Wait wait wait... first time I see this picture. Any context ?
It was a TVC for Marlboro. Senna was unavailable for the shoot, so Prost was filmed wearing both helmets. 1989, if I'm not mistaken!

I must be getting repetitive because I've posted the same thing time and time again, but how is it modern drivers don't grasp the incredible marketing power of a consistent helmet design?
What is the actual marketing power of iconic/nice helmet design, apart from being appealing to some fans?
We just had Vettel with a pretty clean iconic design, but did this mean he sold more mini helmets or other merchandise compared to Verstappen, Hamilton or even Raikkonen? Likely not.
Sure, it is easier to associate nice designs with certain drivers and it creates certain identity, but I would not overestimate its actual value. People will continue to buy Verstappen's mini helmets regardless of how bad his design is.

It's the other way. The more variations you do the more opportunities you have to sell. Special editions and blah blah. Collect 'em all!

It's either new or a one off Scandi tribute to Vettel. Because his normal one is more 'traditional'

At this point it's a "Vettel style" because he was the most consistent and visible proponent of it. It's not a literal tribute to Vettel but a style close to his.

My point was that if you get anything – from a lunchbox to a bus – paint it yellow and then draw a green and blue stripe across it, it instantly screams Senna.
For instance, if Toyota were to launch a yellow Corolla with green and blue details, they could simply can call it the "Senna Special Edition" or whatever and I'm pretty sure it would appeal to his fanbase.
So an identifiable design can be easily replicated on anything the driver would want to sell to his fanbase, and to me that could be useful.
But as you said, we could simply write "VERSTAPPEN" on whatever the product is and it would probably get the same result, so maybe I'm just being a hopeless romantic about the issue...

Is he a golf fan? What's the uh, link? Otherwise they did a good job getting the texture right. So often these 'detail' helmets don't have the right look. Although in the photo it has the effect of the dimples seeming like circular stickers on top of a surface, rather than a depression.
And lord these helmets are depressing

Agree that the Photshop looks right and the actual image does not (if it is not a Photoshop as well, but I think it is real). The problem with the 'real' one is that the painter probably thought the simple shading for the dimples didn't look cool enough (i.e. where are the speed lines?) and added a subtle white outline around the whole dimple, then of course you need to drop shadow the f out of everything. So in the end it looks like trash and not a golf ball.
Not a golf fan, but find it funny and appreciate the simple stark colours. Shame the painter had to 'add their flair'.

Considering Norris' and Albon's choice of design, you'd expect this GP to be happening not in Miami, FL, but in Ball, LA.

Apparently the woman in the photo is his girlfriend who's a pro golfer. But yeah, the golf ball effect doesn't quite work in real life...

Yes, I thought that during the race, Magnussen should keep this one, bold and simple.
Much better than his usual mess.
Posted 10 May 2023 - 20:43
I agree in liking Magnussen's Miami helmet - it reminds me a little of Vettel's design in that it's a predominantly white helmet with stripes of different colours across the top. It's certainly no bad thing to be influenced by (in my opinion) the most distinctive and iconic F1 helmet of the last decade, but the K on the sides and the central blue stripe make the design his own.
