1/43 - All about car model collecting

Some years earlier though my very first metal kit was in fact F.D.S. No:35 which was the 1976 Ferraro 312T2 which I bought at the model shop at Brands Hatch during the British Grand Prix weekend that year and I remember thinking £5.00 was a lot to pay for a very basic kit.
I found the model yesterday buried in my pile of boxes and thought it might be of interest to 1/43 collectors on TNF.
I've photographed it alongside Tameo's Williams FW15C No:TMK 167 which I built 17 years later, this illustrates the advances in the white metal kit market during that time. The Ferrari is a very crude kit and it doesn't help that I painted it free hand with Humbrol tinlet paints as opposed to masking and spraying the Williams...
It is a shame that Grand Prix Models has moved from St Albans, even though it was a 60 mile round trip from home I used to enjoy visiting the shop most Saturdays to buy my next kit.

I also have a few FDSs in my collection from that time, tey are: Ferrari 365 P, #116; Ferrari 308 turbo Gr. 5 #621; Porsche 911 Carrera RSR turbo #609 and Porsche 935/76 Kremer K2–Vaillant #52 (you can see them in the marque’s folder in my Windows’ Life photo album at http://cid-0b28de878...../1-43 Models). They were reasonably good for the time, but crude per today’s standards. As a note I did not pay £5.00 but around $20 Canadian (which at the time was about £10.00) so you had a good deal.
Concerning the Ferrari 312T2 I have one made by Fabbri (#27 of the Fabbri Ferrari collection), that you can also see in the album above or in one of my blogs, the “Ferrari F1 1949-2000” at http://143ferrarif1.blogspot.com/
Just as a final note I presume that the St. Albans that you talk about is in UK not New England USA.

I am in the UK and St. Albans is in Hertfordshire.
Regarding the price of the FDS kit, I have a vague memory (not sure how accurate) that £5.00 could have bought me a 1/12th scale Tamiya back in 1976

Finally I finished one of my ongoing projects. Some time ago I bought a second FLY F003 Lola T70 Mk.2 with the purpose of transforming it into a Lola T70 Mk.3B (s/n: SL73/124) that was raced by Roger Penske in 1967.
Next picure shows the original car on the left and the Penske car on the right. The Sunoco decals on the front fenders are not representative of the real car, but when there is not available we must improvise, anyway is close enough...

Now, as I am almost certain to be moving house - to another country - I've got to put the thick end of 400 models back in their boxes.
Trust me, it takes a VERY LONG TIME!

I believe you because I moved 10 years ago with 800 and it was a real big job. Now I am up to the 1200 models and I do not intend to move (see the display in my living room, in the 1st post of page 1).Not having a huge amount of space to exhibit my 43rd scale collection I take them out of their boxes and line them up, two deep, on a series of shelves.
Now, as I am almost certain to be moving house - to another country - I've got to put the thick end of 400 models back in their boxes.
Trust me, it takes a VERY LONG TIME!
I wish you courage!!

If you feel any of them won't travel, I know a good home for them. Not having a huge amount of space to exhibit my 43rd scale collection I take them out of their boxes and line them up, two deep, on a series of shelves.

With somewhat fewer models than you I use "Picture Pride" glass fronted display cabinets. The main feature ofthe cabinets they do is that they have sloping shelves - it shows off the models far better, but, as I found to my cost, you have to use bits of fuse wire wrapped round the two uphill wheels to stop them sliding off the shelves. Thank heavens for 'Araldite'

I do not know what "Picture Pride glass" is! Is it the frosty ones?
About cabinets with sloping shelves, I agree that it shows off the models far better, but somehow the models have to be stopped from sliding off the shelves, and having them tied up by the rear wheels must be a nightmare for the anual cleaning.
Concerning surplus , yes I have a couple of hundred, that are either repeats or not fitting my collection themes.

Just pity the poor dealer who after a bad day at a fair has to rebox all those models in the shortest possible time... particularly after somewhere like Goodwood when they are bound to be thick with dust.

