leave him in a difficult situation.

I'd like Alonso in F1 again but I feel abit like with Schumacher return on 2010 he's had his time in F1 and time to move on and let the younger guys come through.

Alonso to Renault could potentially hold Russell at Williams. Can't see Mercedes putting Bottas in the cold especially if Lewis has a say on his team mate choice.

In my opinion Alonso only stands to lose from a return. He's not gonna win another WDC so what's the point?

I won't be surprised if Vettel leave Ferrari before season ends. He's now in fight with Binotto. One bad move on race track and he's out for good.

Leclerc’s fanbase reminds me of Alonso’s. I like to see how they react once both clash on track.

Schumacher was three years without racing. He was clearly rusty in 2010 up until halfway 2011. Alonso was in different categories, staying fit, etc. It is not comparable.

Regarding Bottas, obviously he is good enough to deserve a drive in F1, but honestly if he would be out of the grid it wouldn't make a big difference to me.

I hope this is true! I have not always been Alonso's biggest fan but I really miss him in F1. I would love to see him come back, preferably in a car that can compete for wins (and the title).

I’d love to see Alonso come back, but let’s be honest here: him joining Renault after all the guff about being done with F1 unless a seat in a winning car opened up this would be an almighty climb down. Having said that, would love for him to crush Ocon as a final act.

“As for the coming seasons we have several options, we have our Academy with young drivers that we really believe in. But we won’t know anything more until December, when the F2 finishes,” he added.

“The team needs an experienced driver who is able to take the project forward, with a good level of motivation.

“We don’t want to be the last in line in the drivers’ market, we want to find someone who is ready to commit to us.”

Engines will become less and less important with the new rules, you can hardly update them anymore, so if Renault builds a fine chassis for once, who knows what is possible.

I think the rationale behind Alonso to Renault (if true) would be to shine at the midfield, proving that he hasn't lost any speed and hope for a vacant seat at one of the top teams (Hamilton retiring or Leclerc not fulfilling expectations, for example).
