As some TNFers are aware, after the positive response to the "Niki Lauda: His Competition History", for some time now I have been working on a similar book detailing the racing career of Jacky Ickx. This will be the first time the great Belgian's career has been examined in a fully English language publication and the intention is to be as comprehensive as was the Lauda tome.

I have been fortunate to have already received a great deal of support in the undertaking, which is progressing well, but inevitably with the approach of "a photo from every race"  to back up the reports, there are a few images that are proving elusive and several more where I would like to have something better than those I have already identified. To this end, can anyone help with photos of Jacky at the following specific events? We will of course provide full accreditation and settle any necessary licensing fees.

If it's easier to discuss off line, please send me a PM and I will let you have my personal email address, which may also be the best medium for sharing images.

If I may make a plea not to send any photos from races not included on the list; as you can imagine, in a career as long as Jacky's there are an awful lot of events he contested and I have trawled through thousands of images across dozens of archives to find these. A handful of the races listed below are ones where I have no photo; the rest fall into the "would like better" category, hence me seeking help from this forum.

I really hope people can help Jon with this. He's put so much work to this already and it says a lot about his efforts that the above is all he's looking for in what is, quite frankly, a mammoth undertaking.

It's also a great snapshot of the eclecticism of Ickx' career, especially in later times when drivers were being funnelled into one single genre.  Just on those extracts, in three years, Ickx competed on sand and an oval, and in a formula whose criterion is pre-dating 1905...all shoehorned in around winning a world title and Le Mans.  Repeatedly.

This is why I look forward to this book even more than the Lauda one.

Most probably you'll have already consulted Ickx's tribute website. Some of the pictures you are looking for can be found there duly accredited: for instance, the 6h of Vallelunga '78. There's also the associated Facebook group; I imagine that its members will be able to provide the contact of the authors whose pictures are published in the website.

Thanks Narcis - yes; I am indeed in touch with the administrators and members of those sites, who have played an important part in supporting the research that's been gathered so far. Of the list above, there's probably only half a dozen events where I have no image at all; it's mainly a question of me trying to find something better than I have already identified!

Thanks Collumbin - it's been a great deal of fun so far! That list above barely scratches the surface of what Jacky got involved in, and so much has been previously undocumented....

I'm looking forward to the final results when my friends at Evro have worked their magic on it! Still a little way to go yet, though.

Bravo Jon! That's a very wide gap in the literature that you'll be filling, finally, so thank you. As the great man said when presenting his (latest) photo autobiography: he prefers to remember the good times and prefers photos to text. That's alright, but the result is that whatever has been published about him does not really make justice to his amazing career.

Not only that - as a succession of interviews over the last couple of decades have demonstrated, Jacky also doesn't like to talk about his achievements and prefers to focus on the people who helped him to his successes; the designers, mechanics, team owners etc. who gave him the opportunities. Whilst this is an admirable trait, and one I applaud, it means that if one asked him to write his autobiography, one wouldn't get very far!

The aim with this new book, as was the case with the Lauda one, is simple in concept but huge in scope; to report on each individual race that Jacky contested and illustrate it with a suitable photograph, with a narrative that is as factual and as free of opinion as possible. And so far, I am delighted to say, we are making excellent progress. I now know what I don't know, if that makes sense, and as the initial post shows, there's a relatively small number of photos that I still need to track down. Rather excited about how it's coming together, actually!

Are only the four-wheeled events being covered or will his early motorcycle trial outings also be included?

I see a picture in Jonathan Thomson book "Ferrari Formula 1 Cars 1948-1976" that also depicts special monoposti like F2 of the:

16 Jun 1968 - Hockenheim F2 - Ferrari Dino 166 #6

Most pictures seem to be provided by Geoffrey Goddard.

Hi Alan - it’s a fair question! The answer is in the title of the book ; “Jacky Ickx: His Competition History.” So yes, Jacky’s motorcycling career is covered fully .

Thanks Arjan - I’ll take a look. If there’s something in there by Mr Goddard that fits the bill, I’ll have a word with our own DCN.
