Thanks Kwissen, are you using full or mobile version? I downloaded Opera onto both the Fire and Win 11 desktop, both show pictures using the mobile version but not the full version. Same applies to using Firefox on the Fire, which I have also just downloaded. Is this all a ploy to get rid of the full desktop version?

I am always on a laptop, so full version.

If it helps, I am not having any problems seeing the images. I am using the following setup:

- Windows 7 Ultimate SP1

- Chrome version 107.0.5304.123 (Official Build) (64-bit)

- Ghostery ad blocker (it does not seem to make any difference whether it's enabled or not)

(so not the latest O/S or browser version)

Very strange. Symptoms don't appear quite the same for everybody. I must confess to being surprised when the Fire developed the problem almost a week in.

Remember classic? Poof, and it was gone.

Classic was a theme which only worked with the previous software. The current Atlas F1 theme replaced it.

Switching to the Mobile theme - while not ideal on desktop - does mean pictures display for me on Waterfox, Firefox and Vivaldi.

Seeing as quoting now takes you to a posting page, I'd say someone's been fiddling with things...

How does one get this 'mobile theme' thing going?

Bottom left of your screen, select 'change theme' and switch to 'Autosport mobile'.

I'd post a picture of where to find it, but ...

Same here so there is a work around. Silk however, Amazon's installed browser on Fire tablets, now doesn't show pictures at all, regardless of theme. Strange, because it worked normally on either theme until Wednesday of this week. Whilst it is possible to download other browsers, Firefox and Opera, neither have what could be called a pleasant appearance.

The issue really needs resolving which at this time appears to be far from a priority.

it's odd that this method doesn't work on all platforms, it does on desktop but not on Fire. However, there is a "use mobile version" button to the left of the "change theme" button which does.

I find so weird that there's people with Chrome that can see pictures, and people that cannot despite still using Chrome.

My one is also up to date (113.0.5672.127, 64 bit) but pictures are not showing.

Really a strange issue.

Okay, so there are still other things to fix and we don't want to stay on this 'mobile theme' forever... Have the 'developers' outwitted themselves?

I was speaking of the Classic Autosport theme, not forum. I don't think the software was changed, it was just dropped.

I wonder if it might be something to do with the window size (@media settings in the css)

EDIT:

Nope, I can't get it to fail no matter what size I make the window.

I still can't see photos on any browser on my laptop. I also don't know why we can no longer quote in the quick reply box.

Posting replies also takes a lot longer to load now, and there's no longer any notice of new posts being added while typing, even in quick reply.

Ooh, I've moved onto another computer and I can no longer see the images.

** WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND HOW TO SHOW THEM **

From the Chrome inspector, it looks like the class "post_body" is setting the width of the image to zero. To fix it (show the images), simply edit the "post_body" class and remove the "width: 0" setting. Hopefully, the developer can figure out exactly why that class is causing a problem and provide the proper fix.

EDIT:
I was just about to say that I was having certificate problems that were causing jquery to not be installed, but that seems to have disappeared and now the images are showing correctly. Maybe someone fixed it or maybe it was my PC.

Indeed it is. Two points, though ... OS is Windows 7 and Chrome finished support for Windows 7 at version 109, so cannot update anyway. Also ... it works !!

I don't think the problem with images has anything to do with the OS or the flavour or version of the browser being used - but I've not spent time debugging the issue to be 100% sure of that. I'm unable to replicate the problem right now, so it's possible that someone has made an update.

chdphd made a similar observation early in this thread, so you may be onto something. I think we are all chasing our tails recommending browsers when we all experience different results with the same browser and OS.

A major glitch like this has the potential to drive away even long-time forum members... It needs to be fixed, it's now twelve hours since my last post and there's no response to that. It's over a week since it all started to go bad and it's still bad. I'm not changing my browser, it works with every forum perfectly. Except for this one now. It's the forum software that needs fixing and it's the members here who deserve an answer about why they are putting up with this.

