Bit of an update: I'm a board member now of Les Amis de Gabriel Voisin and I will be the whole weekend at Epoq'Auto in Lyon this year.

For European Heritage Days I'm hosting a prewar car display at my place in the Loire Valley in September.

Next year we are trying to setup a veteran car run.

I still organise my monthly classic car meet since 2016 and I'm launching a monthly classic motobike meet next january...

2023 is the third year I'm organising a classic caravan meet at my place, we had 11 of them and 15 cars two weeks ago.

Good day to all.

After having been away for about 10 years from this forum, due to several reasons, I have made me a new account because I could not possibly remember what my old account used to be.

Well, my name is Erwin and I live in The Netherlands, have reached the age of half a century this year and I have a great interest in not only Formula 1 but also Grand Prix racing as a whole. My interests go all the way back to 1919.

I watch Formula 1 every race, have done so since Monaco 1999 and have been a fan ever since. I always like to know about the history of the sport, so I do a lot of research and so, although I cannot always find what I am looking for. That's what brought me back to this great forum.

Well, if anyone has any questions, let me know. I'm at the Nostalgia forum.  :stoned:  :stoned:

Kind regards,

Erwin

Small world, I've met a former TNFer, from AtlasF1 days, in Lyon last November at a dinner of the Patrimoine & Histoire de l'Automobile en France association.

If someone happens to often be in the Loire Valley, I'm organising a veteran car (pre-1905) run mid 2025. Alas my oldest car dates from 1913 but my Delâge will suit its role as a relativly quick staff car.

I often see Louis Delâge great-grand-son at my events, he certainly has great knowledge on prewar clasics but, alas, not many family archives.

My name is Lambert and I have been passionate about motorsport since 2006. I also play racing simulators(Arcade racing games too), although I am never good at racesims and I don't have a better steering wheel.
But I don't worry about it too much because I play mainly as a hobby rather than seriously ;)

Favorite drivers all of the time Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna, Richard Petty
Favorite racing cars, Tyrrell P34, Mclaren F1 GTR, Ferrari F40 GTE
Favorite tracks, Monza, Interlagos, Monaco, Instambul Park, Wroclaw( :rotfl: fictional track for Rfactor1)

Twenty-Four years later and this thread is still going strong, that's really amazing. I have not really done anything motor related for a while though I did just buy a used book on Denny Hulme. Mostly been travelling having just got back from a short respite in Puerto Vallarta and before that spent some time in Austria, Germany, Switzerland. France, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and the Czech Republic. Not to mention China, and Vietnam. Travelling to races now is just too exhausting so now I stick to the television. I hope everyone is well.

To introduce myself...

My name is David Salt.

My interests cover all aspects of motor racing history from the 1930s to the 1950s.

I am particularly passionate about Jaguar, and, back in the day, I owned an XK120.

I was a member of TNF some 12-15 years ago, when it was in its heyday.

I look forward to exchanging information with like-minded enthusiasts.

David

Hi everyone. My name is Chris, and I'm a race fan and novice historian (emphasis on the word novice) from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My dad was bitten by the racing bug back in 1962, when at 12 years of age he was taken to the Rex Mays Classic at the Milwaukee Mile. His goal from that point on was to get himself to the Indy 500, which he did in 1967. He has not missed one since. He took me for the first time in 1983 when I was six. I also have not missed one since. As long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with racing history. In fact, I sometimes think I almost like the historical aspect more than I do what's going on right now. IndyCar (especially the 500) is my main interest, but F1, sports cars, and NASCAR are not far behind.

One aspect of racing history that has always fascinated me is the cars themselves. I love how every chassis tells a story. It rolls out of the factory brand new and then begins a life of ups and downs and if it's lucky, it ends up in a museum or a collection.

As an example, look at the history of the first Hawk that Clint Brawner built in 1965. It saw success with Mario Andretti in 1965 and 1966 and then was updated in 1967, serving as Mario's backup car (as well as being used on road circuits). It was sold to Memphis based airplane salesman Jack Adams, who entered the car for Jim McElreath in 1969. It came back to Indy in 1970, and was qualified by Rick Muther. Chief mechanic Howard Millican then rebodied the car another time and Muther put the car into the race in 1971. It then sat unused until it was turned into a Super modified, suffering a bad accident in 1973 which resulted in the car being essentially destroyed. The remains somehow survived until 2014, when they were purchased by Ray Evernham. Evernham also purchased a Hawk replica that had been built by Clint Brawner's nephew. the frame of the original Hawk was rebuilt and then the whole chassis was built up using parts from the replica (some of which were original parts from Clint's shop). Through all the twists and turns, Mario Andretti's 1965 Hawk survives to this day.

