Piquet going beserk when Jones was closing, the drama of the fuel stop, Villeneuve just kept on going!

I was in K2 stand. Piquet crashed right in front of us. For me the highlight was Gilles' qualifying lap. Achieved despite overtaking Stohr between Tabac and the swimming pool.

Regazzoni's rolling start, Siffert and the BRM on the limit through the first corners, frantic slipstreaming right to the chequered flag. Monza madness. Gethin receives the trophy from Margherita Bandini.

'I woz there' at this fantastic race – only thirty minutes from home. The final was just the culmination of a fantastic weekend, with heats, quarter finals and semi-finals, every one of them exciting. Johnny Herbert was driving for the low-budget Quest marque. He dumped it on the first lap of practice, so started his heat from the back of the grid after waiting with a 10 second penalty – and an untested car.

 

The entry included Damon Hill, Mark Blundell, Bertrand Gachot, Raikkonen’s future manager Steve Robertson, and many other “names”. My boss’s secretary lunched with Johnny before the final. For the historical record, he had a large helping of sausage and chips.

 

 

Van Diemen was dominant in FF, but Quest sold several cars on the strength of their win. They advertised in Autosport with the line:  “Help Beat VD: Buy a Quest.” Sadly, all the hopefuls discovered that they couldn’t beat VD at all, because they weren’t Johnny Herbert.

The Brands Hatch 1000k 1982. There was an absolutely thrilling finish. Ickx and Patrese were neck and neck for the drivers WEC title going into the race. A torrential downpour early on caused the race to be stopped. When restarted the respective times of each car were taken in to account so that at the end an aggregate time would be calculated. This meant that if Jackie Ickx/Bell Porsche could either beat the Patrese/Fabi car, or finish no more than 7 seconds behind, Ickx would get the title. Going in to the last stages of the race Ickx was at the wheel, with Teo Fabi in the Lancia. With light failing Ickx was in 2nd spot but still had a lot of work to do to get close to his rival, but he was clearly the quicker of the two. Approaching the final lap and with the crowd on their toes, Ickx just managed to bridge the time gap and finished just a couple of seconds behind Patrese's car to win the title.

A fabulous race. I was stood at Woodcote for it. I was waiting, like I am sure many others were, for Robert Brooks to be black flagged for the flapping bodywork. Thankfully the scrap was allowed to continue to its conclusion.

What an ending to this race - Peterson's final overtake of Depailler happened almost directly in front of me, being seated close to the first of the Esses. I was a fan of both drivers at the time, but was gutted for Depailler.

1985 Formula Ford Festival weekend for me as well. So many good drivers taking part and such great racing.

It was great watching local drivers  Pete Rogers and Rick Shortle taking on the likes of Herbert, Hill Blundell and Ratzenberger.

Shortle is on Facebook and recently put up my pictures of the first lap shunt at Druids. I would post them myself, but being a bit thick I am still trying to link a new printer to the computer.

Marvellous. All the right ingredients: low power, low grip, no downforce, on a brilliant undulating road circuit. And a horde of drivers supplied by Rent-A-Loony.

Now I know where the current F1 'narrator' got his early schooling... jeez, how often can you say "The Gasman!" in two minutes? 

 

Greatest Sprint Car Race? Not by a long way, too many crashes and too many silly mistakes. But 10,000 USD was a big loot for the West Coast boys in 2001, and the track appears to have been kinda tricky, with the 'cushion' going away and then coming back enough for Rutherford to ride the rim home to victory after earlier battling down Griffin while running on the bottom. By the way, winning car owner was Jack Gardner, well known son of Ray and nephew of the great Chet Gardner!!
