To help revive this thread here's a delightful image of Helen and Jackie and Alan, perhaps at Brands in the early 70s'. The image belongs to John Sismey.

I believe all but the first of John-w's photos date from 1980, not 1979. The Lotus 81 on the breakdown wagon is definitely from 1980, and the McLaren M29 used a slightly different colour scheme in 1979.
Sorry, I forgot to add the text Hockenheim 1980

The driver (Koveleski) in that last shot appears to have an aerofoil on his helmet ! He wasn't serious, was he?

Maybe he thought his neck needed to be shorter? Although you don't need a long neck to be a goose...

Oscar was never one to take himself too seriously. The wing on his helmet was a dig at the Mighty McLarens.

Here's a batch of images I've just come across in the archive (i.e. while rooting around in the loft) - taken by local photographer Pierre Vitoux at Nivelles in 1972 and 1974...

I hadn't realised just how uphill the final hairpin was, until I saw this last shot.

To me the dispiriting sight of Nivelles - 'replacing' the majesty of Spa-Francorchamps - was truly shocking. It was the thin end of the wedge which heralded the desolation of most Tilke circuits, and their ilk, today. Great racing requires a great stage on which to strut, to show off truly talented sportsmen competing at a level that normal mortals could never dare approach...
Mind you - I expect the same could have been said of Miramas, or indeed of Brooklands, way back before the old king died.

Fascinating. Thanks John!
I've always wondered if it could have become a more likeable circuit given time. The poor opinions and criticism when it first opened - primarily because of the move away from Spa of course - probably gave it very little chance. And then of course the owners ran into financial difficulty and the rest is history.
Oddly enough I looked for evidence of the circuit recently (in absolutely torrential rain) and you can just about make out a few sections, but it's an industrial estate now, which has been established for quite some time. The uphill straight in John's last picture is curious though!
Also of course the little Zolder circuit near Hasselt was beginning to flourish, although I've never quite made my mind up about that place. I had a look round there on the same trip - a midweek motor bike practice day, fascinating in itself - but I'm still unsure. Well, there's always Spa-Francorchamps, even in it's modern form I suppose . . .

What exactly is the 3rd picture in the series showing us. The helmet and face strongly suggest Clay Regazzoni, but the name written on the side of the cockpit looks more like Mario Andretti. Besides Clay is featured in some more pictures in the car he drove in '72, number (30) and the name on th cockpit there is very different. All capitals and further forward.
According to my notes, Ferrari had entered 3 cars, (29) for Ickx and (30) for Regazzoni and (31) for Andretti (DNA). They were there with 3 cars (312B2), one of them used as spare for Ickx.
Checking Chassis numbers over the season does not make me much wiser, because none of the drivers seems to have a particular favourite car.

Thanks for the explanation. That's what I figured out myself, but then I couldn't believe it was that simple.
So a few more extra remarks into my database.

Seems to be the "M8FT" that I last saw Willie Green racing in Supersports circa 1989. Is it still around in this configuration?

sabrejet, I saw Willie Green race this car too at Donington. I believe it belonged then to Charlie Agg.
