Verstappen on pole, some allegedly quick Ferraris behind him, Lance Stroll outqualifying Lewis and Fernando... It's the Australian Grand Prix! Last year had more red flag stoppages than green flag running, or so it felt. Alex Albon will be on his best behaviour after Friday's spare car debacle at Williams, and the rest of the field will be grateful that if the Alpine drivers collide again they'll probably do it at the back of the pack.

Race start is 4am for Brits. Hope to see you then, I think. Enjoy.

5am here. Thats a more decent time I'd say.

Anyway I am somehow a bit excited for this one. Got a hunch that it will be a crazy race.

And in 8 hours from now everyone will scold me over my hunch not being right at all.

Race is at 9 pm for me, for once it’s not an early morning affair.
I hope it will be entertaining, that’s all I ask for.
Always loved races in Australia, fond memories of staying up late with my cousin to watch the season finales in Adelaide back in the day up to JV’s incredible debut race in Melbourne and so on.

Where are you that it starts at 9pm? Hawaii?

I missed last year's race as I had plans and I'll miss this one due to sleep, but I'll record it and watch it when I wake up... if it's anything other than a RB 1-2 with a 20+ second gap to a Ferrari in 3rd I'll be amazed.

On the Adelaide note, I wanna say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Adelaide Motorsport Festival coverage they had up on YouTube last weekend. Even a truncated Adelaide circuit was bringing back nice memories of that amazing street track. Damon’s presence and revisiting of the corner he lost the title at in 1994 was great stuff.

Race starts about the same time as Vegas here in Central time zone. 11PM.

Kind of crazy but definitely workable.

And much better than the 4-7AM range.

I shall rise again for my annual Ozzy fix! However, should it be a snooze fest, I will not resist the temptation to drift back into a slumber and pretend it never happened.

I'm applying cream to my aching muscles and sunscreen to my slightly toasted nose, prepping sandwiches and my backpack. Off to the track soon!

southernstars...I've just been watching Supercar races highlights on FreeTube... awesome stuff. Must be fascinating to actually be there with the track action over the weekend.

The mind was willing. The flesh is sore and tired. Gotta pace myself for the main event today.

They are really frickin' epic as they thunder down to T1 as a pack. Loud, grunty, mean-looking, constantly giving each other the hip-and-shoulder. I think the drivers collectively enjoy showing off at Albert Park. It's such a contrast to the main event.

4am race start crew checking in, I’m gonna stay up until then, at least it’s starting at a similar time to earlier Oz races at Melbourne.

I’ll ask the important question:

What sandwich filling?

There’s no way I’ll be able to stay up… so I’ve got my alarm set. But, the F2 feature starts in 45 mins… ho hum

Ham and cheese. The food at the track is highly overpriced for what you get, as with many sporting events, though it seems worse at Albert Park.

Have to say one thing I didn't mention on my observations from Friday, when I went 15yrs ago the GP crowd was definitely predominantly male (maybe 80%?) and towards the older demographic. Now though, I would say it's closer to a 50-50 split and the demographic has certainly shifted younger - lots of 18-25yr olds.

The GP has now become more of an event to be seen at as well - lots of fashionistas (or wannabes at least ) - along with the Australian Open and the Melbourne Cup is has become something more than just a sporting event.

Whatever you might say about DtS, it has definitely shifted things for this race....

Nothing better than a Sunday afternoon race in your own time zone.

I’m watching from my couch, and slightly envious of those actually at the race, but I haven't got the energy for that these days.

It looks warmer today than yesterday. That should help to reduce graining.

It's gonna be interesting and exciting one, I feel. Lots of unknowns with high probability of safety car. I love Albert Park and it signifies the beginning of the season for me. First two races were just extended testing sessions :D

To those watching the National Anthem I should explain that unlike other countries, we don't make do with one flag. We have three!

Gaah! :) Luckily not likely.

Rare but slightly more likely to be my conspiracy theorist neighbour, unless he’s finally got the message I’m avoiding him.

And the national anthem has been sung. Nothing too obnoxious. Oh, and hi!

Yep. Missed the feeling of such early races. Used to have quite a few on the calendar, China, Malaysia etc as well

OK, now it feels like proper start oh the season, like 25 y ago when I was crazy about F1.

Probably I will go back to bed by lap 10, but I give 2024 F1 a chance

This feels like an actual F1 race, some daylight, a familiar track, packed grandstands, it’s a shame the powers that be don’t give a hoot about any of that.
