Austria 2022

weKefKDl.jpg

Yes, it's race week. Again. We move from British Motorsport's spiritual home to Red Bull's. No, not Milton Keynes but Spielberg, Austria where we can expect a lot of stuff like the header image from a few years back or even, gawdhelpus, this:

MsZveFjl.jpg

What larks, Pip! Plainly the dressing up stuff doesn't curse Red Bull like it did Mercedes that time. Anyway, for those like, two of you out there who don't already know all this, Red Bull own the circuit, hence this fellow that disappointingly you cant climb or even get that close to:

4HxxwZDl.jpg

It's the old Österreichring, of course - a very fast (too fast, probably) circuit last seen being used for F1 in basically its original configuration back in 1987. Since then, it fell on hard times but has been given a ton of liposuction to make it smaller and brought back up to F1 spec by Red Bull. To be honest, I preferred it how it was but if not for Red Bull, I think it's likely we wouldn't be seeing F1 race here at all. But we are, and here's how everyone lines up going in:

And the driver kebab:

When is it on?

I know some of you are going to say you are pleased about this but for the rest of us I bring horrifying news - it is a Sprint weekend  :(  The timetable is therefore this in local time:

k6rP9uZl.png

An hour earlier for British viewers.

what are the tyres?

What is the weather going to be

I do not know yet! Feel free to post forecasts

Oh, and there's this.

Fernando the Marathon Man
@alo_oficial
has now driven 92,643km, the longest distance in F1! #F1

Feel free to imagine 54.2 million Alonsos and also feel free to share stuff you remember about visiting the Austrian GP or watching it on tv.

I dislike the actual circuit (too short) but it is an absolutely lovely spot!  It would be fun to attend that race some day.  I suspect Max will dominate the weekend unless his car breaks.

Norris and Bottas are really wrecking the 'animals went in two by two, hurrah' vibe, yeah.

Wooh! Sprint!

Looking forward to the inevitable Max/Charles clash ...

(tbh I'm away for the weekend, so not ideal as I'm going to have a 4hr "qualifying/sprint/race" F1-fest on Sunday afternoon ... at least it will keep me off my phone for 2 days avoiding the result, which can only be a good thing)

Pretty excited that it's a sprint weekend tbh. Going there on friday, so 3 days of on track action, definitely something to look forward too!

Weather forecast is always a bit inaccurate so many days in advance. We just got a heat wave behind us and the coming week it's getting cooler with definitely a possibility for some rain over the weekend.

Just waiting to see what Ferrari does to Leclerc this week.

Spain - DNF from the lead

Monaco - Strategy disaster from lead

Baku - DNF from the lead (probably finished 2nd)

Canada - 20 place grid penalty duo to 2 DNFs

Silverston - Strategy disaster from lead

Austria - pending

If the Ferrari fans get their wish, Sainz will spin out at the first corner or have a mechanical failure. Screw our boy!!1!

No, Ferrari fans want a fight for WDC, correctly executed pit stops/strategy and owning up to **** ups they do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Just as easy as the pole in Silverstone would be and just as easy as the race in Silverstone would be?

We'll see.

After attending Montreal and Silverstone, it's three in a row for me, and I'm camping to boot.

I am excited, but at the same time I've barely recovered. I wish Austria was next week, but alas. I've no idea how the mechanics and media do it!

I think Ferrari will be strong again. Slow corners and acceleration are their strength.

Interested to see how Alpine do, especially in qualifying. We could have another Alonso front row.

Interested to see what effect the altitude has.

One day I hope to see the little but loud dog (Alonso), barking away while leashed to a lamp post, finally have the chance to be set free to chase after all the rabbits. May this weekend be a good one.

Expecting Max domination here in normal circumstances, this is probably his best circuit and I’m sure he’ll be keen to make up for Silverstone. Hopefully Mercedes’ are still close here.

Norris as a dark horse? He always goes well around RBR.

I'll never understand why people bother talking about the weather on a Monday before a race, when a long range forecast is very rarely accurate. Might as well be posting what the weather's like on Mars, for as useful as that is!

Hang on now..... I will cling to any flimsy hope of something which can have Haas battle a little higher than a dry race will allow them - And in general, wettish gives all of us much, much, much better racing.

No rain on Mars next 10 days.

Thanks for the Intro, Sophie. I still haven't recovered from the Brit GP, but I will predict a Max victory, rain or shine. I'll also predict that Latifi will not make Q3, but I commend him for his efforts at Silverstone.

Indeed. It was only Thursday when you could say it might rain in Silverstone on Saturday. And even then the range of rain probability at 3 pm was 20% to 70% depending on the website.

At the moment it looks like a dry weekend, but let's see again in a few days.

And Hype was on the Williams as well.

It still exists! According to the wiki run by Gachot and sponsoring Force India. Updated a day ago, but the demise of FI probably not noticed.

And of all the sponsors form the 90's midfield teams one would bet on being in F1 in the 2010's. HYPE would've given a huge return on the bet.

I don't really like sprint weekends. Butr still. looking forward to this. I'll miss the sprint anyway - after last weekend at Silverstone I'm off to an even more glamorous sporting event - a pre-seasonf riendly between Bradford City and Derby County!

Ferrari will find a way to screw Shaarl. Probably a straightforward win for one of the Bulls.

Unless there's rain, i suspect a boring race

F1 lost a LOT of money when they lost tobacco sponsorship. The energy drink money is pretty silly amounts of profit that is nicely filling the void from when the tobacco sponsors left. Oh In motorsports in general energy drinks are the new tobacco branding essentially, bringing a lot of exposure and money to the sport.

Great opening post Sophie! Silly me. Who still has his head at Silverstone. Never realizing. It's a double header! On a track. In Austria. My favorite holiday destination. In both winter and summer. And a track where I once "raced" at.

I'm looking forward! A track where passing can be done as well and races havent been dull there these past years.

Gruss Gott!

German is such a beautiful language.

The all caps are obviously quite fitting (that was just a copy paste!).

That's how we pronounce it here.
