I remember when Tony Stewart shat himself while leading a race, the announcers picked it up off his team radio, and started talking about it like it was a failing car component.  Banter like “Will he be able to nurse it home with his Jockeys full?”

I remember another time Dale Jr won a race, and he left victory lane while they were trying to interview him and sprinted to a portapotty.  They kept a camera on the portapotty as the press gathered outside to wait for him.

Tried pee'ing in a kart seat once. Drilled holes in it especially.

It was really hot, I drank a load of water before my 2hr stint (24hr race) Needed to go within the first few laps and...........I just couldn't. The straights weren't long enough to relax enough to get a flow going. Fast forward to the tail end of my stint and I was in agony, I couldn't touch the kerbs as the vibrations made the pain so much worse. It felt like i would never run out of fuel, I was signaling to my team that I wanted to stop early but they kept telling me stay out. When I did get to my pitstop, i had to roll out of the kart and had to crawl on my hands and knees to the loo. All the muscles in my groin and abdomen were in spasm. Longest, most painfull wee of my life.

I've also drilled holes in every single racing-kart seat I've ever had, but that's solely so I don't end up sitting in a water puddle when it rains.

It must be an awful slow news day in F1 land for folks to be discussing this Topic.

Not something I have ever stopped to consider, but when mother nature calls, mother nature calls.

Has Hamilton maybe heard the oft-told story about Piquet peeing in his cars and misremembered it as Schumacher?

I bet Nico Rosberg & Lewis Hamilton would have peed in each others car before the race if they had opportunity to do it unseen lol. Pipi Gate...or wasn't that a politician in the USA? LOL.

Dan Wheldon's 'Hilarious' Story About Robby Gordon Peeing in Dario Franchitti's Car

Let James Hinchcliffe tell you a story about peeing in a race car

Indycar drivers and stories about peeing in their seats. Name a more iconic duo.

Incidentally, in the world of pro cycling, virtually every cyclist pees in race whilst riding. The riders are constantly flashing themselves at the cameras and roadside spectators.

I needed to go at the seaside once so I went in the sea. Surprisingly hard to persuade my body to do it.

Meh, it's not news Schumacher should be ashamed of, but it's up to the driver to reveal stuff like that. The fact Schumi couldn't defend himself makes it worse. No big deal though, tons of drivers do the same.

Maybe it's just me then. I find it highly offensive to make such remarks about a guy that cannot defend himself. I'm sure his kids and wife were really pleased to read that

I think you are being overly sensitive.  Because by extrapolation you are saying that we can't say anything even remotely negative about deceased drivers either, as likewise they cannot defend themselves.

Maybe. I wonder if Lewis was in Schumachers position and it was Max Verstappen being interviewed however?

I would be (truly) interested to know if the weather plays a role in wether a driver has to pee during a race or not. In normal weather (does not have to be extremely hot), I think they'd sooner by dehydrated than 'having to go'.

However. I've play countless of tennismatches of more than two hours where I did not have to relieve myself... but I've also a couple of matches in dreary weather, say a slight drizzle... and then I had to go to the loo between every set. I can also remember Jos Verstappen spinning out of a F1-race in a promising position (in the points), because his need to pee overcame his concentration. And that was in a very wet-race.

So... in cold, wet conditions... more need of a sanitary pitstop?

I don't really see what that has to do with it?

It's not the peeing that dehydrates you in hot weather, but rather the sweating.  Sweat more, and there is less to pee.

It's un-becoming of any driver to talk like that about another driver who cannot respond. Essentially it's tacky to begin with to be discussing the topic in any way on a major afternoon TV show.

The un-fans can walk away saying that F1 drivers piss themselves - with no context towards why or any other series - where it happens as well.

I wonder what the response would be if Nadal said Federer used to piss himself.

There was a driver interview in NASCAR back in the 90s or 2000s where the driver had crashed out very early and had a visible wet spot. They just laughed and said something to the effect that normally it gets hidden by by all the sweat during the race. Can't remember who it was.

Yup, first thing you do with a new seat.

FFS, I'm eating my dinner. For what it's worth, I 've done many 2 hour stints karting and never, ever, felt the need.

Obviously your gut would have to be very unwell for that to happen.

Tennis players have bathroom breaks so why would they need to do that.  Racing is a particular discipline that doesn't allow for breaks, unless they get a red flag and you do see them going off to the bathroom when that happens. The stress and anxiety around a F1 race along with the liquids they are advised to drink before and during is bound to add to the urge to urinate.  Should a driver stop if they feel the urge?

From all the anecdotes I have heard over the years and on this thread, it doesn't sound like something a driver would shy away from or deny.  Sounds like LH would do it if he could.

This is common enough in single seaters, and takes on another dimension in endurance racing where the seats are shared. Apparently it's not too awful if one co-driver relieves himself, but if you have two co-drivers who do before your stint...

But... they also change the seats in endurance racing. In particular in prototypes.

Kinda. It's an oversized based seat, or fitted for the largest driver then the smaller guys have seat inserts to fill the gaps. If your insert has no bottom, you're gonna be having another persons pee-wee soaking into your nomex.

Can we also get a poll?

I vote i don't (usually) pee in suits.

Should that be a pool?

Slightly off topic, but I recall a F1 driver on the dummy grid at Silverstone getting out of his car, walking over to the barriers and having a pee - don't blame him though as the he probably saw the length of the queue for the gent's bogs.

Wouldn't have minded too much but he chose the spot right under the flag point and it was a very hot day - cannot remember who it was but I think he might have been continental as there was a distinct whiff of garlic

Sorry what I mean is everyone already knows that racing drivers frequently have to pee in their suits because what's the alternative, pull over at the nearest WC? Race with a catheter?

As far as I know tennis players do not have to do this.

Some do, some don't. It depends on the driver sizes.

Try that at Silverstone and the chequered flag would be shown before they actually got to the front of the queue.

For some lesser known but worthwhile (well, as worthwhile as can be) takes on the matter...

American driver coach Terry Earwood has a humorous story about how this particular task is accomplished in long-distance off-road races like the Baja 1000 (skip to 1:25:30).

Oriol Servia is also an authority on the practice. (skip to 1:16:10)

Of course I don't know it, but it seems unlikely as MS nearly always disappeared briefly before the race start - to take a pee.

It reminded me of this thread.

https://forums.autos...-weird-drivers/

Todd (a long banned forum member) started peeing rumours about Herbert - he was a massive Schumacher fan. He must have been mortified to have watched that interview on Ellen.

Would be interesting with a poll (among drivers). I suspect very few of them have actually done it since, as some has already explained, it is quite hard to pee while your're that kind of busy. Maybe the body switch mode at a certain level of need and just simply let go, but I have never been there.

The story about Schumi doing it "every race" is just not true.
