Does anyone know if the 1950s GP rider Jean-Pierre Bayle was related to Jean-Michel Bayle the Motocross and GP rider?

Also with Zonta Van Den Goorbergh joining the Moto3 grid this year, is he the first third generation rider to race in GPs?

No relation whatsoever between Jean-Pierre and Jean-Michel Bayle.

A good source for this kind of question is the Racing Memo website, not updated since the unfortunate death of its founder Vincent Glon 10 years ago, but thankfully still online. The page about "family" racing is here :

http://racingmemo.fr...-GP-FAMILLE.htm

Regarding the Van Den Goorbergh question, I am fairly sure you are right.

Thanks Philippe, I aware of that site, but I hadn't noticed that page on it. It is a great site, full of a huge amount of detail and obviously lovingly put together by someone with a real passion for racing. I have just spent an enjoyable time looking through it again.

From the site it seems that there are 3 generations of Boddice family sidecar racers, but Mick jr I think has only raced since the sidecar world championship was ejected from the main GPs (I might be wrong about this).

It is a huge shame the site has not been updated since his death, but as you say, it is great it is still online.

Jurgen and Patrick were brothers, jurgen being Zontas' father. Who was the 1st of the 3 generations then ie the father of Jurgen and Patrick?

Those DocShop days were the best

The father of Jurgen and Patrick, Piet competed in a few World Championship in the early 70's at Assen, this was in the 125cc.

Van de Goorbergh is a third-generation rider? Goodness, that's news to me.

I'm quite amazed by the number of siblings in motorcycle racing of late: three pairs on the grid in 2021 with the Marquez, Espargaro, and Rossi-Marini brothers.

In 2022 there are also the Binder brothers in MotoGP - so still three sets of brothers in MotoGP. Raul Fernandez's brother Adrian is in Moto3. In Moto2 Sam Lowes twin Alex races WSB and Deniz Oncu's twin Can races WSS.

Remy Gardner is Wayne's son and Jake Dixon in Moto2 is Darren's son, who is an ex sidecar Worldchamp and also raced 500cc solos.

If we widen the search to the World Superbike paddock, you have:

Philipp Ottl son of Peter, Eugene Laverty one of 3 racing brothers (others were Michael and John), Isaac Vinales - Mavericks cousin, Bahattlin Sofuoglu in WSS son of Kenan, multiple WSS champ, Oli Bayliss son of Troy and the Fuligni brothers.

That's just the ones I know of.

Max Vincent, son of Chris Vincent rode in GP's in the 90's.

On a much less grand scale I was one of three brothers who raced at club and the occasional national level.

I seem to also recall Max's brother Jay riding in the 1994 Supercup series

I also remember your brother Derek almost taking my calf muscle out on the grid at Lydden, circa 1975?.

Jay Vincent did the GPs - mostly 250cc and he normally did well when it rained. He also did a season in the 500s on the Pulse, which I think was the old MuZ V4.

Perhaps you should have been less tardy off the line.

Talking of Lydden, Kents answer to the Sachsenring, how about the British GP there next year.    :smoking:

Never mind all that 'bratwurst' how about a rat burger dripping in congealed fat with boiled onions. Michelin 3 star (M45 PZ4) if ever there was one.

You sold me a crash helmet once a Japanese 'HA' why did you not know if you'd stuck flogging them you could have been the 'Yuropian' Arai importer and be even richer than you are today.

Must get together soon. We are having a 'old lags' bash at my place in August, if you aren't already booked at the dentist get in touch.    Long time no speak.

If you were that slow starting your bike that Derek managed to get away before you, well, I think the fault was all yours. :D

On the face of it I would agree with you, but I'm sure I didn't think so at the time!

I wonder why Tony thinks I was flogging Arai, they were Shoei - maybe his memory is as poor as mine

Who are you again   I would have sworn (and still frequently do) that it was a HA, but as you are younger than me your memory is undoubtedly better I will bow to your knowledge here.

I do know that if you wore it backwards you couldn't see out of it, but did you offer a refund  :drunk:

Those us who can remember BBC's Grandstand and ITV's World Of Sport programmes on cold, wet Saturday afternoons will remember the Scrambling (not Motocross in those days !) with the Rickman brothers, Derek and Don, often battling for the lead.

On a personal note my brother, having beaten all and sundry in the quarries on Portland on his home built Tribsa, had the misfortune to come up against Derek Rickman on his official Scrambling debut at the beautiful Bulbarrow track. Having been lapped in a three lap heat, aspirations of glory were put on the back burner for the time being...

In SA Speedway,, Ken and Kerry I'Anson husband and wife [later] on Speedway Sidecars. Won an Aussie title.

In more recent times both have played state level roadracing in cars

Son Roger has driven FF and sports Cars well also.

The infamous Taylor Brothers. Dean initially rode solos and was nicknamed autumn leaves but with a trainer wheel and a passenger was very good on sidecars. Brother Kevin too was at times as good. Kevin also rode long track. For a decade or so they had a string of motorcycle shops, Taylor Team with Yamaha, Suzuki with John Boulger managing.

They were big time  for a decade or so then it fell to pieces.

There is several other extended families in SA speedway, like most forms of motorsports lots of relatives racing, crewing, being officials etc.

You mean, the winner of the 125cc Madrid GP three years straight, 1946 to '48? I don't know, but I guess he had to hurry some to accomplish that!

Evidence is proving notoriously difficult to come by unless I'm not looking hard enough. Turns out his real name was Francisco.
