I am anti-Sainz and pro-Tsunoda that needs to be factored in.

The important thing is seeing both drivers up to speed and performing well. Bodes well for the future.

So far, his race was a better one, showing glimpses of his previous form. Nevertheless, shout out to Albon, which was able to claw back the Qualy deficit and be right on Sainz's gearbox.
Overall, I would say encouraging. But also slightly worrying that Alpine were able to run us strong, with their end-of-shelf-life engine.

What Beri is getting at is Albon should bot have been 15th to begin with.
You have to make your own destiny.
Then it wouldn’t have been Albon but whoever else was 15th that should have got to Q2.
It’s not that Albon was shafted. It’s that whoever was 15th was shafted.

Yes. And then we wouldnt have had this discussion in the Williams Thread. Meaning; Albon should have done better. Simple as that.

Albon was clearly slower than he should've been in Q1, putting himself at risk.
That said, in the race he was slightly quicker than Sainz and made more out of the harder tyres than others. The SC slightly hurt him as he was coming at the others ahead with a tyre offset.

Nope I stand corrected, no penalty accordint to final standings
Always a breeze to see you admit your mistakes 😉
Anywho, happily Sainz has no penalty. Because it seemed all weekend that he gained momentum and with that; speed. His race craft was on par and what to be expected of him. Albeit sometimes a bit over the edge (Antonella for instance).
Let's hope he can bring that to Jeddah too.

It is good if Sainz has managed to turn the corner as Williams will need 2 strong drivers to compete for 5th, which I still think may be a stretch.

Article on Sainz's driving style highlighting one of the FW47's limitations. Feedback from Albon too.

Hopefully the engineers tackle this for 2026.

I think Sainz is one of the hardest working F1 drivers in the field, but isn't the strength of the best drivers to adapt & drive around a car's limits?

It should be in theory but I don't think even there's a driver out there than can drive around any trouble there might be. We've seen even the very best drivers in the history of the sport having inexcplicable lack of pace on certain occasions. I suspect that sometimes a factor that makes or breaks an F1 career is luck whether the exact car that you get to drive during a crucial point of your career has issues that you can drive around well or not so well.

That's what he's doing now. Apparently they can't change the car to fix the limitation without a thorough rethink. They'll get that chance next year.

Good FP1.
Hopefully both cars have the pace for points. Just need a clean weekend. Hard to do in the midfield.

Carlos slightly faster again, did Alex mistime his last run?
It was a gamble. The crash was just mistimed.
I think he wanted clear air/zero traffic as he set an early time in both Q2 runs.
Great timing by Sainz in Q3. P6 should give him some confidence.

He was often doing that in previous years as well.
I don't think it's the best strategy when the field is so close. Even if the circuit "improves" by half a tenth, it can often make a difference. When you're in a Williams, you should optimise for the best possible run in Q2, not for a "safe" run.

generally I agree, but today the car was fast enough. Problem was not so much the improving track, but that Albon lost 2 tenths in the final corner.

Albon lost Q3 by 0.007 seconds. I think it's pretty likely an identical lap in terms of driving quality set a few minutes later would've been more than 0.007 seconds faster. You don't always nail your lap perfectly. You should take the best track conditions possible unless you have several tenths of a margin of error IMO.

yeah, that's true as well. The time loss on the straight before is probably mainly from not having a tow at all

Just one observaton- we've had 6 qualifying sessions this year including 1 sprint and the smallest gap between the Williams drivers was 3 places. It's becoming an annoying pattern that the team is never able to optimise the qualifying result for both drivers.

Meh, could be Haas. Want to talk about wild swings.
Williams is doing about as well as you could ask for being borderline Q3. One of the two is likely to be caught out unfortunately.

The difference now is we have a back up 2 car team rather than putting all the pressure on Albon.
