Having  endured plenty of people  telling me I really had no right to having enjoyed the Silverstone Festival so much . now it's Goodwood's turn for an extra helping of sniping in return for having allowed us to watch the entire event free of charge .

I paid to go in. The commentary was the same.

I went on the Sunday, and it was uncomfortably hot and humid, the weather breaking late only partial relief because the humidity was still there.  I don't know if it was because of the 30+ degree heat the day before but the dress code seemed a little more...relaxed.

Anyhoo, some pics.

^ most people's view of Jim

^ not so calm before the storm

^ Mrs Glam not present

^ no idea what was going on here

^ the Mother-In-Law car (and, given the Edwardians are such a hoot at the Members' Meeting, how about a Victorian race...mind you, one lap might be enough)

^ adding lightness?

^ how many actually won this?

^ a DVLA boob

^ Patina Mk II

^ out of this world

^ oh what a circus

^ to absent friends

^ schizoid

^ worldbeater

And a little indulgence of mine...

^ a pre-Worboys Committee route confirmation sign - so at least 59 years old

I find it a fairly silly idea to be wandering around in period clothing when it is 30 degrees outside, but people seem to enjoy it, so why not.

it is not for me, too expensive, too far away and a little too erm posh!

But as I say people seem to enjoy it. Not for me sadly. like most Goodwood events. For the same reasons.

To be fair to Ben, who did admit to little or no two-wheeled expertise, the Manx Norton is the exception that proves the normal 'maker/model' rule. You wouldn't talk about a Bonneville Triumph, a Commando Norton or a Silver Streak AJS would you?

Muddly Talker would have got it right of course - IIRC he did some bike commentary at previous Revivals? - but maybe now that Steve Parrish has finally hung up his helmet and leathers he might be in the box next year.

Jimmie Johnson managed to refer to Marino as Dario on a live interview.

Steve Parrish would and always has been a great bike commentator.

I am in full agreement on this: signposts of similar vintage always raise a smile.

Having started this thread by moaning about the entry time these are my post event reflections having attended on friday and watched the livestream  intermittently on saturday and sunday.

It is still a fantastic event !

The livestream is a wonderful free resource.

I gave up grumbling about the historical accuracy of some of the cars years ago.

The commentary is a problem. It was at its best when it was Marcus Pye and Bruce Jones et al. I like Bruce Jones and i dont mind Alice Powell .However Ben Edwards and Alex Jacques should be replaced; historic racing is not their area of expertise. I think part of the problem is that the commentators now seem to calling the race from the TV pictures rather than from looking out of the window and at the timing. it might be better if they used people like Marcus P, Russel Douglas, Alastair Douglas etc for the trackside commentary and use Ben and Co for the livestream.

I'm not sure  it was worse than previous years but there did seem a lot of time lost to safety cars and red flags.

I'm not a fan of single make races but the Fordwater Cup was excellent.

The cars in the paddocks were mouthwatering.

I have experience of the situation where events are live streamed. As a commentator you are torn between talking about what is appearing on the live stream and what you can see out of the box. The live stream screen provides you with a different view and in the case of speed events, I have commentated using live stream at Harewood & Loton Park, it provides images of the track you can't see from the commentary box. I gather from the Goodwood live stream broadcast that the old commentary box out in the country isn't used anymore thus the team are being paid to commentate on what is on the screen not on their limited view out of the box near the start. I also assume that all those radio earwigs are used by spectators to listen to the commentary at the venue plus having several large screen dotted around showing the live stream. I agree with Nick105 that you need two commentary teams - one for the spectators at the event and one for the live stream audience. Goodwood should be able to afford that luxury judging by the tickert price and the cost of programmes.

I watched most of the live stream and at times I turned the sound off and still enjoyed it.  The captions and timing column gave pretty much all the info I needed. I turned it on again to hear the BRM V16 only for the commentators to keep on chatting over the sound but of course for those at the circuit it did not matter. Commentators do a hard job and have to strike a compromise for families as well as a more knowledgeable audience. I'm just thankful that we have the broadcast at all.

The BRM was one of the few cars I've seen running that made me put my hands over my ears. I've only ever done that with NASCAR stocks and at a drift event once. Brutal.

A couple of years ago there was a BRM track parade and I found the V12 GP cars similarly ear-splitting. I sat at Lavant and the noise came when they accelerated onto the Lavant straight.

McLaren F1 GTR for painful noise, though the Matra MS670 came close. The BRM V16 sounds lovely but not nearly as loud.

Unfortunatly it is only good for maybe 5 laps than breaks down. Quite fast however when actually running. Though that is against pre war cars.

In period a lot of races at Goodwood were run over five laps and indeed BRM's first victory at Goodwood came in the five lap Woodcote Cup at the September 30th 1950 meeting. Later in the afternoon Reg Parnell persuaded the V16 to last the twelve laps of the Goodwood Trophy, taking a well earned victory.
