THE ATLASF1 GRANT TURISMO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

RACE #2: THE LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY GRAND PRIX

DESIGNATED CAR: MITSUBISHI GT3000 VR-4

The second round of the championship takes place at the famous Laguna Seca raceway. With its mix of fast straights and sweeping corners, with a couple of tight turns (including the infamous cork-screw), Laguna Seca is often a challenging proposition for drivers. It also has plenty of elevation changes, which will test your ability to keep the car stable under braking.

As we discovered after the first round, things are close. Very close in fact. There are some excellent driver amongst us, and I’m sure most of you will agree that the championship is at times far more exciting than the real thing (Go Schuey go).

1000hp. Say it again. Slowly. This weeks vehicle, the Mitsubishi GT3000 VR-4, is capable of over 1000hp. That’s a lot. That’s more than either the Ferrari or BMW V10’s in this years Formula1 cars. It’s a hell of a lot more than the Illmor/Mercedes in the back of the McLaren. And I’m not even going to talk about Honda…
As many of you have discovered, the GT3000 is an understeering pig-dog of a vehicle. It’s straight-line speed however, is impressive. Your ability to tune the handling of the car to handle the unique challenges of Laguna Seca is going to be put to the test.

With the championship now moving into a week-on/week-off schedule, the car for the next Grand Prix will be announced at the conclusion of this weeks racing.

There are several notes that will accompany this announcement in a further post, so be sure to check those out.

Have fun, and Good Luck!!

TEAMS

Well, it is apparent to everyone that some people are "here", and some people are not.

So this is how its going to work.

JohnE IS here. He posted a time for round1, and he assures me he will be here for the remainder of the championship. So, as the first "independent", he slots into the first vacant place, that of GSPOTWIZARD, who hasn't replied to anyones messages. So, Iconic and Ozf1, please make JohnE welcome into your as-yet unnamed TEAM-5

This leaves new-comer Chrissy Boy still out in the cold. Our other no-show for round1 was Garagiste, but he will be back for round two. Chrissy Boy will be first in line to slip into any vacant slots that appear. Right? Sorted  :smoking:

SCREENSHOTS

Don't forget the "random-screenshot" policy put into place by the JFIA. DON"T WORRY ABOUT IT. It will all be done by PM, so you don't need to worry unless I PM you requesting one. Kinda like an IRS audit like they have in the states  So I don't wanna hear an whinging about "i cant post one...blah blah blah". We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

As you may or may not have heard, AtlasF1 member Moog101 was killed in a motorcycle accident recently. I think it would be a nice gesture if we named the "trophy" for the AtlasF1 GT3 Drivers Championship the David Freeman memorial trophy. Its not much, to be sure, and I don't even know if he played playstation, or even liked games, but I feel that I need to do something. i hope no one objects, but feel free to. Ill ask EM if its cool first anyway...

Enjoy your racing :)

JForce, I think it is a great idea and a nice gesture to name the trophy after David Freeman. And yes he did play GT3 on his PS2.

About our team (#4) and our 1st round....did we get only 2 times recorded (Viktor and I)? and was there 5 seconds added to the it for the average or what?

I really hope Garagiste really makes it quickly, but i wont be able to play the game much all this week cuz i have my 3 I/S bosses over from Europe and im the only 1 here that represents the I/S department, which means that u wont see much of me.

Last round everybody posted them here. My first time is 1'18.706. So I guess this means that a decent time is going to be 1'13.000....

Big up to my main man JForce for naming the trophy.

I haven't even started, but I'll state right now that this is a waste of a good track with a very bad car. I know you said the cars were random, but I'm not going to compete a championship with monster cars like this. From here on, we must have horsepower limits, and we must drive good cars, not 2600kg pieces of shite.

You have a good thing going JForce, don't nose dive it.

Actually it's 1428 kg of shite, but I agree the car sucks big time. We all have to drive the same car on the same track. So we would be compeating on very mutch the same grounds.

Just look at it as a challenge.

I was looking forward to a good battle between us.

Cheer up

Sad, sad that someone chooses a 1000 horsepower, no handling, 1400kg car to race around the technically demanding Laguna Seca track. That doesn't qualify as challenging your skill, that qualifies as being an idiot (No offence JForce) in the first place to even attempt the combination of racing a car that is meant for the test track. I thought you said we wouldn't be racing the 'Escudo'?

A solution to this problem would be to have poll.

Say you, JForce, pick 5 cars randomly and we would have to choose a car to race.

I think the horsepower limit is a bad idea as it would be hard to control.

I suggested the poll a while ago. IMO, even though I said it would be difficult to control the HP. It ruins the game, you could have a perfectly fun JGTC car at it's normal 450 HP, ruined by the rules allowing the car to be plus 1000 HP. It doesn't make the car fun. After this round, If no HP limits are installed, and better way of deciding which cars to use; I will boycott the rest of the championship.

Know what, I've just spent an hour going around this track and the fastest I could go was 1'18.652. Quite frankly I've had enough. There is no skill to this car and track, the fastest way around is to bounce off of the walls. Driving style is non-existant. This does not test my skills, this insults them. Right now I am considering boycotting this round itself. I'm making a post right now seeing what everyone else in the championships wants.

1'16.649 quite easily after making the car virtually FR. No bouncing from the walls at all. Maybe it will be needed in 1'14's.

Remeber where you drive. What I mean there are no one who tells you wich tires you may use, check if you are using supersoft tires, I didnt in the start and changed and cut of 1.5 sec on the first run.

Also it took a while to figure how to drive the car around the track. I like to brake late as hell and hope the car sticks on the track, but to my disepointment it didnt. Have to brake early and get the car in a good line in the corners and just feed on with power on the way out.

I thought I drove realy bad when I took it easy around the track, but the time was better. So I just kept on trying to drive faster and faster.

If I had tied togheter all the sector times found in the Graph selection in free run, I would have a time under 1:14.00, think it was 1:13.980.
This Graph option is quite usefull because of the camera view, you can see where you go wide and other mistakes you have done.

And trust me it would not go faster it you hit of the walls.

Even though I'm current at mid-1'18 my best times on all three sectors would be mid-1'16 and I'm sure there's more to come without bouncing off the walls.

If it is true that you can only set a really fast time by "bouncing off the walls" that would suck, however
based on the last race I expect to be at least a second or two off the pace of the best, so I assume a 1'14.xxx is perfectly feasible driving normally.

I have to say that I have no problems driving the GTO. I've shifted 70% of power to the rear and I'm having a good time poodling 'round laguna seca. I'd rather keep the GTO for this round, but for the future we could create a pool of 20-odd cars that everyone deems acceptable and let JForce match cars and circuits.

Why not select cars that will only tune to 400-odd hp then. Like the Type-R Integra ?

The 3000GT is an unfortunate choice as it is one of relatively few cars that can have a stage-4 turbo installed on it, thereby almost ensuring >1000bhp.

There are plenty of cars that have a more modest maximum. Try the Vertigo. That only goes to 700-odd yet it's one of the best handling cars in the game that I've come across so far.

Maybe, as the guys suggested, we should stop the random car selection and start going for cars that will mean we all enjoy the rounds more.
