The championship was open to British & Commonwealth drivers scoring in all F2 races (except Innsbruck which seems to have been overlooked by the points compiler) and a points table was published in Autocar 28 October 1960.

But this table has several scores that are, to put it politely, difficult to understand.

Motor Sport's online database gives some different scores which resolve most of my doubts but not all. Some may well rest of if fastest laps scored.

My understanding is not helped by not having a full understanding of the scoring system. There were three  tiers of scoring which seemed to depend on race distance.

It would be a big help is someone who has Autocar for 1960 could have a look at the pre-season issues and either post or email the rules.

Secondly, did Autocar publish corrections after 28 Oct issue? It would be very useful to know what these were.

Here’s a discussion from a very long time ago about the various 1960 F2 championships:

Another championship I have never heard of so far

Right or wrong, this is the list I have for the 1960 The Autocar F2 Championship.

Autocar F2 Championship table – lists event dates and Brabham 1st with 18 points. 19/3/60 Syracuse GP; 2/4/60 BARC Oulton Park; 10/4/60 Brussels GP – Brabham 9 points; 18/4/60 Pau GP – Brabham 9 points; 18/4/60 BARC Goodwood Lavant Cup; 24/4/60 BRSCC Snetterton; 30/4/60 Aintree 200; 7/5/60 Lan & Ches MC Oulton Park; 15/5/60 Prix du Paris, Montlhery; 6/6/60 BARC Crystal Palace, 5/6/60 Frontieres GP Chimay - plucked from 1/7/60 The Autocar p38

There's a reference to 23/12/60 issue running its 1960 Competition Review. All I've got transcribed is that it lists...

1960 Competition results – WDC, Prinicipal races, F2, Sports Car Manufacturers Championship, British Hillclimb Championship, European Hillclimb Championship, BT & RDA Gold Star Rallies, BT & RDA Gold Star Trials Championship, Trials Championships, Major Rallies p1082 -85

If these help, then I'll try to dig them out.

There is a paragraph in Autosport 5th May 1961:

"Winner of the Autocar F2 Championship for 1960, Jack Lewis received his trophy, a silver Salver and a cheque for 200 guineas recently,  runner up was Jack Brabham (medal and 50 guineas) and third was Mike McKee (medal and 20 guineas)."

The Motor Racing Register 1964 says the championship was open to British drivers on the results all national, national open an international F2events of not less than 24 miles held in Britain during 1964. Points were:

up to 50 miles 1st 3, 2nd 2 3rd 1

51 to 100 miles 1st 6, 2nd 4, 3rd 2, 4th 1

101 to 200 miles: 1st 9, 2nd 7, 3rd 5, 4th 3, 5th 2 finishers 1

over 200 miles: 1st 15, 2nd 12, 3rd 9, 4th 6, 5th 4, finisher 1

it lists the previous winners: 1957 A E Marsh, 1958 J Brabham, 1959 S Moss, 1960 J Lewis.

the 1965 edition says that points for that year would be awarded on a 9, 6, 4, 3 and 1 basis

it gives the 1964 results as

1 M Spence 18 points

2 T Maggs 14

3 R Atwood 9

4 D Hulme 7

5 ARees 3

others scored points but competed in insufficient events to qualify.

I’m sure RAP knows but the Black Book, volume 7 contains a table for the 1964 championship using the same points system as the 1964 Register and giving the same results as the 1965 Register.

Thanks to everyone who has posted. Roger's comment is why I'm trying to solve this. We are doing a new edition of the "Black Book" and as the 1964 points are included, I want to include 1960 (There was, of course, no F2 from 61 to 63).

The trouble is that this 1964 points system does not give the totals published. For example, Brabham is quoted as 30 points. Using the 64 points, his F2 season was (all 101-200 miles unless stated)

Siracusa dnf  - Bruxelle 1st = 9 - Pau 1st = 9 Aintree dnf Solitude dnf Nurburgring 3rd = 5 Roskilde (65m) 1st = 6 Zeltweg  dnf

TOTAL 29.

Autocar's table scores him with 7 points for Roskilde and 30 in total and checking other scores it seems likely that there was a point for fastest lap in both 100-200 and 50-100 races, but not up to 50m.

But it would be nice to know with certainty.

Normally one can work it out from final scores but as my two sources - see original post - don't completely agree it all seems a bit flaky.

Hence my questions.
