Massa got given this trophy at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix which looks like an offensive weapon. You definitely wouldn't want to throw this one in the air!

(Although in full fairness to him, I think he had much bigger things to think about at the time!)

Pikes Peak, 1916. THIS is a trophy!

Later, they used this one:

And this one too. I think it might be related to a samovar!

My biggest issue with the trophies is that so many are sponsor related, and therefore with some companies sponsoring multiple races, you get the same trophies at different races. That and the fact that they're absolutely ****ing ****. Plus the fact that they're so repetitive that you don't even know where half of the trophies were one. I miss the quality variety of distinctive trophies we've had in the past (and in some cases still have). The fact that some drivers have come out and said trophies nowadays are **** tells you all you need to know.

This thread has got me wondering what has happened to the old trophies for the historic Grands Prix. As in the "real" trophy that the winner either keeps until the next time or whatever arrangement the owner sees fit, like the Borg Warner for the Indy 500. We still see the proper British Grand Prix trophy, and Lewis made a big deal about it a few years ago.

I get that the race sponsors will pay for the "take home" trophies for the drivers and constructors, but the original trophies must exist somewhere for the other races.

Which bring up questions.

Which races award Trophies which are not winners to keep, but same presented each year? Read your post as British GP have one which is presented each year. Also recall that Ron Dennis were very Trophy focused to the point the drivers contract held words to effect that trophies were the property of the team and not the driver - What is the policy for the different teams now?

In trying to find footage of Lewis frankly and publicly drawing attention to the disintegrating red plastic Santander nonsense they tried to pass across instead of the RAC trophy, I found this hilarious story of Hamilton in 2105 seemingly summoning Bernie and the F1 trophy guy to let it be known that the standard of trophies was indeed piss-poor.

?! What race was this^^?

Montreal. You can see the track in the trophy.

Lol taking complaining to a whole new level....  The ones I dislike the most are the plate ones, you can´t even hold it or store that thing properly, A trophy should at least, have a solid base.

I liked the Austrian trophies as well. I have seen similar art for your living room, available on the net. Obviously at greatly reduced value, due to materials used.

So something that crossed my mind when reading this thread was for a guy like Lewis who has over 100 trophies from F1, whilst having a cardboard cutout of the circuit or a plastic Santander logo isn’t great, what about a guy like Sergio Perez who has fewer?

I was wondering would it be possible that any driver could have a collection of crap trophies and no good ones. Fortunately for Checo I was able to find images of him with decent looking trophies on the podium. Anyone with a collection of rubbish ones?

For instance Lando just got his first podium, if it’s his only one it’s a pretty poor effort.

Niki used his trophies as door stops. And when he had too many, he gave them to the attendant on the local gas station.

As some kind of crude barter system instead of paying for the fuel or just as a little extra when he was paying for filling up his car?

e. Either way, Niki Lauda was amazing.

Allegedly.

Think he was the originator of the story, which still seem unlikely though, maybe he once used one trophy as a doorstop, and maybe his local gas attendant got a trophy once. If they were out floating, I would expect them to be available for sale somewhere. Since they are not, then no.

And Ron hung on to the ones he won for McLaren.

AFAIR the story is in 'To Hell and back', which was written before his McLaren sojourn. And if Niki had no use for trophies, I'm sure he would have Ron keeping all of them.

I am kind of with Niki on that one.  I collected quite a few trophies over several decades of rallying.  Ony clubbie level of course, so you couldn't expect much  - and you were rarely disappointed in that!  Many were wood with a little plaque on it with your name.  There were some miniature silver cup type things, but once you've got a couple of those, you don't really need anymore.

The worst were the Kleber Concorde Trophies, that Kleber tyres dished out to motor clubs like confetti in the 1970s.  A plastic base with a small badly chromed plastic Concorde aircraft on it, to celebrate Kleber supplying tyres for the Concorde supersonic airliner; they were just cheap, nasty and truly dire and people actively tried to avoid winning them.

A few years back I threw out all my trophies bar about half a dozen nice ones.  I left the rest in a cardboard box at the tip.  As I left, there were people picking over them in the mistaken impression that they were worth something.  It is the memory of the event that matters, not some rotten little token.

I get it that a major event like a GP or Indy or Le Mans wants to have a memorable trophy to present, and that the winners will want a nice keepsake.  But how many massive silver cups does anyone want or need?  Let alone some of the other monstrosities pictured in this thread?  A nice cheque would be far more welcome!

Each driver attaches different value to trophies. I remember Ron Dennis would insist on a driver's contract stipulating that the original race trophies stay with McLaren for their trophy room. Drivers could have copies made for their own homes if they wanted. Some drivers didn't care, I believe it was a sticking point for Niki.

I do prefer "classy" trophies. Metal, or metal on a wooden base. Glass is fine too if it's something like a cut glass bowl. All wood can be classy too. No plastic! No ABS! The Australian ones based on Jack's steering wheel are a good example. As is any large cup or chalice. Something representing the track, country or area the race is held in can be a good design too. I don't mind a sponsor's identity being included but race trophies purely designed around a sponsor's logo/name are usually tacky. A race winner's trophy should be sturdy and well put together, the trophy should not fall off the base! It should be somewhat hefty. The constructor's trophy should be similar, with the 2nd and 3rd place driver's trophies similar quality but can be smaller.

I vote for bringing garlands/wreaths back too.

I'm bad at throwing things out, so I probably would have all of them collecting dust for decades somewhere in a corner...

Luckily for my wife, I was never good at winning any trophies ;).

A 1979 documentary included a trip to the filling station where the trophies were on display. Looked way too elaborate to just be a set up for the documentary, as well as a pretty pointless thing to fake.

Agreed, I've only kept a few of the nicer ones.
One of the nicest ones was an annually awarded silver rose bowl, the "Lotus Bowl". I won it for five successive years and it took pride of place on a coffee table in the conservatory. My wife was seriously pissed off when I sold the Lotus.

Which is ofcourse terrible. Id love to see a good laurel wreath on a winning driver. Like at the Indy 500. Which is perhaps the most sponsor "infested" race there is and where it seems to be of no issue to hang a wreath around the winners shoulder. F1 could learn from that.

I consider myself proven wrong in regard Lauda's Trophies... From the Reuters story

“The guy died unfortunately and his son was running the petrol station but they were so demolished and terribly kept there, that a friend of mine took them away, polished them and then my kids took them and put them on eBay."

At least I were correct in them being sold - Ugly or not, would they not have a fairly interesting value now? If provenance can be proven?

Yeah but in the US the drivers then have to mention all their sponsors by name during the post race interview which I find far more intrusive than the logos on their overalls.

Now I know Marco Andretti will never win, he is always occupied in his mind remembering all the sponsors he has to thank so his focus is never on the race itself. Should he win, it will be the only thank you speech in history that will have its own commercial break on TV.

Why not prepare wreaths for each driver with the teams sponsors on it? Would make them stand out even more than just on their overalls.

At the risk of being on the receiving end of some kind of ‘Aha, trap sprung, Xena Warrior Princess fan’, yes, she had a special friend called Gabrielle. But that doesn’t really look like her either. Weird.

Xena was on the other side.

This sounds so over the top in effort, F1 must be considering this.