Anyway, I love this stuff and I look forward to discussing with you all.

Originally introduced myself back in March 2003, so over 20 years ago, was an avid poster back then but not much in recent years, I think helping run a smaller FIA race series for a number of years took more out of me than I imagined and I dropped off motorsport for a while, I still dropped in here for the book thread at times but that was mostly it.

Still working in the car industry, have been through a Japanese and UK company in the 20 years and now with a different UK company with F1 links which has got me interested in F1 again which has got me back on the site.

No interesting car at home currently as have them at work, but that will hopefully change next year.

I still tweek my old google earth circuits file occasionally although it’s not actually hosted anywhere currently, perhaps need to get it online again.

Still buying lots of books, 30’s and 60’s still my favourite era’s but also now the 90’s and pre qualifying as it was the era I was watching F1 the most.

Nice to be back on TNF.

Greetings!

Turns out I was an active member some time ago. Not sure why I disappeared, but here I am.

My name is Robert. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. I have been an auto racing history enthusiast for most of my adult life.

I am an artist and graphic designer, and since I have no actual old race car (I had a 29 Ford for many years when I was younger.) I now spend time researching and drawing them.

My interests lay in pre-WWI auto and motorcycle racing. I especially enjoy automotive history that may have a Utah connection.

I love the history of land speed racing on Utah salt. I head to Bonneville every year and attend the racing events that happen there, with camera in hand.

I also have deep interest (my wife would call it an obsession) with early transcontinental motoring adventures especially the 1908 New York-Paris race, specifically the portion of the race through the western U.S. I'm not retired quite yet, but when I do, I plan on finishing a book I started writing about a decade ago, about NY-P in the west. I will be illustrating it as well.

I have an extensive automotive library which I add to whenever I can.

So, there you go.

Well, Robert, you must have seen the Montana Dodge Boys in action with their Fast Four roadster...

Good fun guys who took to the salt for a bet and just kept going faster.

Haha, Little Chris, No, my musical career began and thankfully ended with a rendition of The Dambusters March performed on a Descant Recorder!

But that was many moons ago, as was my first encounter with Motor Racing, a race won by Parnell, with Chiron 2nd, followed by Mays, Ashmore, Louveau, Johnson et al also featuring Levegh, Bolster, Gerard, Bira, Sommer, Abecassis and Billy Cotton ( who was a musician!!).

But I remember very little as I was only 4 years old, apart from seeing the many scaffolding poles used building the grandstand at the West Park hairpin. The Jersey International Road Race was held  just 2 years after the Liberation of the island, held on a Thursday as that was Early Closing Day. ( And I notice it has featured on TNF about 20 years ago with contributions from among others, Richard Jenkins.) If you google it there are many pics and even movies. Motor Sport Magasine even sent a reporter, and they all seemed to get mightily p*ssed at the end of proceedings.

The 917 was at the Autumn Classic meeting at Castle Combe some years back, and that delightful meeting is being held again in 2 weeks time.

I roamed hither and thither chasing after racing cars, the 60s and 70s mainly, and although i still follow Effwon it's all a completely different kettle of fish now. C'est la vie.

I'm off to Roscoff in Brittany next week, where I may partake of a few moules frites and imbibe some Calvados.

My first Grand Prix was the '62 French at Rouen-les Essarts.

I have a few snaps from the mid-sixties which  may be of interest and hope to post some eventually.

I got good advice from Tim Murray regarding how to post pics, but had to post twice and tho' the 2 posts showed up it was some time before the images appeared. (wonder why that was).

Peter.

P.S. I meant to title that post 'Rhapsody in Blue'.

P.P.S. i now live in Bath.

yes indeed, Ray..

As Wordsworth said at his first Grand Prix (The Grasmere GP 1778)..

"Bliss it was that dawn to be alive...."

or Dylan..

"But I was so much older then, I'm younger than that that now.."

Luckily we Had DSJ as our wordsmith.

And one singer sang he was left, "peaceful, warm and tired... what more could I ask, there's nothing left to be desired."

Not a relevant comparison?

If anyone is interested, I'm organising a pre-1905 run with 24 cars, fourth weekend of May 2025 in the Loire Valley area.

We wouldn't mind some extra volunteers to help us cater the drivers!

In other news, I have been in touch with MB archives in Stuttgart. They found a 1920 letter from Th. Pilette writting about being glad to become soona Mercedes agent again.
