AUSTRALIAN DRIVERS
CESARIO Lucio

Even though Lucio did most of his driving in Australia, I'm told when he raced at Le Mans in 1985 for Lancia he raced under the Italian flag (at least that was what was painted on the car). Will see if I can find a picture.

Doreen Evans: according to John Bullock's book "Fast Women", Doreen was 17 when she started racing in 1933. She died as Doreen Phillips in California in April 1982, aged 65. I'll leave the details to the genealogy experts ;)

Can anyone provide the year(s), co-driver, etc. for Bob Harmon (United States)?

I have somewhat sorted out the Erickson situation (still no dates for Ernie), but think I will post that to it's own thread.

Actually the name of her husband was Phipps (as you told us here).

Apparently there was at least one daughter from that marriage (source).

Since her husband (b. 03 Oct 1912, d. 15 Sep 1997) died in Denver, Colorado, maybe they had been divorced?

SSDI comes up with only two women called Doreen who were born in 1916 and died in April 1982, both of them in California, but neither of them named Phipps (or Phillips). One is Doreen Knudsen (b. 15 Aug 1916, last residence: San Francisco) and the other one is Doreen Boyer (b. 04 Jun 1916, last residence: San Diego, but SSN issued in Colorado).

Maybe Doreen Evans (div. Phipps) remarried to one Mr. Boyer. If Doreen Evans was in fact born on 04 Jun 1916 she would have shared her birthday with her brother Kenneth who was born on that very day four years earlier.

Thanks, Nanni, for spotting that typo. Haine Kane had the right year in his database but I transcribed it incorrectly.

 Brain fade ....

But looking at it again, perhaps she died in Colorado, not California? Phipps' father was a Colorado senator after all. To move to California seems unlikely, though admittedly not impossible. And Bullock's text says they "lived happily there for more than 40 years", so a divorce seems equally improbable.

Thank you ReWind...

Ok, Haine, the info you have for Bob Harmon is clearly a different man. The Bob Harmon that Richie provided you the dates for (the correct dates, I might add) is Bob Harmon, race promoter and founder of the All Pro circuit for Stock Cars, father of stock car racer Mike Harmon.

I'm going to start a new thread on the Ericksons, please check it for more information and clarification.

H. de Fierlant, born 10 Dec 1942 (Fieux).

I must admit I don't know where is Fieux ! It's possibly a misprint.

I've just realize that Honoré Wagner never took part in Le Mans 24 Hours.

I knew that Koob was born that day (26 July 1930) and that he was Bettborner (living at Bettborn).

About de Fierlant (again)
He was born at FREUX, postcode = 6800, near Libramont in the Ardennes. So fieux was a misprint.

Bekaert was definitely British
De Vroom's cars were often US-owned, though for some reason I have a feeling he was from one of the Latin America countries. Can't be more specific, sorry

My thanks to KJJ who posted

"BRINGHAM-METCHIN H.B. - This is going to be BRDC member Hylton Paul B. Metchim born in London 3rd March 1908, better known as Charles Metchim. He wrote an article for the Boys Own Paper in 1937 entitled "Behind the Scenes at Le Mans" Lived in Kenya after the war".

I am writing to correct the error in the name of my distant cousin - he was not called "Bringham-Metchim H B" - and to provide an update about his last years.

My cousin's correct name was "Hylton Paul Bridgman Metchim". As KKJ posted, he was born on 3rd March 1908. He died on 30th January 1976. His death was reported in the London Gazette and he was listed as living at 31 Richmond Court, Richmond, Surrey at the time of his death. He was formerly living in Tenerife and his profession was listed as farming consultant (retired). The London Gazette link is:

http://www.gazettes-...least=&similar=

I came across my cousin is researching my family tree. If anyone knows any other information about Hylton Paul Bridgman Metchim, better known as Charles Metchim, eg did he marry and did he have any children, please let me know.

I think that would be very difficult considering they haven't found him yet.

Although his wife is seeking to have him declared legally dead.

@Haine Kane: Many thanks for those dates. Just wonderful.

But [nit-picking mode on] there are some mis-spellings which should be corrected:
Fassler, Marcel in fact is Marcel Fässler.
Krucher, Jean in fact is Jean Krucker.
Mueller, Herbert in fact is Herbert Müller.
Seiler, Tony in fact is Toni Seiler.
Straehl, Eugen in fact is Eugen Strähl.
Voegele, Charles in fact is Charles Vögele.
Walter, Hans Joachim (b. 1927) in fact is Heinrich Walter, usually called „Heini“. (Hans-Joachim Walter [1929 - 1988] was a German driver [European Rally Champion 1961].)[nit-picking mode off]

I would like to know whether the following ones are the correct spellings:
Loewe, Herbert – also possible: Löwe
Schaefer, Armand – also possible [and found elsewhere that way]: Schäfer, Schaeffer
Schafer, Georges – also possible: Schäfer

What puzzles me are the life dates of Rico Steinemann: In his short obituary in „Motorsport aktuell“ from 17 June 2003 it was stated that he died four days before his 64th birthday. At the moment I cannot locate my source for his dying date. Since I noted it as 10 Jun 2003 I concluded that he was born on 14 Jun 1939.

