Race car drivers are athletes and have to follow a strict diet regimen, regardless how much they do or don't like it. In this of season however I seem to come across more food and drinks related posts than ever on drivers' social media, everyone's my favorite mexican channeling his inner Jamie Oliver being the most recent.

Which got me thinking: Who is a foodie on wheels, who simply doesn't bother?

As far as I know Sainz is quite a foodie, O'Ward definitely is well, Norris is a picky eater (although an enthusiastic one and a bit of a sucker for biscuits), Hamilton is vegan, Button (and Ricciardo?) invested in a brewery, while Hinchcliffe and Wickens time and time again confirm the cliché of beer guzzling canadians. Bottas however is a caffeine addict and then of course is the James Hunt school of breakfast.

Anything else?

Jimmy Johnson definitely has a fondness for winery tours where he can make someone else drive.

I dislike the term "foodie", but E.J. Viso and Oriol Servia come to mind. Viso admitted a great fondness for arepas, but hoped his trainer didn't overhear that   ;)

Well, Jacques Villeneuve used to own a restaurant, the Newtown, but I've no idea if he ever set foot in the kitchen or if it was just to have a place to party on Crescent street during the Montreal GP... (?)

Augusta Farfus is OBSESSED with RC planes, so much so that he bought an actual airplane hangar in which to store his collection and fly them.

Michael Schumacher would celebrate the end of a title winning season with a cigar. I believe he once shared one of his cigars with Damon Hill, who didn't enjoy smoking it.

In his book "To Hell And Back", Niki Lauda mentions smoking weed gave him a flashback to the time he nearly died after his 1976 accident. I don't recall any photos of him smoking anything when he was racing but during his first and his final retirement he was often seen with a cigarette.

Jan Magnussen was a big time tobacco smoker, to the extent that it really pissed Jackie Stewart off when he drove for the Stewart team. As far as I know, Jan still smokes.

Jean Alesi is another vineyard owning (ex) driver....hasn't he owned a well respected vineyard since the mid 90s?

Keke Rosberg was, of course, a voracious smoker. But times were different then.

In addition to his breakfast habits, James Hunt was a highly respected champion budgie breeder.

Elio de Angeils was a concert pianist. During the drivers' strike of 1982 when they locked themselves inside a hotel, he kept everyone entertained by playing piano.

Isn't Sergio Perez quite the stockmarket player?

Charles Leclerc has been known to play piano on his youtube channel, so I assume that's quite an interest for him.

I've seen a pre-Nürburgring pic of him in Ferrari gear smoking a small cigar. The lung damage from the crash surprisingly didn't put an end to his smoking days.

Pretty sure we saw Mika by himself at a Wing joint in Indianapolis at one of the first USGPs.

I don't prefer to bother famous people so I failed to find out but it sure did look like him and others noticed as well.

I heard about butter in coffee as the sailors in the old days used that instead of milk which spoiled too fast, not sure if an urban myth.

I remember back in the late 1990s all the magazines etc made a big deal of Jan Magnussen being a smoker as if he was the only driver who’d ever go anywhere near a cigarette in this age of superhuman Michael Schumacher level athletes. Now in hindsight we know that was rubbish - loads of them still smoked, loads of them. Not least Schumacher himself with his cigars, Hakkinen, Frentzen, Salo…I feel a bit sorry for Magnussen, he got so much bad press and never really stood a chance.

They’re human, and I bet loads of them like to indulge a bit in the off season, like to go out and be a bit daft (see Sergio Perez after Monaco), but mostly they’re able to do it without being ‘outed’ in a way that’s detrimental to their perfectly crafted image as boring robots.

I think Jan Magnussen ended up talked about so much for a couple of reasons.

I know people who used to hang out with him in his F3 days, and he would often be seen in his local pub pretty much chain smoking in the evening. It seems his habit for cigarettes was quite a large one, more so than other drivers at the time who were occasional smokers. Schumacher enjoyed an end of season cigar but stayed away from them from January until the season closer.

The other thing is that Jan drove for Jackie Stewart in F1, and JYS is definitely very anti-smoking. He has always found it disgusting and always advocated that people give up. Having a heavy smoking driver in his team, in an age when young people were far less likely to smoke than in the 60s, irked Jackie. It didn't help that Jan wasn't exactly setting the world on fire with his driving and was refusing to take advice from JYS and even Rubens about correct lines through corners etc.

Frenzten might have enjoyed a Rothmans or two, but he wasn't flaunting it down the Fox & Duck every evening.

I think Pedro de la Rosa was the most recent regular smoker, although I suspect some still will partake every so often, and away from cameras and social media (especially if you include cigars and other "luxury" methods of smoking).
