Apologies for bumping this thread. Just wondered if there was any more progress on the "warts and all" Stanley biography?

I've not heard anything regarding it recently from the chap in question, so I'll enquire.

I did, and there's no progress to report I'm afraid.

With regard to Mr. Stanley, I have wondered how he was regarded by his brother in law, Mr. Owen...

While BRM's success in the early 60's can be attributed to Mr. Stanley's advocacy of Tony Rudd, Mr. Stanely also deserves equal blame for BRM's demise in the 70's. Just as an observer of what happened out in the open, it is obvious that many bad business decisions were made. What went on behind closed doors must have been shocking.

Best,

Ross

Gee !! I looked at this thread and thought, "Hey !! Louis has come back to life and managed to die all over again!!" ..... but like Francisco Franco, he remains deceased !!

What next, the "Dead Parrot sketch?"

Big Louie was so devious I wouldn't have put it past him to pull off a Reggie Perrin type stunt.

I would guess that Alfred Owen might have thought Louis Stanley an improvement on his sister's first husband, a clergyman whom she divorced on grounds of cruelty. The judge's opinion, "He is not, and never was, fit to hold holy office. He is a sex maniac and the quicker he is out of the Church the better."

Reading this thread makes me wonder though. What on earth did Big Lou do that was so shocking and unsavoury? Perhaps the mystery author failed to substantiate the stories and that is why the book is on hold? A bit unfair on Mr Stanley if that is the case.

I will admit to sharing these same thoughts as I read this thread. More of what now passes as "journalism" or simply more swill for our seemingly endless and relentless appetite for gossip and the parallel fascination for "knowing" the worse about people? Certainly there must be, as Dennis Hockenbury states, many far more worthy subjects that need to be researched and written about than this?

Hi Don.

No, this is not in any way, shape or form sensationalism. A [exteremely] close relative approached one of motor sport's most respected authors and journos and spewed out his tale, angered by the mass fawning in the aftermath of his demise.

And, from what was relayed to me via said author, he had damn good reason. Shocking doesn't even come close...

Oh, My. Well, I guess we shall eventually see what we shall see and see if it was worth all the suspense and mystery.

There's no intent on my part to create any 'suspense and mystery'; it's merely a case of me being unwilling to divulge any identities.

Interesting that the poster who so disapproves of people's "relentless appetite for gossip and knowing the worst about people" is unwilling to divulge his own identity....

Regarding Louis Stanley, he was known to proposition boys and young men for homosexual
activities. Attempts to keep this quiet were only partially successful.

I think you mean Raymond Mays. I also think this doesn't add much to the thread.

You are correct, Raymond Mays. My memories of 1970s racing failed me. In any case,
my post was entered as an effort to put an end to the endless drivel of this thread.
If someone can definitively answer the matter of Louis Stanley's alleged indiscretions,
let us then move on to discussing motorsport.

Could of course be included within one of DCN's eagerly awaited future volumes... :rotfl:

Methinks not, but what a great fantasy!
