I have always associated Rotax with Karts and microlights but on looking at  the company website of BRP , the Canadian company who own them i discovered they make a huge range of engines now, Karts, Ski mobiles, Ski Doos and planes.

The most powerful is a marine engine with 300 bhp from only 88kg.

That's from only three cylinders. I assume its a bit of a constant revs device as it powers Ski Doo's on water but still impressive.

I wonder what the emissions etc are? it is a 4 stoke but I presume less rules  at sea?

If it's running a prop, it's also almost trivial to run the exhaust through the lower leg and into the water, reducing noise emissions tremendously.

Interesting.  I first ran across Rotax way back, as an alternative to the VW flat four in homebuilt aircraft, I think it was (or perceived to be?) a snowmobile engine company then.

I wonder how many of those range extenders they sell?  Put one of those in the garage, and forget about the spare can of petrol days ...   ;)

Rotax for me will always means 2-stroke Can-Am and KTM dirt bikes. And, grudgingly, Ski Doos.

Speaking of snowmobiles an intresting article here about the development of the  Alouette snowmobile which skidded (!) Giles Villeneuve to fame.

It describes Giles as talented engineering type not just the "three wheels , who cares" image he is most remembered for.

Rotax are well known for ultralight and not so light engines. As well as snowmobile and jet ski engines as well.

Were not uncommon in speedway F500s either. And known for reliablity
