A big thank you for all the information supplied by David, Milan and Bernd. If ever our sport is going to be fully documented it needs to be done sooner than later. I know of so much information that has been destroyed or is missing.

If you can keep it coming especially for the pre-1964 races that would be mighty useful. But give some people an inch and they'll want a mile! Do you have the race entries for the Waimate 50, the Renwick 50 and the Timaru Trophy races?

In passing, David, I have bought a copy of your 250F book and will buy any books by Milan and Bernd in the future!! Promise.

John

Don't forget to ask them for Australian Gold Star entry lists too. I would but I'm too shy.

Selected Gold Star events shouldn't be too hard, Allen... like the Farm, Caversham, Mallala, Longford (hmmm... perhaps?), Bathurst.

But others (Lowood, Gnoo Blas, Oran Park, Surfers, Lakeside, AIR...) I think might take some finding.

Even selected Gold Stars would be great. I may be the only one here actively working on Aussie Gold Star so - if nobody minds - may I suggest that from 1971 onwards would be my priority. I'm doing the 1971 series from RCN reports at the moment and entry lists (even one) would make life a lot easier. Was any other publication covering Gold Star in any depth in those days?

Mallala seemed to attact the real oddities (like the Cicada) so I'm glad you mention that one. Warwick Farm seems to have got some of the largest entries so that should give me a lot of what I need.

Many thanks

Allen

You'll readily see that most of the bigger names kept the same number throughout in that era...

The Sporting Car Club of South Australia will be sure to have copies of all Mallala programmes. Possibly AIR too, which will cover the period of your interest.

There is an interesting site on the Tasman Series between 1964 and 1969.

http://www.tasman-series.com

It is not complete, and hasn't any results for 1968 or 1969.

It does have reports and fields (including numbers) from the other years.

I'm currently working on the 68 & 69 reviews but it'll be a while yet.

McNamara?

Well, there's a nice recommendation for your site, Bernd!

M. McNamara from South Australia driving an Elfin Catalina.

Graysono is a typo. Max Grayson was driving an Elfin Mono.

Scan those 3 reports when you find time Ray, if I can find some bloody time I'll need em.

Yes, that's Alton Boddenberg from Gosford... raced a Valiant for a while then bought Leo Geoghegan's Lotus 32.

And in 1969, Col Green spelled his name like that... actually, I think that was the meeting I got a lift back to Sydney with his car. 1968 was the precious trip where that idiot Albert Jones blew a head gasket as I tried to sleep... I told him not to go past Violet town without stopping, as we pulled into Benalla I woke up and he told me we hadn't been through Violet Town!

I think the rims of his glasses were too thick!

At least the replacement gasket was cheap... it was a used one out of the local hearse...

Quick Question

Amon/Bell '69 who/what was their entrant in the NZ rounds?

**Edit** Also Rindts new chassis for Wigram (from memory R10) Should it be classified as a 49TB or 49B?

The Pukekohe, Wigram and Teretonga programmes list Amon's and Bell's entrant as "Ferrari Works". The Levin programme did not list entrants in those days
On the Lotus 49 matter, I have always listed the Tasman cars as 49s or 49Bs, as the 'T' suffix meant little more than the fact that the cars used a 2.5, rather than 3.0, engine (which we should be able to work out for ourselves!)

Many thanks David.
I had two sources one claiming Scuderia Ferrari and other C. Amon.

49B it is!

**Edit** Actually sorry to be a bother but is the Lotus entry 'World Wide Racing'? It was in OZ.

I guess that would be a very optimistic Malcolm Aldred?

The car would be an MRC, wouldn't it?

I'm sure Ray will straighten us out
But wasn't an MRC a Lotus copy rather than a modified Lotus?

I'm not entirely certain but from what I can gather it was a locally built extensively modified Lotus.

The name 'Rennmax' springs to mind...

It was the car he bought from Mr MRC himself, the well known purchaser of fine 'ready to be renamed' chassis from Bob Britton... Lionel Ayers. Even retained Lionel's striping pattern. But he was still an optimist...

I gather you're saying it was a Lotus copy (by Rennmax), not a modified Lotus?

That's right... all of Lionel's MRCs (Motor Racing Components) were Rennmaxes of some kind or another. He also had a Lotus 23 replica and a Rennmax sports car that he ran under that name.

Promise.

John

I have just been given a quite a few photo's of the NZ 1964 season including pictures from the Nov 1963 Renwick 50 race...this seems the most appropriate place to ask if anyone has a list of car numbers for this race? So far in my efforts to identify cars and drivers I have Palmer's Cooper T53 #41 and Shelly Lotus 18/21 #10. Gary Bremer's Jaguar D-type is also pretty easy to identify...of particular interest to me is what number did Andy Buchanan carry?

Thank you again David. That is an enormous help but there is one car that doesn't appear in that list but the picture seems to be taken in the Renwick pits...any idea? The licence plate in the nose is: 706.84?

Another thing is the Lotus rocker covers on what appears to be the Shelly Lotus Climax engine...was this normal or have I got the picture mixed up with another car/engine?

That's a Ford twin cam engine in that car... I don't think Shelly ever raced with one of those... I'd plump for old Roly with that. Or Young's Cooper or Histed's Lola... the chassis doesn't look very Lotus or Brabham.

Buchanan's Brabham had Lotus cam-covers on its engine

Can't help with your unidentified car - I never noted reg numbers until permanent plates came in (in 1964). Might it be a contestant in one of the other races? Are you able to post a scan?
