I wouldn’t argue it was a terrible call given the flappiness of the end plate, it was more of a borderline call.  It is easy to forget it and move on since it was a Haas, but I would hate to see a race decided based on a call like that.  It was a tough spot for the stewards and team alike.

These type of call are always borderline - RC have no way of checking what has resulted in the end-plate becoming more flappy other than bringing the car in for a check.

How would you feel if the right half of the wing and went under his wheel and he took out other cars?

All valid points, but you just hate to see it happen to a struggling team like Haas.

Some might not be happy if it came loose and dropped under his front wheel as he went on the brakes into a corner with marginal run-off.

I recall a Porsche 956 written off when the car hit a Silverstone hare into Club back in the day when Stowe to Club was a straight - front spoiler went under the tyre and the car went straight on into the barrier under braking.

I always appreciate hearing your perspective as an experienced marshal.

I'm curious what you think about race control, under similar circumstances, telling a team "you need to plan your pit stop in the next 5 laps" rather than throwing the immediate meatball flag.

Or, do you think that a similar conversation may have happened, along the lines of "we're monitoring the damage, if it gets any worse we're throwing the meatball."

Either might have happened but more likely the latter - I tried to avoid working in RC as much as possible - other half liked doing it so I often used to get an inside view from her on the long drive home.

Main problem for RC is that the damaged part was on the blind side from RC and the team - RC would probably be relying on reports from marshals post with a better view and camera images.

Would the driver that gets hit by it when it did come off and slip tru the halo also call it "just a scratch" ?

They made the correct call by meatballing him. People who are saying they overreacted are mostly also the same people that freak out if it did hit a driver and injure him

But strange that Hamilton didn’t get the meatball flag in Monaco, when he was racing with a damaged front wing. The plane of his front wing was flapping just like Magnussen’s end plate.

Not holding my breath on Ham getting the meatball for the same thing, but if he does the change of opinion a number of people display will be fun.

Its never too late to start doing the right thing.  I think Hamilton probably should have received the meatball flag for that, and I wouldn't want bad precedent to be followed just in the name of consistency.  The problem is I don't expect that Magnussen's flag will become the new normal either

Magnussen being called in for that loose end plate really did irk me. I can understand calling a driver in when the front wing is loose, but just a piece of the end plate - we have seen that all the time over the years and no one has been given the black and orange flag for it before. With this new precedent I can only assume we’ll be seeing this a whole lot more which means a lot of drivers races are going to be destroyed in the future from a light piece of contact despite having perfectly fine pace and in no danger of having their wing fall off. Can’t wait to see one of the Red Bull’s, Ferrari’s or Mercedes have an end plate hanging off the car and watch it suddenly blow up into a much bigger issue.

FIA have set a properly messy precedent. Can you imagine a race being decided by a meatball flag?  :rotfl: . I don't think hamilton would have won Saudi Arabia last year.

Meatball flag?
I’ve never heard that expression for the “technical “ flag.

You must get out more!!
