this is a project that I started a while ago, trying to do as many circuits as I can starting from 1950, f1, f2 and some others, already working on american circuits, the idea is trying to show them as close as possible to the time of use

But one thing I am missing, is that you state "show them as close as possible to the time of use", and since you haven't put the year on the maps, we don't know 'when' that is.Taking SIlverstone as an example, we know that there are countless iterations. Which one is the above?

yeah that is something that I am fixing on the next ones, I started with the 50 season so most of them are from the 48 to early 51 period so far, as I get into the new seasons and get organized better, any change in layout will be noted by year , so for now unless is noted already on the map, they are from 1950

Your maps are superb.

 

The long circuit at Pukekohe hosted the New Zealand Grand Prix from 1963 - 1966. From 5th November 1966 most meetings were held on the short circuit, the exception being the annual Benson & Hedges 500 mile/1,000 km races for locally assembled saloons.

Good lord these are nice! There are some tracks here that I am not at all familiar with. I do have one tiny suggestion: Could you please include the start/finish line and the direction on all the maps? Many of them include it, but some don't, and I like to visually trace my way around a lap from start to finish.

These are lovely. They are obviously not made to the same scale, so could you include one in each drawing?

Are you planning on doing American ovals as well? They are not as boring as one might think, especially not when done with the surroundings like these.

The maps are beautiful and I'd consider them for wall art.

I saw these 3D maps of lakes laser-cut out of wood a few years back and immediately thought how neat racetracks would be if presented in the same fashion. These maps by ozpata confirms my thoughts on wooden 3D's also being a worthy project.

I have already started about 15 to 20 tracks to a good point, and there is a few more on the basics and some cars, plus the search to complete the data that I want for next ones to follow, 

 

usually what I do is to do a search in local governments, lands and parks, surveys, ortho pictures, always trying to find maps or the data as close to the dates that I want to work, so 50s will get done from maps or whatever I have around that time , usually from a variety of sources from 40s to mid or late 50s in those cases

I have purchased a book recently called " Motorsport Explorer" with over 800 historic locations to discover and visit in the British Isles.
This is very similar, and gives you something to explore while the wives are having High Tea somewhere in the Cotswolds.

It is a lovely book by TNF member Fuzzi - who worked for the Ordnance Survey, if memory serves. Good, even definitive ,  basis for research on UK circuits

Christer, it covers all known venues where races or speed events have been held in the British Isles (including the Republic of Ireland). It doesn't cover manufacturer locations etc.

Very, very well done. Being a cartographer myself, I can appreciate your efforts   For my web site I also made some track maps but in absolutely other style, making them according to Russian topographic map standards as close as possible: a joke void of any practical sense.

I agree, it's all beautiful work...

As one who's had a penchant for circuit maps (and their accuracy) as well as aerial photos of circuits for over fifty years, I do appreciate what you have done.

However, I must not have properly explained that ess-bend after the Viaduct at Longford to you. You show it here as a double-ess while it's only one. If you like I'll dig out the photo again.



And my adventure to find the Solitude circuit last year left me with a photo of where the road diverges from the existing road at Frauenkreuz which clearly shows that it's not a sharp road junction there but it's a sweeping bend leaving the existing road just before the crossroad.





I know it's a minefield to try and get this kind of accuracy with circuits and roads which have changed over the past fifty or sixty or even seventy years, but I'm sure you want to get them as close as you can.

Just to add some colour to ozpata's brilliant mapping...

The connecting leg at the south end of the original Elkhart Lake circuit was trickier than it looked. Here's the left hander:



So this went over a crest, then a downhill run brought up speed as one approached the right hander, I'm sure this was a real challenge:

I will be posting them here mainly, some american tracks that I am working on, Reno, Pebble Beach, Elkhart lake, Thompson, Golden Gate park , what I decided to do was basically start to follow the SCCA calendar and will probably add the WSC around 1953, but there will always be extras around

 

as I have explained before, I usually do a schedule following the f1/f2 season,championship and non championship races, have started from 1950 and always looking to put in some others extras, like Le Mans or Pau 1930,Watkins 1948, now I am doing some work on the Brno track and the 1946 season, like Nice which is already started
