Please does anyone know the details of the rookie test format from the mid-60s to mid-70s? I understand the rookie had to turn a set number of laps at a set average speed, then repeat this at a higher speed, but can't find a reference anywhere for the speeds and number of laps, which I understand changed each year.

Thanks in advance.

1965 and 1966 were 40 lap tests, 10 each at 130mph, 135mph, 140mph and 145mph.

Usually (always??) four ten-lap segments, with speeds adjusted over time.

I think it was originally 5 x 10 laps back when first introduced (in 1936, the year so many Indy traditions began).

Found my 1968 track report:-

"Rookie tests.....consisted of 10 laps at 140 mph, 145 mph, 150 mph and 10 laps at a speed of over 150 mph comfortable to the driver. On the 140, 145 and 150 mph phases the driver is required to keep within 4 mph above the speed or 1 mph below. On the final 10 lap phase a crew of veteran driver observers is used to observe the rookie."