Just a question - Is it a 1/43 scale model?
If it is, it is pretty good!

I just finished this DAM resin kit of the Matra 660 that entered at Le Mans in 1970. I searched the net to find the position of the aileron in the back of the car but it was not conclusive. There were several pictures of a model that showed in the position that I ended up placing it but I still am not sure. Any comments / clarifications...

Hi Tonecas,I should think that only Minichamps have made this actual model. Last week I got given a brochure for Mecedes models, but this went in the recycling bin. They have a website too, Merc Models? Wish I had seen this question last weekend!

Can anyone explain, to a model collecting novice like myself, why the latest replicas cost so much to buy?
The recent Minichamps 1:43 models for example retail at almost £50 which is absurd. I recall that just three or four years ago they were much more affordable at almost half the price?
Are they now made from gold and woven unicorn hair?

Most model companies have their models made in China, and because China has been buying up most of the scrap metal in the world for the past several years the price has gone through the roof. One of the China factories has recently closed and at least three model companies lost the tooling for their models, I think Minichamps was one of them.
Edit, Just checked with a friend, the companies affected are Truescale, Biante and Schuco.

From what I understand, TRUESCALE wasn't as affected as BIANTE and SCHUCO. I also read that MINICHAMPS have cancelled 60 upcoming models.

We have seen something similar before in the early 90's, the names escape me (was it Quartzo and another company?) when they set out to produce every car on the F1 grid for every season. Pretty soon the economy turned around, people ran out of space on their shelves, and nobody could keep up with the latest releases anyway. Too many things to collect, built and sold on a tight budget, it has always been thus.
Steve
The name of the Company that was set out to produce every car on the F1 grid for every season was "Onyx" (I have a few) and it was also set to produce them at a very afordable prices. Quartzo was also started at the same time but focussed specificaly on Rally cars (I also have a few). Both companies were part of the group Vitesse with headquarters in Portugal before it was sold to the chinese.

And the ever-rising prices.

My current gripe. In the days when both Onyx and Minichamps modelled the field, it was possible for the family to buy me the new world champ's car for Christmas. Nowadays, Vettel's 2010 race car has just been issued and will no doubt be in my Christmas stocking but all that is available for 2011 is the show car, which is a 2010 or earlier car decked out in the 2011 livery. Presumably we will have to wait until the show car sells out before they will issue the race car.
And the ever-rising prices.
Happy Christmas none the less, Duncan.
(PS - a post like this would never be permitted in another sub-forum of which we wot - )

this Ferrari 641 model is a Tameo kit in 1:43rd scale, it's built by a professional builder in Asia and I added the 2 Ferrari driver figurines to give a little bit of a diorama feel. The white metal figurines are manufactured by Omen (painted by myself) and the driver decal is by MSM Creation that I got it from eBay. I then purchased a Rosso 1/43 Ferrari 641/2 plastic model and used the engine parts for this diorama, rounding out the whole thing, is the display label which I designed myself and created by my wife.
I hope you guys would like it - sorry about the lighting of these pictures, I wish I have a better camera.

I built the kit "out of the box" without any extra detailing which shows just how nice these kits are.
I bought a display box and sprayed the base in the colours of the Brazilan flag and painted a driver figure
which I think was from the Denizen range

do you still make 1/43 kits now David?
I was always a plastic kit maker until the early 1990s when I set out to build a model of each of the Lotus Grand Prix cars and it was only in 1/43 scale that this was possible.
I bought them all and built about 75% of them but then found myself buying some other 1/43 scale kits of certain cars that took my fancy, this distracted me from finishing the Lotus collection and by then I was drawn back to slot cars so to this day I have a pile of half finished and un-started 1/43 kits.
Here are a few of the kits I managed to finish.
Tameo Jordan 194
Tameo Ligier JS41
Tenariv Lola T70
SMTS Lotus 33
SMTS Lotus 49
SRC Lotus 78
SRC Lotus 79
Tameo Lotus 99
Perhaps in my retirement I will finally get back to the 1/43s if my eyes still allow me to work on such small models...
