We're 2 hours away from the Eifel GP start!

Yesterday Bottas took pole in front of Hamilton and Verstappen. But it was close! Are we going to see a 3-way battle for the win today?

What can Leclerc do from 4th? Can super-sub Hulkenberg fight his way into the points from the last spot on the grid?

For whoever wants to have a recap of what happened in qualifying:

Starting grid

Weather

For whoever still thought we were gonna have a rain race today... sorry to burst your bubble but it will be bone dry!

Pretty identical to yesterday. Cold, mostly cloudy, and a gentle breeze.

Race strategies according to Pirelli

Pirelli expects the 2 stopper to be quickest today. But who knows? They've been wrong before.

Vettel and the Alfa Tauri's are in a great position to attempt a one stop starting on mediums.

Race start time

Race start is at 14:10 CEST, i.e. 50 minutes earlier than qualifying yesterday.

YouTube

Almost forgot, for the first time ever, Formula 1 will stream a race live on YouTube. Fans in Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, will be able to watch the race, live and for free on YouTube here. From what I know you should have the option for no commentary, or commentary in your national language, although I've read many people mentioning that for them that didn't really work correctly...  :cat:

Have a great race everyone!

Why it’s called Eifel Grand Prix?

Because the Hockenheim promoters own the rights to the German Grand Prix. (For the 100th time)

Its in the Eifel region and they can't use German Gp as rights are held by Hockenheim

Really looking forward to this race! Cold conditions and lack of long run data should make it a thriller.

Red Bull need Albon to clear Charles asap so they've got strategic options when it comes to pit stops. That said, if Lewis leads after turn one I think the race will be fairly boring. If Bottas hangs on then it should be fairly exciting.

Also to make me hum the catchy melody bit to Alec Eiffel by the Pixies all week.

Sunset is listed as 18.48, probably that.

edit: This is actually latest Central European Time Zone race since Jerez 1997.

I do miss F2, but at least now I've had a great big lie-in.

Start crucial, can't help but think the disadvantage from the dirty side might be more pronounced today.

I think Mercedes will end up rueing their decision to overrule Hamilton's wish of starting on Mediums.

Again look what happens when circumstances dictate only two usable compounds, a likely 2 stop race ... scrap the three compound rule!

Pretty sure those softs will grain right from lap 1. Those starting on alternative strategy might get an advantage.

Good point about the dirty side of the grid. Especially with no F2 and rain on Friday, the only grip that's been laid down is on the racing line.

Fully expecting at least one incident in turn one. Downhill braking, especially on the inside line, combined with low grip and heavy fuel tanks for the first time this weekend. Bring it on.

It's crazy how few wet races we have now. So many weekends are affected by rain, but never in the race.

In 2000 I think 5 of the 17 races were affected by rain. I think now we've only had five wet races since the end of 2016??

To annoy the BTCC fans who’ll miss race two.

In 2008, we had wet races in Monaco, Germany, Silverstone, Spa, Monza and Brazil.

That was back in the day of safety cars causing carnage a race due to refueling / the pit lane closing. Even a circuit like Spa in 90's almost always yielded a wet race and now it's usually dry and quite warm there!

Ah yes 2008 as well.

And indeed with Spa - I was badly sunburned there in 2015 haha.

And if it does rain, it's more often than not an unraceable deluge. Whatever happened to the consistent light shower?

We don't need rain for an exciting race.

The teams have no long run tyre data. The leaders are all starting on an unfavorable compound and graining and deg should be expected. Mercedes arguably have its slower race driver on pole and the dirty side of the grid could be a real factor off the line.

The midfield battle will be as tight as ever and I wouldn't bet against a safety car.

Lewis has a dodgy steering wheel that Mercedes weren't allowed to change it.

Hamilton back in the garage - possible issue?

Could just be F1 TV pundit drama.

I wonder if they'll talk about his son just having won his second USF2000 race yesterday?

"A lot of movement in my steering wheel, did you manage to fix my steering wheel last night?"

"Negative, Lewis, we didn't get permission for that."

Deary me, you can destroy your car in quali and replace every tiny part without penalty, but not this? :stoned:

Lewis to win and Bottas to choke either the start or the usual pace drop off the end of a stint. Leclerc podium!

Lucky I double checked the race time last night, else I may have missed the start.

I’m hoping no tyre knowledge might make a good race. I’m clinging on to anything here.

I never understand this sort of thing, is it a case of engineers not communicating or the driver not having listened? Because it seems inconceivable they wouldn’t think about telling the driver!

As Martin on Sky pointed out, it'd be a comfort issue rather than safety issue otherwise it would have been allowed to get fixed.

Absolutely shocking that he wasn't made aware of this. There seems to be a communication problem at Mercedes which needs resolving PDQ.

I wonder if Merc will be open to Ham doing the opposite of Bot, now their positions are reversed - tyres being an unknown and running soft soft is probably a weaker strat though.

Here's hoping for a close, 2011 type top 3 battle!

The cloud cover looks thicker. Even if it doesn't bring rain, it will keep track temps down.
