Forgot to mention it yesterday, Nojiri will miss this weekend because of a collapsed lung. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Lawson claimed his second win of the season with remarkable tyre management today and now leads the points table. He certainly does what he can to keep Marko's and Honda's attention.

I couldn't find any SuperGT related thread, so eurobeat intesifies...
And crashes too.
Not seen any reports of any major injuries. That's amazing. https://twitter.com/...250218944655361

Good qualifying from Lawson finally - and it led to a comfortable win. If he can start on the front row for the remaining races the championship should be his.

Shows how much I know. I always assumed not only that they’d supported the Grand Prix in the past, but that they were generally a support series for SuperGT. The latter is what I’d always assumed was the top series in Japan.
I’ve always said I think each GP should be supported by the highest profile local series possible, so this would fit in nicely.

NASCAR supporting F1 at Cota, IndyCar at Miami and... uh, Stadium Super Trucks at Vegas?
DTM as a support race?
BTCC?
Stock Car Brasil? (Rubinho, Kanaan, Zonta and Piquet jr!!)
What would be dragged up at Azerbaijan? Or the Middle-East, or even Red Bull Ring?
I am all for the idea though! It would be awesome!

Wasn't BTCC a support race for British GP in the 80's or 90's ?

Two cars were launched on Lawson's car, one into a beautiful corkscrew.

Sorry Liam, that was an extremely optimistic move in the first place, and from the footage Nojiri in fact still leave you enough space, you just ran wide.

He certainly wasn't given one car width of room, which is why he ended up on the unforgiving kerb which caused the bouncing and the spin. Onboard: https://youtu.be/Dw2D8qeGlH0?t=277

Possibly the most "balletic" shunt I've seen, and the series has previous form as well!

He's lost a lot of points to his championship rival as a result of the crash, so if his career hinges on winning the title this year it won't have helped.
Dr Marko was probably impressed by Lawson leaving his foot in as he was going round the outside though, so there's that.
Posted 21 August 2023 - 10:04
I didn't understand how Makino could get launched into a corkscrew like that. But I now realise the contact with Lawson was a secondary impact: Makino had already run into the back of Sekiguchi (who had slowed for Lawson; it's very clear from Makino's onboard), and that first impact lifted the front of Makino's car (and made him lose his front wing and right front wheel). So it looks like it was the underside of Makino's nose, or even the floor on the car, that made contact Lawson's left rear wheel. Which makes the spectacular corkscrew less of a mystery.
Posted 21 August 2023 - 10:40
He can still do it - should be a great decider weekend. If Marko doesn't give him a chance then it's something other than talent.
Posted 21 August 2023 - 13:02
I certainly hope so, just saying this hasn't helped and looks like a pretty massive own goal by Lawson.

Or Mr Marko will hold Lawson accountable for that in not winning his title. Should he miss out on it.

He's already twice missed out on a AT seat, so I presume they very much like Lawson for his youth and marketability but perhaps they're not 100 percent sold quite yet.

Having three victories in a SF season is special on its own, especially in a rookie season. I think that's the most anyone achieved in recent years, you have to go back to Lotterer and the Formula Nippon days to find a truly dominant performance. But he definitely made his finale significantly more stressful than it needed to be, now Nojiri is back in contention and both of them have to outscore Miyata to win, it will probably be an intense weekend.

It seems behind the scenes he's well thought of at Red Bull (and by Marko) but hasn't put together the results on track (i.e. championships). There is certainly the impression that he's just a placeholder option and that Redbull are still very open to someone who might be more of a stand out / brighter prospect for the future, and Lawson will ultimately miss out in the shuffle. I said last year that he needed to win SF, the reason being to move into that stand out category himself. As it stands he's very reliant on other people's performances not paning out.
Still, it wasn't a lack of pace that undid him here. Still all to play for in the last round, pity it's, what, 2 months away? Other decisions might have been made by then...

I agree, and I'd very much like to see him in F1, but this was a really costly error in terms of the championship, and a little embarrassing too.
The series final double header is 9 weeks away, that's a long time, and presuming Perez isn't going anywhere, Ricciardo will likely lock down that AT seat.

would like to see him at Super Formula. And 1-2 additional international drivers.
In other news: Kamui Kobayashi could retire from Super Formula what would be a shame...
There is also a big chance we won't see Ryo Hirakawa again because of his reserve role at McLaren.
