Both 51G and 33G are severe.

There was nothing about Alonso's crash to indicate he'd be injured or need urgent medical attention. If that was in a race, it'd have been a SC.

Red flags aren't thown JUST for an injured driver.

They are also thrown when a barrier is considered compromised so that it can be repaired, preventing a (potentially) more serious accident happening at the same spot.

In a race, if the barrier is considered compromised then a red flag is thrown.

I honestly don’t think there’s much discussion to be had about this…if there is a serious enough crash to warrant a red flag then it absolutely does not matter what else is happening on the track. Safety is the number 1 priority, they don’t need more systems in place to allow racing/hot laps to continue in other parts of the circuit…it’ll only cause confusion at what is a critical time. When a red flag is thrown, there should be the ability for medical teams and marshals to get on to the track ASAP.

What they do need to look at is how trigger-happy F1 seems to be with throwing red flags lately.

Red flag in race vs Q is actually different things. In Q it is about getting the clock stopped because time is limited. Also - no driver would drive 3 laps behind a SC in Q...

Sure, but this thread is about qualifying, not the race. If Alonso crashed like that in the race it wouldn’t be a red flag. That’s the key difference.

Red flag everything in front of the scene and the start of the lap, job done.
