The last F1-track where two drivers died in one weekend: Ayrton Senna and Ronald Ratzenberger. The track that ultimately led to the death of perhaps the most legendary F1-driver, Gilles Villeneuve. Who doesn't remember how Gilles felt betrayed by his teammate Didier Pironi, because the latter overtook him on track, while Gilles swore to know they had agreed not to?
Many around them tried to calm Gilles down, including Jacky Stewart on the podium. But Gilles was so incensed that two weeks later he took a risk during qualifying at Zolder that even he couldn't handle and after a collision with Jochen Mass perished in a horrible crash. Later that year 'sure-champion-to-be' Didier Pironi took comparable unnecessary risks in the rain at Hockenheim and crashed heavily, ruining his chances and his F1-career (and later died in a powerboat accident, leaving behind his wife and unborn twins, who were called Gilles and Didier...)
2021 was the race where Verstappen and Hamilton proved what happens when two unmovable forces clash. We haven't seen that scoundrel-like Verstappen the past two years, more an Alain Prost-like machine who, even when he does not start from pole-position but somewhere in the mid-field, manages to stay out of trouble. But perhaps when the McLaren-boys are as good in Imola as they were last time round, Mad Max will emerge again? Or has he, just like Jody Scheckter, Niki Lauda in their days, learned that you don't have to be the fastest all the time but mostly the smartest?
