Wolff on car concept change

Wolff has previously stated that the W14 of 2023 will have different "DNA" to its predecessor as Mercedes seek to regain the title lost to Red Bull in 2022.

He hinted at a car which retained the 'zero sidepod' idea to challenge next season's RB19 from Milton Keynes.

"I go in the wind tunnel, and I say: 'That thing looks exactly like this year's car'," he explained to media, including RacingNews365.com,in Abu Dhabi.

"But they say to me: 'It's very different underneath'.

"It is about the airflow, the weight distribution, the aero map.

"Our car fundamentally changed mid-year - we changed the concept but you couldn't see anything on the bodywork.

"I think the narrow sidepod concept is like a red herring.

"It's full of surprises the last time I saw it in the wind-tunnel, but they told me it is not the same."

I suspect it will continue to be the most reliable engine..

Hopefully Merc and Ferrari close the gap to Red Bull and we get a great three team battle.

Firing the car up early worked so well for this year's iteration  :well:

For us, lets hope W14 remembers us of 2014.

It doesn't mean anything this year, doesn't it? It's the same engine as last year.

I'm sure they made a few improvements for reliability reasons. Like taking everything apart and improving every atom of the engine. 😁

Fully expecting the lack of sidepods to remain. What I'm interested to see is the suspension set up.

I do half wonder if the W14 might be similar to the 2011 Red Bull, which was the slowest car in a straight line but it didn't matter because cornerning performance was so strong. Even if zero sidepods cause drag issues, it's not the end of the story.

I really don’t want them to be slow in a straightline next year

The amount of winding going on with ratchets at the beginning of the video, I was thinking it was going to be a clockwork car.

If the team need motivation they should check RBR recent twitter post!

The philosophy behind the no-sidepods design was to get maximum downforce from the huge floor by running the car as low as possible. Clearly that didn’t work, despite some decent results after a massive effort fixing this unpredictable dog. I’m sure Toto won’t allow prestige or stubbornness to decide the techical path for the FW14, and I expect to see a more conventional design. After all, the FW13 has on Totos request been placed under a dustcover behind the janitors office at Brackley.

I’m quite confident the aero-crew can come up with great improvements, so I’m less confident and more intrigued about the PU. It absolutely needs to improve and I just pray they’re able to find something within the confines of what’s possible to do.

Where are all these people who endlessly droned on in the W13 about the sidepods being the issue?

In the RBR overspend thread acting like brats from the looks of it, this place is like a bloody playground with children screaming insults

I don't believe that's correct.

Sounds positive if true. Especially that they can simulate the porpoising

I think it’s probably just Mick jumping up and down on the front wing . . .

I'd be surprised if merc will have a title worthy car ...

Lots of brain drain, frozen medicore engine, on the backfoot understanding groundeffect cars, and Rbr appears to have nailed this ruleset.

Prepare for some years of Rbr dominance, unfortunately ...

In theory if they have a way to make that idea work with a new suspension configuration that does not trigger porpoising then they can shed a lot of drag.

Those floor stays were very draggy as were the wings they were running to compensate the floor downforce they removed to fix porpoising.

The fact such a compromised car was even capable of winning a race (and had half a chance in Silverstone / Austin / Hungary) shows the concept has potential.

I hope the rest of the article is more accurate, I already had a brain freeze at row 3 (the Losail Circuit is in Qatar, is it not?).

Unpopular opinion: I love the 2008 cars. They look like proper sophisticated hightech machines -- what F1 imo is supposed to be.

With six sprint races in the offering, they may have a chance.... in the rain.... with both Red Bulls at the rear with penalties....after the Ferrari and Alpine engines have exploded.... :😀

Yeah, repainted W11 or W12.  Looks to have the same narrow nose section, plus all the other carbon fibre furniture in the right places.

It is 10000000% not the 2023 car.

This year's car will be finally assembled just days (or hours) before launch/shakedown.

Painting is usually a last minute thing too.

No way is that this year's car.

No worries, it is the W11.

Our genius figured it out, the best solution, we will just put silver in that thing and roll.

The question is, will it win championships...

I have a sneeking suspicion we're going to be there or there abouts this season.

By Mercs standards 3-4 wins isn’t that good really😅

They developed the car well last year. If only they had a stronger start. I look forward to seeing what the W14 can do. Hopefully a return to true Kraken form, and a return to dominance.

I would take fighting for wins every weekend. I don’t think dominance will return unfortunately.

Why would you like dominance? You already had that for years. Give me 2012 type a season every day of the week.

I just want to see Lewis and George really having to fight Max and Charles. It adds another layer of tension in the wheel to wheel combat when there's something at stake.
