That's unfortunate with how well he started the season. I wish him a quick recovery. Hopefully he can be back at 100% for the next race.

That's a bummer. He was posting on Instagram not an hour ago and no mention of it.

If true, wishing him a speedy recovery. I really hope Ferrari go with Bearman.... please not bloody Schwartzman!

Edit: Confirmed; Sainz has appendicitis and will be replaced by Bearman.

Must be a lot of confidence in the lad. Bring it on.

Yikes, poor Sainz. Hope he feels better soon. Guess there's a chance he misses Australia as well, even if it's 2 weeks away, it's a long flight and doctors might not advice that if he needs surgery, especially with such a physical impact F1 cars have,

Really sad news for Sainz, and I wish him a speedy recovery. A baptism of fire for Bearman, who might also potentially lose a shot at the F2 title as a result of this. Best of luck to him.

Does that mean Bearman is not racing the F2 races?

I recall that it is forbidden for drivers to compete in both F1 sessions (except free practice) and F2 sessions.

Sad for Sainz but excited for Bearman. Bearman loves this track, so a great opportunity for him.

yes but realistically if the pace between teams is similar here than Bahrain, he will be fighting for low points positions.

But Bearman might surprise and open the F1 doors with some noise!!

Bearman getting even a single point would be a brilliant achievement.

That's rough for Sainz, best wishes on his recovery.

You've got to think, could Bearman have not driven one of the practice sessions yesterday.

Tough weekend for Bearman, but he is quick at the track, good luck to him!

Bagged pole yesterday, didn't he?

Best of luck to him. Good thing for him is there will be zero pressure.

This is a rough circuit to sit for the first time for an F1 race... I cannot help but think these bloody street circuits are terribly dangerous with their lack of run off areas. Crash into a wall, you bounce back in the middle of the track :(

I wish Sainz a speedy recovery, and best of luck to Bearman as stepping into a Ferrari for your first F1 race with only one practice session will be one hell of a challenge.

At least he's just driven practice and qualifying on the same track in the same conditions. Albeit in a significantly slower car. He's not "cold".

Let's hope for a speedy recovery for Sainz. I have enough confidence for Bearman to keep it out of the walls, however I do think he won't be in the mix for the top spots in qualifying or the race. But I wouldn't mind him suprising me on that part!

Quote "If you had laparoscopic surgery, you will probably be able to return to work or a normal routine 1 to 3 weeks after surgery. If you had an open surgery, it may take 2 to 4 weeks. If your appendix ruptured, you may have a drain in your incision. Your body will work fine without an appendix." And these guys have a sporting body so I do expect Sainz to be there again in Australia

I had a feeling we’d see an Englishman replacing Sainz at Ferrari this season.

As an early Mercedes swap though - not like this…

Get well soon Carlos, and go get ‘em Ollie!!!

Robert Shwartzman must be disappointed too. But Bearman was there and knows the circuit, so is the best option.

Antonio Giovinazzi's had his chance and I predict he would have binned it anyway.

I'd be surprised if Sainz misses Australia as well.  In relatively recent history, Albon, Irvine and Häkkinen only missed one race due to the same condition, and Albon also had a severe reaction to the anaesthetic which caused additional complications.

Sh.t, Carlos was doing really well. Hope for a quick recovery, he shouldn't rush it particularly if he has to have a surgery

A top 10 finish would be very good but probs a bit unrealistic for him. A clean race would be deemed a success.

I’m quite confident it won’t be Badoer 2.0

Along with Monaco, this is probably the worst track for such a thing to happen. And it happens on qualifying day, not before Free Practice :(

It's also really not what Sainz needed in his "shop-window" season.  At least he had a good race in Bahrain.

Bearman is on-site and has driven the circuit already this weekend due to his F2 commitments, so he is the obvious choice in this case.

It's a dream opportunity.

He's surely throwing away the f2 championship for it, but this might be his only opportunity to drive a Ferrari so why not. Just hope he doesn't crash it. Would be the worst of both worlds!

So Bearman pips Hamilton to be the first English driver race for Ferrari in F1 since Mansell, I believe.  :stoned:

Great opportunity for the lad. Hope he does well.

Good luck to Bearman! I guess he could have used some practice yesterday, but on the other hand I'm sure he gained some confidence by getting pole in F2.

Unlucky, just what he doesn't need right now.

Can't see him being back for Aus, 2w for stitches to heal appears unlikely. When Albon missed Monza in 22, the next race was 3w later.

Yes, but he shares the role with Giovinazzi and Shwartzman.  As ever, who is chosen from the roster in practice depends on various factors.

Best wishes to Carlos for his recovery!

A big weekend for Ollie, but wow... going straight into FP3. But with so many contracts ending before the 2025 season it's a great opportunity to get visibility.

Indeed; this is basically how De Vries got himself a (seemingly) full-time F1 drive for 2023.

Then again, remember the last driver who did well as a sub for an appendicitis-striken racer...

(but I think Bearman is very good).

Yeah, interesting challenge for him. One example that comes to mind is Lundqvist, who walled it in Nashville but set the fastest lap before he did it. Now he's racing for CGR. Bearman could crash but if he's running high up the field, it could be worth it.
