I've heard of fire sales, but was it necessary to set the team's wind tunnel on actual fire (thankfully doesn't seem to be too serious)?

Well, technically, it's Merc's windtunnel? (For now).  They are building their own in the future.

Don't they have their own tunnel? There was one there in the Force India days, not sure if that was the original Jordan one that Midland acquired.

It was the upgraded original, only 50% scale though.

That's what I thought. They are building a new one at their new factory.

I must say it's so satisfying to see Aston Martin struggle so much, cheating last season did not pay off for them, so good to see

Vettel's race ruined by Tsunoda and Raikkonen. Incredible how much that happened this year to him.

Nothing to do with his allegedly poor race-craft?

Nothing to do with his allegedly poor race-craft?

Besides Bahrein and SIlverstone, all the incidents were not his fault.

Raikkonen crashed him in Austria and Jeddah

Stroll put him out of the track in Zandvoort, Monza and Sochi.

Ocon put him out of track in Monza.

Tsunoda crashed into him in Jeddah.

Nothing at all, he has in fact driven very very well this year in races and avoided many incidents. And got almost the most overtakes of anyone.

He was entirely the innocent victim in these incidents, there is nothing a driver can do if someone just drives into him.

Ah I forgot about Mick crashing into him in Monza too.

Eight incidents without being in fault.

Even I can argue that the Silverstone spin is because he wanted to avoid collinding with Alonso.

What a sad, sad ending to this terribly lackluster season from AM. I haven't really been following the team, is there any reason to believe...they were gearing up for 2022?

They performed better when they didn't copy other cars. F1 can be so funny sometimes.

Well Seb got most overtakes of the year award, great for someone who according to british media cannot overtake  :stoned: . I really hope Seb will get one really good car before he retires.

Seb was about the only bright spot, in a season many would prefer to forget. Like baseball however, hope spring eternal every spring. I'm looking forward to a better effort from all involved in the team, and hopefully a more successful season.

“What’s happened this year confirmed our pre-season worries that the unilateral aerodynamic changes that were made late in the season had a massive effect on us and Mercedes,” he explained.

“Because the midfield was so tight, the lap time that we lost - seven, eight, nine-tenths of a second per lap, depending on what track we were at - moved us from the third-fastest car to about the sixth, seventh-fastest car.

“With Mercedes, they too lost because of the aerodynamic philosophy they run, but that just moved them from always being on pole to now fighting for the championship.

“For us, I think it had a much, much bigger impact, and because of it, and because of the ’22 regulations being completely different, we had to switch early on to focus all of our attention on ’22 and leave ’21 at that time.”

“We did have a big development programme early on in ’21 to try and claw back some of the aero deficit that was put upon us,” he said.

“We tried that early on, but we had to stick to our plan to switch over, because otherwise, you have a mediocre year this year, and then not have the optimal year that we should be having next year. So we made a conscious effort to switch over, as painful as it was.”

What updates Aston Martin did bring to help improve its downforce proved costly in another area – because they made the car too draggy, which hurt it at some venues.

Szafnauer added: “In trying to get some of that downforce back, we also ended up with a car that was a bit draggier than we used to have in the past.

“At some circuits, a bit of extra drag doesn’t manifest itself into a big lap time deficit. But at other circuits it does. So that’s why we’ve been a little bit up and down this season.”

It wasn't cheating. It was a grey area. Im not a fan of the team but i respect the tenacity of what they did.

Otmar has left the Aston Martin F1 team:

Wasn't he rumoured to be going to Alpine?

Yeah, a rumour he categorically denied. Which means it's true.

They must be parting on good terms, couple of months since the story about Alpine ran, and he by looks of it continued in his usual capacity up until now.

BWT are rumoured to have left Aston Martin for 2022. Thank god. I hate these sponsors that impact the driver helmet designs and colours. Plus it looked terrible on the cars.

Really?!?! What happened? I stopped following his story, when Stroll rescued  (I use the term loosely) the team. I really thought Vijay had no way of escaping prison.

His lawyers have been fighting extradition.  Lawyers can string anything out, given enough payment.  He has been declared bankrupt though and currently there is an attempt to evict him from his house as his company, that owns it, has defaulted on the mortgage.  The lawyers are very happy....

I have searched for an Aston Martin Team Thread for 2922 to no avail. I know there has not been much to talk about, Vettel's covid recovery being the only good news, but both drivers did score points at Imola. Congrats to them!

I think you have a good few years before you can expect that thread to appear.

Must have been tired. I meant is there a 2022 team thread for Aston Martin? I couldn't find one, even with the search function. Can I start a TEAM thread, or are there special rules for that requiring MOD approval , or some such thing?

Seb had an exciting race today; was struggling to piece the story of his race together from live timing (because Liberty’s race/ entertainment directors don’t like to show the action on screen, instead leaving it to your imagination). At one point early on, he passed Stroll but fell back again, no idea what happened there.

Points would have been really good. Just a shame about that clash with Mick.

The car is absolute rubbish.

Stroll did his Stroll thing, on a poor track he managed to make get points on a day which started as very unlikely when the team overcooled the fuel.

We've current got 2 Aston Martin team threads on the front page. This is the 2021, while the 2022 is slightly below. Could the mods please lock this thread, so all the discussion of this season end up in the 2022 thread, rather than splintered between the two?
