On the inside of turn eight is a giant derelict office block with "for lease" written on it. Looks sad.

If there's only one that visible we can start the Detroit Comeback stories.
The revitalization is a few blocks north around the Rocket Mortgage HQ. Greektown and the area around the stadiums have been gentrified as well.

This circuit has shitshow potential come Sunday, a bit a la Nashville

If you asked ChatGPT to design a street circuit in Detroit, this is what I imagine it'd look like. Hopefully it'll produce some good racing come Sunday though.
I actually did while trying to get the ASCII map together. It produced a circle. D minus!

This was ugly back in the 1980s, and has not aesthetically improved. I am sure that GM is very happy with the enormous, central view of the Ren Centre, but I must be honest, this is not a good replacement for Belle Isle from the TV viewer perspective. I realize that modern Indycar in many ways channels the best of 1986-87-era F1, but this is not one of the moments that they should have embraced.

This race is going to be such a clusterfudge.

LOL apparently some of the teams are expecting so much yellow that they can get to the end on one pit stop?

Some of that has to do with want they could close for a weekend and having it at the base of the Ren Center. Even the new buildings in that area are fairly bland. It’s the epitome of old industrial downtown America. There are more scenic places downtown but I doubt they could be race friendly. Or even welcoming to the disruption.

I was there four weeks ago. Copy/paste this for several blocks and you should have a suitable mental image of Detroit.
Admittedly it looks better than it did when I last visited in 2016.

If only there was a lovely island in the river that could host the race that’s just a few minutes away.

They've stopped the bleeding but the patient is still in critical condition. Some of the older urban neighborhoods while having many if not most of the abandoned houses torn down are still fairly dystopian looking. Some blocks that had 20 homes now have 4 homes and 16 empty lots. At least most of the vacant lots are covered in grass. Meanwhile out in the ‘burbs all is normal.

The people with the money don’t want that. They’re promoting an area not so much a race. Could be that it’s this or nothing. Parts of the track were open for free today, including grandstands 1 and 9 with all of the grandstands GA. Doesn’t look like it worked for today. With Sun reported sold out in addition to all the hospitality areas it’s appearing it’s as much an exercise in activation more than a public event.

I get that, but the fact remains, Belle Isle was a decent location, and looked much better than this, even if it wasn't "Detroit" with the full corporate look in the background. I am not sure why Penske and others were so eager to do this when it does not seem like an upgrade from a product perspective.

If Ikeep restarting, at some point the live stream restarts from the beginning of the season, fast forward and it still stops at the same place.

Well, fair enough, but I think their logic is poor and it's not got a lot of business sense behind it. Also, after an Indy 500 that delivered on the entertainment/spectacle front, this is a terrible follow-up.

I wonder if anybody else got this problem. I have a subscription to live stream from the website, but I often get this problem, where the live stream suddenly stops. If I restart the live stream it play back the last 10 sec or so, just to stop again at the same place.
If Ikeep restarting, at some point the live stream restarts from the beginning of the season, fast forward and it still stops at the same place.
I didn't have that exact problem, but I repeatedly had a similar problem during the Indy 500 practice sessions: All of a sudden the stream would stop, then jump back say 20 seconds, then play for 30 seconds, then stop and jump back 20, then play for 30, etc. etc... I think this only happened when I was (chrome)casting to my TV but I'm not sure. Eventually, if I was lucky, the stream would make a bigger jump back, about two minutes or so, and after that it would play normally again for the rest of the session as long as I kept that delay.
I guess we should report these bugs...

Just seen some bits of practice. I sense that Sunday's race is going to be a cluster of epic proportions - what a crapshoot. I haven't read through the thread but I'm assuming the move from Belle Isle was due to a) NIMBY public nuisances wanting to protect the endangered three-tailed tadpole population, and b) encouraged by monied interests downtown who wanted to lay on some sponsor activations.

No No, not porn theaters …. REAL HOOKERS….
That’s what this place needs …on every apex and on the outside of the end of the backstretch…. Y’know like the Formula e boost corner they run through except it’s full of hookers … waiting on the outside of turn 3.
