I have watched, sadly, over the last several decades, as the trophies at F1 races have become less and less reflective of the magnitude of achievement of winning or making the podium. I remember, just a couple of years ago, watching a trophy fall apart in Lewis Hamilton's hands. While there are - in a normal year - an ever increasing number of contests on the F1 calendar you would think that, given the tens of millions each promoter spends, they might add another $20 or $30k for some decent hardware to be handed to the top three finishers.
The Trophies Are Terrible!

The trophies are indeed mostly terrible. Full marks for the tracks that do something distinctive, like Hungary and that no doubt very expensive stuff that looks nonetheless like it’s sourced from the living room sideboard of the worlds’ grandmothers.
Also to the British GP for their loaning out of the beautiful but now fragile RAC trophy, these things build continuity - a link to the past from the present.
And also of course the very best trophy, the Indy500 with all the little metal faces on it.

Is the same trophy rotating year after year, or a new one every year?
The Stanley Cup being a different sport still the best of them though.

I kinda liked the one from the Austrian GP. They were unique. I hope they have a different trophy for the Styrian GP though.
I hate the sponsor-designed trophies.

The Santander ones were a definite lowlight, agreed.

Do you mean the wooden carvings of the circuit layout? I thought they were rather nice.

There's just one Borg-Warner Trophy: it's permanently housed at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The idea with the carved faces is that instead of the trophy being added to a driver's collection, the driver is added to the trophy's collection. Logical really.
Winning drivers do get a miniature replica (the original is taller than many race winners), known as Baby Borgs.

I do believe those were prohibited a few years back. Those dreadfull Santander trophies were the lowlight for me.
Edit:
These I meant. Those were handed out at every Santander sponsored race. Hideous.

I't the same trophy for Indy 500, they just keep adding winner's faces to it each year. The winner is permanently given a small size replica of it.

So which organizers still hand "real" trophies, the kind of which the emoji is based on?
EDIT: Bahrain seems to be one.

Why is the Silver Surfer riding a cog and why does he look so annoyed? He looks like he's just arrived at the bank to pay in money only to find it inexplicably closed.
Forgive me raking over old ground but this one is new to me.

The worst of it all, the Sonic was completely mold out of plastic. To me; a trophy should be out of metal. A differnt material can be used if it is really special like the porcelain one from Hungary or the wooden ones from Austria.

Agreed!
I cannot remember where or what because I was barely old enough to go to school. But I remember the commentators in Norway once talked about how much it meant to get a podium as a certain track due to the trophies. They were special, unique, properly made etc.

In trying to find footage of Lewis frankly and publicly drawing attention to the disintegrating red plastic Santander nonsense they tried to pass across instead of the RAC trophy, I found this hilarious story of Hamilton in 2105 seemingly summoning Bernie and the F1 trophy guy to let it be known that the standard of trophies was indeed piss-poor.
?! What race was this^^?

That's Canada I think? Trophy looks like it's made up of the track layout

I thought these 3d printed Santander gems were what got Lewis' ire going - think one fell apart on him
Always thought the Australian GP trophy was classy - modelled on a steering wheel from one of Sir Jack Brabham's cars iirc...
Edit - oops didn't see Laster's post above re: Sir Jack's steering wheel - guess we've both got good taste in trophies!

Maybe tastes change... The dishes and one's like Austria's are easier to hang on a wall or put on a shelf. If I received the winners trophy from Austria and the one Hamilton is holding from Bahrain it would be the former that I would actually integrate into my home. The old ones look, well old.

Can't we bring the giant laurel wreaths back? They were beautiful.
Maybe Zandvoort can go vintage on the wreath and trophy, just to be different

Oh yeah they should bring wreaths back too. I have some great (to me) photos from the Indy 500 of Alex Rossi wearing his.

Bobby Unser's wife once ranted at me about how tiny the baby Borgs are. I have no idea if she thought I was someone else. My influence on such things is fairly minimal, truth be told.

This is neither of those but impressive in its own terrible way, via racefans' 2015 Chinese GP race report :
It looks like the killer frisbee-type weapon that Xena Warrior Princess used to hurl at people instead of using a sword, yet it's the flame decal detail that looks like it's been carefully peeled from someone's bike that really makes it.

At least it's practical though! And looks much more solid than a Santander logo!
