The Classic Touring Car Racing Club's Mallory Park Classic Festival on 18/19 June will feature the best of classic competition, from the host club's classic saloons to the Lansdowne classic 350 and 500cc GP motorcycles. The meeting will feature all the categories from the Classic Touring Car Racing Club portfolio, the inaugural Alfa Romeo Owners Club "On Track" event featuring races for this iconic marque and a Championship sprint meeting.

The Classic Touring Car Racing Club was founded in 1974, when a group of amateur racing drivers got together to form a club which would promote affordable racing for the popular saloon cars of the 1950s and early 1960s. During the ensuing years, the club has evolved and expanded as times changed somewhat, but the watchword in all the regulations is still stability, which ensures the return of competitors year upon year. Today, the Classic Touring Car Racing Club runs - in conjunction with the British Automobile Racing Club - six championships for production saloons at eight venues throughout England and Wales:

:: The Thermex Classic Saloons & Historic Touring Car Championship - Pre 1966 saloon cars, featuring iconic Lotus Cortinas dicing with Mini Coopers and Ford Anglias;
:: The Autoglym Post Historic Touring Car Championship - Pre 1974 saloon cars, tail-happy Ford Escorts, Triumph Dolomites and Ford Capris fight it out "Life on Mars" style;
:: Hammerite Racing Classic Group One Touring Car Championship - Pre 1983 saloon cars, lairy V6 Ford Capris battling with V12 Jaguars and V8 Rover SD1s;
:: SVG Motorsport Pre-1993 Touring Car Championship - Pre '93 touring cars, super smooth BMW M3s take on raucous Sierra Cosworths and VWs;
:: Sub-Zero: Wolf Classic Thunder Championship - lightweight slick-shod classics battle with flame-spitting turbo monsters;
:: Pro-Driver Blue Oval Saloons - fearsome turbocharged Cosworths battle against the classic Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts of the 1970s and 1980s, along with a group of nimble yet quick Fiestas.

The Alfa Romeo Owners Club was formed in 1964 and has grown to a membership of some 4,000, covering all the marque's various models and with an enthusiastic regional presence. AROC is actively re-vitalising its competition activities and the Mallory Classic "On Track" will see its major event of the year.

The motorcycle action will be provided by the The Lansdowne Classic Series, an official British Championship under the title "The British Historic Grand Prix Championship". This series is the most prestigious championship of its kind, catering for 500cc and 350cc Grand Prix machines of the type raced in the 1950s and early 1960s. Rounding off the Classic weekend's programme will be a Championship Sprint Meeting.

Historic Formula 2 season set for Hockenheim start
More than half a dozen potential race winners will be on the grid for the opening two races for the Historic Formula 2 Championship when the season starts at Hockenheim over the weekend of 16/17 April.

A highly encouraging 20-car field will gather at the German Grand Prix venue for the double-header within the Hockenheim Historic in memory of Jim Clark. The championship, managed by the UK-based Historic Sports Car Club, is open to cars built to period regulations for Formula 2, Formula Atlantic and Formula B, starting from 1967 and running right through to the end of the 1978 season. Later cars, designed to employ ground effect technology, are not permitted.

Heading the field will be 2010 race winners Matthew Watts (March 772), 2009 champion Martin Stretton (March 742) and Hans Peter (Ralt RT1). This trio won nine of the 12 races last season, with Watts winning four times including both Hockenheim races. That should make the Gloucestershire racer pre-event favourite in his ex-Norman Dickson car, but Stretton in particular is a hard-charging racer. However, a gaggle of quick racers will be aiming to add their name to the F2 list of race winners and experienced historic racers Richard Eyre (March 782) and Peter Wuensch (Ralt RT1) look like podium candidates, as does Swedish racer and former champion Bo Warmenius (March 772) Brazilian Abba Kogan (March 782) and British racer David Gathercole (Chevron B25). One of the oldest cars in the 2-litre class is the March 722 of Darwin Smith, but the very rapid Irish racer will surely take the fight to the newer cars. Meanwhile, sports car racer Steve Tandy will make a single-seater debut with his Chevron B40.