Now it is said he was born on 16 Jun 1939 and died on 12 Jun 2003 which also fits with the gap of four days. So my question is: Has someone a bullet-proof date of death for Rico Steinemann?

I just found a small clue about the birth date of Danish driver Jens Winther (whose full name - I think - is Jens Winther Nielsen).

In 1986 German monthly "rallye racing" announced his forthcoming retirement and mentioned that he would turn 48 on Christmas that year.

Alas, that's not totally clear because it leaves at least three options regarding the exact date (24 Dec, 25 Dec, or 26 Dec). But if that piece of info is correct it means he was born in 1938.

Voegele, Charles in fact is Charles Vögele.

This is correct, only Charles himself used also sometimes Voegele; I have to find some pictures with his name on the racecars. I’m not sure but think hi used the “Charles Voegele Team” variant.

That should be George J. Viola who used "George Rice" as a pseudonym.

From the Social Security Death Index I have the following dates: born 22 February 1914, died 26 February 2003.

(Remark: Respected author G.E. White has other dates [01 Feb 1914 - 10 Dec 1987] which IMHO are not the correct ones.)

George Rice raced at Le Mans? Just out of curiosity, but when was that?

Reinhard, where is your George Viola born, and where did he die? I think it's quite unlikely that Gordon White should have wrong dates, especially for his death, since George Rice was quite a popular figure in US short track racing.

This is Gordon's George Viola:-
George Rice was born George Viola, on Feb. 1, 1914 in Milford, Connecticut. He was the son of Italian immigrants, Joseph and Rose Viola. Joseph was a blacksmith. George had a younger brother, John, born in September, 1917.

George took the racing name "Rice" when he began driving big cars at Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1932. In 1934 he began racing in the old ARA circuit at Crossbay Speedway, Long Island. He drove a rocker-arm
Riley at Huntington and Cherry Park, Connecticut and switched to midgets in 1936.

He and Johnny worked days at Page Brothers Chevrolet in Milford, Connecticut.

His first midget was a J.A.P. cycle, but when parts became hard to get he switched to the Slim Schroeder Carlheim, then to Eddie Bourgnon's Harley. He won the indoor title in 1940 at the Bronx Coliseum. In 1941 he drove the Roy Hagedorn # 9 Carlheim. In his last pre-war race he ran over a car driven by Herbie Heldt and went end-for-end, washing out the Bourgnon car, but received only bruises.

He joined the Navy and served as a chief petty officer on an LST in the Pacific.

After the war he drove for Frank Curtis in the Curtis # 5 and # 8 Kurtis-Kraft Offys, winning the ARDC title in 1947.

George died in Fairfield, Connecticut, December 10, 1987.

That is backed up by the SSDI - http://search.ancest...si=0&gss=angs-b

Reinhard's is at the top - this fellow died in Florida, but was also from Connecticut.

But where Reinhard may be coming from is - has Gordon fitted the dates around the man?

This is George Viola's Connecticut Death Index entry - http://search.ancest...si=0&gss=angs-b

which 1) Says he was born in New York, 2) died in Danbury, Connecticut, and c) worked in the electronic component industry http://search.ancest...7947&recoff=1 2

Hmm.. our man? Probably not.

And then, crucially - George James Viola - son of Joseph & Rosalie - http://search.ancest...=angs-b&srchb=t is the one that died in Florida - but was actually born in 1913.

Whilst Gordon's reputation is excellent, I must admit Reinhard's dates fit with the correct man. Gordon has the right man & description, but not the right dates.

Lucio is living in Melbourne /Aust.where he runs a Motorscooter dealership along with his automotive wholesale business, yep !! dealing mainly in European cars...he did 'proudly' drive for his birthright 'Italy' ,his first 'stint' in the Lancia/Ferrari (engine!!) was the 'late night/early morning' shift, first time at speed and in the 'dark'..he tell's a great story how when the sun came up he could see the cnr 'apexs' better and found a 'couple seconds 'a lap improvement to his lap times, reason Lucio never went on with the his European drive was that Lancia pulled out of Le Mans over the engine supply contract, but held its drivers under contract for the following season,so, Lucio returned to assist his family with thier European car service/sales centre operating in Melbourne..he's still the best hand brake 'U-Turn' operator in a Ferrari at 80kph that i've ever had the pleasrure off driving with ,'Cops' still think they saw two Ferrari's that night !!!!

There is this Wikipedia article whose author claims to be the daughter of George Viola aka Rice!
She says he was born on 22 February 1913.

Strangely the SSDI also has February 22nd as birth day, but in 1914!

Having a look at Richie's last link there are both years, too!

Unfortunately Gordon Eliot White posted on TNF only once and hasn't been seen ever since. :