The problem is the JQuery lib, it does not load due to expired certificate  on https://cdn.images.autosport.com/

Issued On
Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 1:00:00 AM
Expires On
Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 1:59:59 AM

Just update the SSL certificate or load JQuery from  the official CDN

EDIT: Just change the line:

<script type="text/javascript" src="https://cdn.images.autosport.com/standards/js/jquery-1.9.1.min.js"></script>

to

<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.7.0.min.js" integrity="sha256-2Pmvv0kuTBOenSvLm6bvfBSSHrUJ+3A7x6P5Ebd07/g=" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>

Or find code for older versions here: https://releases.jquery.com/

I assume that JQuery is supposed to fit the image into the lightbox and when it's not there to do it, it defaults to zero.

Thanks Primo. So there we are, a certificate not renewed. Seems to be commonplace in motorsport, I can't access The Race because of an expired certificate. Housekeeping, there is little delay in claiming my subscriptions though. Get your act in order Autosport. Should we have a whip around to pay for a new certificate?

I cannot see the pic either and had the same problem as you before, picture I posted did not show up. It get the style width & height 0. Maybe OS related? I run Ubuntu and Chrome (tested also with Firefox).

In the editor here, I can see you picture in the quote, will be interesting to see if it is still visible after I click "Add Reply"

Edit: Found the problem, posted fix in Website Feedback

Are you saying that you've fixed the problem permanently for yourself, or are you having to apply the fix for every individual picture?

I guess it's once every time you (re)load the page. The code change given is for the developer to use to modify the server end.

Edit.

No, actually this change is just for the developer, I think.

Yes, it is only for the developer, it is a server side fix. The issue is likely to affect many different areas of this forum and all other websites that use the server cdn.images.autosport.com

...there is a fix for "personal use" though, client side, that will work for most, but not all clients:

1. Go to the site with the expired certificate: https://cdn.images.autosport.com/
It will say: "Your connection is not private"

2. At the bottom there will be a link "Proceed to server (unsafe)"

This will make your browser trust that site indefinitely,

Some of you will have other settings that prevent you from doing the above but it will work for the many.

NOTE: Doing the changes above will render the "Not secure" for this actual forum server since these forums then will contain mixed secure and unsecure content.

Brilliant thanks Primo. Works on Kindle Fire, got to sort the computer now.

Edit.

Also resolves the issue on Firefox running Win 11. My security system called the problem when trying to access the link and showed the expired certificate. The certificate which is Amazon's expired on 17th of May but was only renewed on March 1st. two months for a certificate seems very strange, nevertheless problem solved. Once again, many, many thanks Primo

It would improve the performance for this site only, but only ever so slightly, since it no longer have to deal with the errors caused by trying to load stuff that does not arrive. Then of course there is other things that JQuery might do to optimize the performance that can make bigger difference. Something it could not do when it was not there.

You are probably using settings that allows you to browse unsecure sites by default. You should look into that.

Yes, and also remember that the "fix" described is valid for the cdn.images.autosport.com only. Other fixes that opens up all unsecure sites by default are dangerous.

The risk in this particular case is A) Autosport decides to go evil or B) the server has been hacked and is no longer withion Autosport's control.

The extremely short certificate validity is strange, but the last thing a hacker would  want to do is to invalidate a certificate.

Considering how many active posters we have here, the unsafe settings appear quite common, my company laptop having no issues included. The company one I will address with IT tomorrow, my private I will leave as if for now then once this forum have been fixed will see how it will impact my general browsing.

So it's a certificate. Makes it even more cringe worthy that this hasn't been picked up by the developers or server administrators. And that's putting it mildly.

It has also worked for me.

Thanks guys.

But does this mean the developers will no longer continue to try to rectify the certificate issue? Or will they think "Oh good, problem solved. Back to my cuppa and cake"

I think the Autosport developers have very little interest in how a forum on the backend of their site, which have zero official administration as far as I can see. We are very low on the totem pole, I do not think it is a development issue per se, it is their server infrastructure person/people who have not updated it.

Not that it has any bearing, other than my work laptop give me messages of expired certificates, answer on my tickets were 'just ignore' which I take to mean not all certificates are mission critical and images here seem to be one of those non-essential.

If there were issues with images on the site proper it would be fixed within hours.
