It's not just that RB is so great, it is that Max is so great in that RB. He is dominating Perez, who isn't a bad driver. While we do not know, I would put money down that Max in the Ferrari would be on pole today. Max is at his peak; still all the quickness of youth aided by the experience of being in F1 for so long already. While perhaps it makes for some boring races or seasons, seeing Max in action (when they show him! I sometimes go to his camera in the F1TV app just to watch) is incredible.

How far is Perez now from a race ban? I think he is on 10 penalty points now.
8 points according to https://www.autospor...=Penalty points

It did.Just realised last year's RB would only have qualified in 8th behind Russell.

What context? That he even could have been second?
The context of Ferrari not screwing Leclerc. He should have been 3rd last year with the same reliability/normal strategy of Lewis.

Hilarious but oh so true
AFAIK no one's mentioned SAR had a high-speed 360 in FP but kept it out of the barriers; could easily have been neither car on the grid.

Maybe all the other teams would have pulled out of the race in solidarity?

It is a concern though that he's been behind Russell all season so far

They were both in the same race, Lewis having lost 8 more points. But overall Charles luck (not counting his own mistakes of course) was devastating losing a few dozens of points some of wich ended in Lewis pockets.

As much as the Ham haters will get on his case about missing Q3, he very nearly set the same time as George in Q2. Mercedes in that session were just not good enough.
It is a concern though that he's been behind Russell all season so far
That comparison is George's first run on used tires vs Hamilton's 2nd run on new tires. George aborted his 2nd run on new tires before T3 because he was told he was safe. He was all green mini-sectors before then.
There was still a bit of margin today in Russell's favor.
Will that carry over to the race or future qualy sessions? I have no idea.

Max and RBR are doing an extraordinary job right now, and I can only admire that. I look forward to the others digging deep, upping their game and taking the fight to him/them as the season progresses.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't have the energy to be so negative about drivers making mistakes any more. Since the new formula began in 2022, these cars have been tough to maximise, and these peaks and troughs in performance have been commonplace across the grid, with Verstappen typically as the exception (although even he has had the odd rough session/weekend here and there). I find myself getting seasick in these threads with the waves of volatility in how the drivers are being perceived/presented from race to race.

I think the race is going to be more interesting than people are assuming. To qualify and to race are different things. Ferrari had very good looking long runs in FP2. Red Bull still looked like they were struggling with graining on their long runs.

+add some possible SC/RF, it could be chaotic and/or really close

Hopefully Ferrari can challenge Red Bulls tomorrow in Melbournes track so that we can see exciting race tomorrow for the win, i still think Max will be quickest despite Ferraris improvement this weekend.
The season starts in Australia for me.

I read somewhere (can't find now) that the titanium skid blocks have a distinctive smell, so may be that?
Glad you're having a good time.
Yeah could be that - the odour while present at T13 didn't seem as strong even though that is a heavier braking zone. Unless of course my nose was getting used to the smell by then...

I'm on record as saying they are going to regret signing him.
Maybe Fred is being clever and thinks Hamilton, at this stage of his career will do enough for Ferrari but he (Fred) changes team dynamic from an effective 1+1 driver pairing that he has now, to a 1 + 2??

Max 1st
Perez 2nd.
So folks have your beauty sleep and save your Sunday for something better.
Spend some quality time with your wife or kids. Or get some fresh air.
Don't waste it on F1.

I wasn't getting up anyway. 4am?!! Forget it.
4am is a great time for the Oz GP. Like the good old days, before Ecclestone screwed around with it. I've not set the alarm for it or Suzuka for a good number of years though. Maybe had it been the first race of the year it would have been tempting. If I wake up, then all good, I'll switch on. But it's so easy now to catch up on it at a decent hour. And avoid feeling the effects of no sleep come Monday morning.

Diddums. Soft bloody Brits...
Back in the good old days of Hakkinen vs Schumi I'd have pulled an all nighter and stayed up talking to people on IRC whilst we waited for the race. Nowadays I don't care enough about F1 to even get up at 6am for a race. Especially not when the outcome is decided on Saturday. Or is it Friday. *grumble*

I will. Afterwards. Wife and kid will be sleeping at 5am up here. So when they are all rise and shine, daddy did watch the race, already has cooked breakfast and is ready to rock the day away.