The class for 1600cc Formula Atlantic promises to be hard fought and is headed by former Grand Prix racer Ian Ashley in the March 79B of Mike Smith. His opponents include former Caterham racer Philip Gladman (Chevron B34) and Roland Wiltschegg (Chevron B39).

Among the 1600cc Formula 2 cars, the March 712s of Walter Nef and Diogo Ferrao take on the ex-Fittipaldi Lotus 69 of Roger Bevan and the oldest car in the race, the 1969 Brabham BT30 of David Brown. In 2010, more than 40 cars contested Historic F2 races and that number is set to be topped this season, with a field of 30 cars expected for rounds three and four at Donington Park on 30 April/1 May.

Donington Historic Festival 30th April - 1st May Fuel Orders.

Donington Park on circuit fuel station will not be open for the Donington Historic Festival, so our friends at Anglo American Fuels, have said they will try to assist competitors with supplying their fuel requirement for the weekend. Competitors will need to pre-order their requirements, and to enable Anglo American with their transport logistics, they would like to know by the 20th April what competitors will need. Click here to download a form. Remember to send it back to the address on the form. It is unlikely they will have any spare capacity to assist anyone who has not booked in advance.

Stretton and Watts share Historic Formula 2 wins at Hockenheim
British racers Martin Stretton and Matthew Watts shared the victories as the Historic Formula 2 Championship started at Hockenheim in Germany over the weekend (16/17 April).

Stretton won the opener in his March 742, while Watts won the second race in his March 772 as Darwin Smith (March 722) impressed on his debut run in the championship. The former modern single-seater ace from Northern Ireland ran strongly against the two more experienced F2 racers, but was forced to retire from the second race with an overheating engine. The tone for the weekend was set in qualifying as Stretton, Watts and Smith set the top three times. Stretton stamped his authority on the opening race from the start as Smith battled ahead of Watts. Eventually, Watts got back ahead of Smith but Stretton was out of reach as oil went down and made the track very slippery. Watts even had a quick spin on the oil at the Sachs Kurve, but didn’t lose a place. Peter Wuensch (Ralt RT1) headed Richard Eyre (March 782) for fourth, while Diogo Ferrao (March 712) topped the 1600cc class from the ever-consistent Walter Nef (March 712M).

Stretton’s bid for a double win took a major knock at the start of the second race when he was slow off the line thanks to a clutch problem. He dropped five places by the first corner as Watts made good his escape. Smith ran second as Stretton set about making up lost ground and he worked through to second as Smith was forced to switch his overheating engine off. Hans Peter took third in his Ralt RT1 from Wuensch, while Ian Ashley (March 79B) cured his misfire problems from the first race to finish fifth and win the Formula Atlantic class. Ferrao repeated his 1600cc class win from Nef and David Brown (Brabham BT30).

Races three and four of the Historic Formula 2 season will be at the Donington Historic Festival (April 30/May 1) when an entry of more than 30 cars is expected.

Record grid for Historic Formula 2 at Donington Park
A record grid of 32 cars will provide a capacity field for the Historic Formula 2 Championship at the Donington Historic Festival over the weekend of 30 April/1 May.

The championship, managed by the UK-based Historic Sports Car Club, is open to cars built to period regulations for Formula 2, Formula Atlantic and Formula B, starting from 1967 and running right through to the end of the 1978 season. Later cars, designed to employ ground effect technology, are not permitted. The 32-car entry is certainly the biggest since the HSCC took over the management of the category and is thought to be the biggest ever for Formula 2 as a period class.

At least half a dozen new drivers will make their F2 debut at Donington, including historic racing veteran Frank Sytner who will be racing the ex-Sean Walker March 782. Also new to Formula 2 is historic sports car racer and former TVR Tuscan racer Grant Tromans with a Chevron B42. Meanwhile, former Monoposto racer Jim Blockley joins Historic F2 with the Lola T460 last raced by Terry Fullerton.

