It's start of another triple-header folks. Barcelona might not with us for that much longer - unless something miraculous happens - and it's also sort of lost some of it's old fame as the starting point for big Euro upgrades, now that it's so "late" in the season. Nevertheless, it's old school circuit that many still like. AND there are updates plenty. Is it back to Verstappen domination / Perez humilation or something else? Welcome to the Spanish GP.

I will say it every time: if we can race at Baku, why not return to Montjuich?

Every weather site says Sunday chance of rain in the early morning, NOT in the afternoon.

Apart from the obvious technical difficulties, I don’t think there would be any political support for it.

They actually did quite a road show today in Barcelona city center with some drivers and cars having fun in Passeig de Gràcia street (wide and nowadays very very tourist oriented avenue with kind of 'high level' boutiques). Among others, Sainz was driving a 2022 Ferrari and Doohan a V8 2012 Renault/Lotus in disguise. It was quite a success together with the different F1 related exhibitions and activities they've been running during the last days in the area.

Living close to BCN but having to go there to work from the office today, I made sure to stay as far as possible from those streets, as my threshold for crowds is quite low these days. :drunk:

Will hopefully mean a green track though so a bit of tyre strategy variance.

That city is quite planar......bring on the rain, it's the only thing that makes F1 tolerable these days.

We'd all better prepare for a Red Bull 1-2. Normal track, dry circumstances, no excessively high kerbs, weather variables in the window.. yep this suits Red Bull.

Well, we can prepare for Red Bull 1-4 or 1-5 at least.

Rain looks likely overnight and into Sunday AM. Bring on a green track. At the very least should be a 2-3 stopper with a mix of strategy.

The field spread here was small over one lap last year. Assuming everyone can now take the final corner flat out, the gaps should be even smaller this year.

To some, Barcelona is considered a bit of a boring circuit with a lack of overtaking. However, there has been a lot of memorable action going on:

The famous battle of Senna and Mansell in 1991.

Nigel-Mansell-and-Ayrton-Senna-are-side-

Schumacher establishing himself as the Rainmeister in 1996:

the-ferrari-team-celebrate-mic.jpg

Hakkinen lost a certain win in 2001 due to an engine failure in the last lap. DC served as a local taxi driver to bring him home.

A35.jpg.img.1536.high.jpg

Unforgettable: Maldonado took his only win in 2012:

Maldonado.jpg

Alonso's last win to date in 2013:

000759af-1600.jpg

In 2016 the crash of Hamilton and Rosberg allowed Verstappen to take his maiden win.

In recent years, we have been short of outstanding moments. Will this weekend be different?

At least it's not the horrifying 40+ celsius inferno they have in southeastern Europe... pure luck it's not there now

I have been in Egpyt for 8 days, and the coldest of those days was 44 degrees!  Nearly every day has been 46 degrees, further down south, Luxor, Aswan, overnight temp hits a minimum of 31 degrees at the moment.  It's so odd being somewhere where it's 40 degrees at 9pm but it feels totally comfortable as the sun is down!!!!

Imagine Pirelli coping with a race run here.... though there is a new bridge opening across the Nile in Aswan in the next few days that would make an amazing part of a Egypt street track!!!

IMO, the two most memorable Spanish GP were those of 1951 and 1981.

In 1951, the race was held at the Pedralbes urban track in Barcelona (not related to the later Montjüic track). It was the last race of the season and the title decider. Fangio (Alfa Romeo, in the image below) beat Ascari (Ferrari) thanks to a better tyre strategy. You know, the importance of tyre strategies is not a modern concept in F1...

1951-Spanish-GP.jpg

The 1981 Spanish GP (the last year when the GP was held at the Jarama track, near Madrid) was the last F1 win of Gilles Villeneuve. He took a great start, jumping from P7 on the grid to P2 behind Jones, he inherited the lead when Jones went off track and managed to keep it thanks to his top speed, despite being much slower on the twisty parts of the track. He built a train behind him, with five cars in slightly more than one second, one of the closest finishes in the history of F1.

Nope. I'm 3 hours south of Barca and I can say up here in the mountains it has been a veritable flood of Noah's Ark proportions the last week!

Tobi Grüner (on Twitter/X)

We hear RB will bring the biggest upgrade of the season to Barcelona:

new bodywork, new floor, new sidepods, new rear wing.

Will it be enough to close the gap to Aston Martin?

And on speed Tsunoda was already as fast or faster than them

And Jacques was too, at Jarama. Pole-position in 1979, 1980 and 1981. He never won it…

Doubt.

Barcelona & Catalonia goverment is not much interested in F1. Meanwhile Madrid goverment is the opposite. It´s said that F1 fee offer from Madrid almost double the Barcelona one.

It´s a shame , TBH, assisting Spain GP in Montmelo was very special, being with Asturians and (I don´t know why) some bunch of Finnish people in pelousse of Campsa turn. It was fantasitic because you could find some or less the same people.

And I live near Madrid, and I will assist,  but the possibility for not well-off  people to see F1 in Madrid will be low.
