Aston Martin makes offer to poach Newey from F1 rival Red Bull (motorsport.com)

If I were Stroll, I would sign Newey as a 'development driver' so he falls outside the cost-cap  :rotfl: He's a racing driver after all and develops the car.

I'm getting really suspicious now that we are about to witness Aramco Honda Racing F1 Team.

Not sure why this is news.

We know he has had offers from Ferrari, Aston Martin and probably every other team.

Just sounds like Stroll has gone to the media and claimed to have offered him more money than the other teams as a PR exercise.

I'm wondering if the vultures circling around the Red Bull's wounded body will eventually, involuntarily, strengthen Red Bull.

Didn't a good designer already went to AM from RB last year?

As much as I would like to see this (minus the Aramco bit of course), I think Stroll has invested too much in Aston Martin the company to put another auto maker's name on the F1 team.

Dan Fallows, new technical director at AM as of last year. He's part of a number of engineers that have made the RB -> AM migration.

I’m just wondering how long he’ll go on for. I’ve always got the impression he loves what he does but he is basically at retirement age. My dad, who was in the same university graduation group as Adrian, retired a few years ago.

Its quite a late stage in life to be going somewhere new, but I can see him doing so in more of a semi-retired advisory position.

Hmmm.

In many ways, that’s a reasonable reading, but in terms of F1 - he’s going to Ferrari (i.e. the marque), where he hasn’t been, and (effectively) to join Lewis, who will be seeking his eighth (all-time record) WDC.

I think moving up the road to Aston Martin with former colleagues who have inserted many of his processes is much more likely at this stage of his life/career than moving to Italy and starting with a comparatively new staff that operates in it's own unique way.

I think it's more likely he'll go to Aston than Ferrari, if Aston stump up a massive amount of cash.

Yes, he said years ago he regrets not working with Ferrari and Hamilton, but that was then and this is now...I think people underestimate the commitment of upping sticks and moving to a different country with a different language at his age.

Sometimes I feel bad for other engineers!

Anyway!

A genius designer and a genius driver combination is always a good thing. Adrian Newey wants to work with Fernando Alonso and it is Fernando Alonso's turn to have some consecutive years of domination and he deserves it.

If they are clever the offer will be for Newey to do anything he wants.

Newey doesn't need to be in their F1 team to close the gap, he just needs to be out of RB.

Here's an idea that's never been considered before and would surely work seamlessly... what if Adrian were to open a remote design office for Ferrari in England so he wouldn't have to move to/integrate into Italy?? Why haven't Ferrari pursued this before???

I remain convinced Newey will either go to Ferrari or he'll retire once he's finished at Red Bull.

Unless he sells the whole thing, team, auto manufacturer and all.

I don’t see Newey going from multi time championship team that's still dominating to someone trundling mid pack.  He’s already got more dough than he can spend given his relative low key lifestyle.

Office space is cheap in Croydon with the bonus your new British driver isn’t likely to turn up unannounced or otherwise…

Probably in a design office at one of the teams, and relatively anonymous at the moment.

When Adrian started designing F1 cars, you could count the number of engineers in a team on one hand. Big talents came to the public eye quite quickly. It’s very different today.

That still means that the salary of the current 3rd highest paid would be pushed into the budget cap calculation, unless they get rid of someone at the top to make way for Newey's salary.

Saw EJ speculating that Lance is going to be dropped in favour of Sainz next season.

Newey seemed to enjoy doing the road car project for Aston didn’t he?

I'd forgotten about that link. Adrian has previous with the brand. Could be a good way to ease into retirement.

If anything, that would be a disincentive. Although Newey and some of his Red Bull team were part of the Aston Valkyrie project at the start, after Stroll got control of the road car company he ordered a cost-cutting drive that including cheapening many parts of the Valkyrie, which resulted in a massive weight gain and many compromises. Since then Red Bull have announced their own 'hypercar' project that is meant to do most of what the Valkyrie was supposed to do - but better and without the compromises - and Newey has been involved with that:

Hmmm. Hadn’t thought of that.

(In part because I hadn’t heard that he really wants to work with Señor Alonso.)

Unfortunately, Fernando would have to stick around for four more years and secure the WDC in October 2028 if he wanted to beat Fangio’s record as the oldest to win it.

So, let’s look at it this way:

Newey goes to Ferrari next year, works at raising the car to another level so that it’s ready to be untouchable throughout the 2026 season, which means Lewis wins his 8th, then Mister Adrian goes to Aston Martin and helps the Spaniard best Juan Manuel.

Zat orajt?

Yep, and didn't Newey say once that a big factor in turning Ferrari down previously is that he didn't want to be so far from his current wife, because when he worked in IndyCar the long distance was a major factor in his marriage back then breaking up. I wonder if that's still a concern or not.

I wonder if due to specialization we won't really see a Newey again, and that future great TDs will be the Brawn type manager of people.  I understand he is seen as an aero guy, but he is an aero guy who had to come to understand the other parts of design and even manufacturing - a holistic consideration.  I have to think that helps form the foundation of a whole package.  Pat Symonds was on the recent Beyond the Grid and mentioned how aerodynamicsts can design an elegant wing profile, but put no thought in how to structurally engineer and produce them, thus they get binned.

I think Adrian has more time than Fernando. Having said that, I also assume he wouldn't be able to join Aston Martin right away, so depending on any gardening leave or similar he might not be able to make a proper impact before 2026 or 2027. It would make it a proper option for Max though, as I think Aston with Newey is more attractive than Mercedes without him.

Why would Newey want to leave as close to his retirement?

He has had a lot of liberty to work on what he wants at Red Bull and they are easily winning these regulations.

Moving to Italy and at Ferrari would be brave. Not necessarily smart, but brave