Cars joining Historic F2 for the first time include the Brabham BT38 raced by Chris Meek when new, which will return to racing this weekend in the hands of Formula Junior racer James Claridge. Now back in ‘Tate of Leeds’ livery, the Formula Atlantic car later became the base of an early Pilbeam hillclimb car but is now back in original trim after a two-year rebuild.

Another car joining the F2 grid at Donington is the Ralt RT1 of Mike Catlow, which he found as a damaged project in America. “I had an RT1 in Formula Atlantic in the 1980s,” said Catlow, who has taken over three years on the rebuild. Until bought by Catlow, the Ralt had spent all its life in the US.

At the head of the field should be Matthew Watts (March 772) and Martin Stretton (March 742), who shared the race wins when the Historic F2 season started at Hockenheim over the weekend of 16/17 April. Other leading contenders include Peter Meyrick (March 782), Darwin Smith (March 722), Richard Meins (March 762), Hans Peter (Ralt RT1), Mark Dwyer (March 742), Steve Maxted (Lola T360) and David Methley (Chevron B35).

“We are absolutely delighted with the F2 field for the Donington Historic Festival,” said Grahame White, CEO of the HSCC. “We now have over 40 registrations for Historic F2. It will be wonderful to see so many period Formula 2 cars on the grid at Donington.”

Sorry to miss Giraffe at Silverstone yesterday, but I did bump into Alan Cox, David McK and the legendary Bauble (not longer just an e-presence in my fevered imagination).

Even with a Meeja tabard, Silverstone is pretty dreadful for photography, if you care about suitable backgrounds - but here are a few happy snaps from my perambulations:

Sorry to miss you Tony, and I really would have enjoyed putting a face to the Christmas tree decoration, Bauble. Had a bit of a crap day's end as my central locking fused jamming the Jag's doors & locking me out! Must have been the heat....

As far as I can tell I did not upset anybody.

Thanks for that but I didn't post the pic of the Rapier, Bob! However I am very fond of them having marshalled on the Buxton Trophy Rally in one in 1969, and having attended the very first F5000 race in another one at Oulton Park, Easter 1969. I also ran a Sunbeam Alpine on the road for several year, which I considered to be the sports car version of the car.
I'm surprised you didn't get the opportunity to upset me as I saw Mr McK & his entourage (well, his usual sidekick) on several occasions and nobody resembling your mugshot appeared to be in his esteemed company.

If it makes you any happier, I can reveal that I occasionally delivered Sunbeam Rapiers and other Rootes products for my employers, the NZ distributors, to various agencies around the North Island, and had the honour of writing off a Alpine MkIV with 35 miles on the clock

In 1993 I built a replica 'works' Sunbeam Rapier 111A for historic rallies. With overdrive operating on all four speeds, disc brakes, great reliability and a punchy engine it was in lots of ways the GTI of the early Sixties. We finished almost last on our first Monte Challenge but it was great fun.

Does this imply that my snaps are not 'quality', Peter? Several good people have posted pictures for us to view on the forum, are they all to be judged second rate?

No implied criticism of anyone's photos, Bob. I've never criticised anybody's pics on TNF (even if some might have merited it over the years ;) ) and I would agree that there are some fine contributions on this thread alone, yours included. I have, however, always been a great fan of Peter's work and, as he no longer posts his own efforts on here, I thought they merited a plug.

No offence taken atall, just bauble being his usual b***** minded self, Alan. I do not rank myself amongst the better photographers, the only boast I make about my images are that they are free to download. I tend to stick up anything that even half-way decent as it might possibly be the only one the driver gets to see. I have no pride!

The truth is that I have been taken to task so many times on various forums I decided it was an opportunity to have a moan myself, just for the fun of it.

Peter's snaps are excellent, by the way.
