Liam Lawson and Marcus Armstrong share the front row, Auer and Hyman the second.

With 7 of 15 races to go, Armstrong has extended his championship lead over Lawson (203 vs 169) after Hampton Downs where Lawson won race 3 thanks to some very aggressive moves but retired on the opening lap of race 4 because of a very aggressive move. Hyman is third in the championship on 141 points.

Lawson won the reverse grid race after Walls was deemed to have turned in on him and in the final race Auer was penalised for blatantly taking Lawson out of the race. Not aggressive moves at all just superior driving in both instances.

Well, to me Lawson looked very aggressive in that race – and it paid off. First he turned Walls around was involved in a racing incident with Walls. Then he put a lot of pressure on Auer, who locked up and lost a position. Finally, he was basically glued to the gearbox of Esteban Muth for quite some time before he could get into the lead. In the end he got the win but he could have easily lost the front wing or worse.

Sorry guys.

This series is coming to a race track very near me. Promoters have cut ticket price to a really silly price I'd be mad to miss but I still have the feeling I'm missing nothing, which is kind of sad.

As I've looked in on the current season I don't think I've missed a lot, so I'm not tempted by their offer. The series is struggling.

 

I was misplaced however by an extravaganza release, post Hampton Downs I think it was, regarding the award of a trophy to winner there that carried the boast of having being won by several notable drivers, amongst whom was Sir Stirling.

Now it wasn't the NZGP winners trophy which as far as I know is up for grabs at Manfield, aka Circuit Chris Amon, so I'm curious as to how another trophy seems to have garnered presence superior?

Just doesn't seem right, historically or morally, to me.....

NZ Motor Cup won by Armstrong at Hampton Downs is a race that is Auckland based going way back. Brabham and Moss swapped wins through late 50s early 60’s. Subsequently it was won by Surtees, Hill, Stewart , McLaren etc. Hence the prestige and history.
The NZGP is still the Grand Prix. The Moto Cup was/is part of the same series.

This years NZ TRS Championship is proving to be one , if not , the best in the history of its current format. Modern era it is a Junior Formula series. The close rivalry between Lawson and Armstrong has surprised most but not those ‘in the know’ that have followed Lawson’s career. This year Armstrong in his 3rd season of TRS and Auer at 24 yrs in his 4th TRS series and a past F1 tester and DTM race winner and with huge experience have been attracted by the cheap F1 FIA points on offer. The thing and phenomenon they weren’t banking on is the 1st season TRS , newbie to F3 level of car and 16 yr old amazing talent that Liam Lawson is. He has been under the radar of most but take Armstrong and Auer out of the series as would have normally have been the case without F1 pts on offer and Lawson would be dominating this series in a similar fashionthat Lando Norris did in TRS 2016, also aged 16.
A previous poster was writing utter nonsense about over agressive driving etc by Lawson. That truth is that this kid is the best 16 year old on the planet by a huge margin and is on his way to the big dance floor. Just go to Manfield, watch him and talk to some of the punters. Lawson is the real deal and is on his way to the very top.

One driver that has caught my eyes this season is Liam Lawson.

Anyway, he seems to be of the opinion that even the very talented drivers can be too aggressive at times.

I'm slowly becoming a Lawson fan! Finally, a kid who understands hard, but fair racing! (But he's a bit overenthusiastic sometimes though...)

They do it to reduce the number of laps behind the safety car. They have a swift restart procedure, so I think it has worked very well in previous races.

Sorry ANF you’ve got crossed up. Those old ADAC F4 comments were not mine. Also, would say it is actually the opposite of a “swift restart procedure” given the lack of budget and equipment at some of the NZ tracks it takes forever...but yes the red flag situ is a necessity because of that and the relativelly short races.

Good to see youre on board the ‘Awesome Lawson’ train balage06. However, if “over enthusiastic” or as ANF likes to call it “over agressive” means that you get taken out in the past year by more experienced drivers like Zendelli, Vesti, Auer, Fittipaldi, Schumacher, Das etc without receiving a Penalty (possibly one) and almost all of them received one ( and that doesnt include the list from Australia F 4) than i’d say they barely saw Liam coming and by then it was too late...oops sorry...all over... and in formative years that’s got to be a good thing. Whats he supposed to do ? Sit behind lesser drivers for the entire race. In the TRS because of the nature of the tracks its virtually impossible to pass so every opportunity has to be maximised. Hence the attention Liam is garnering because of passing manoevres never seen in the 15 years of the series before.Thats not to say i dont understand the sentiment, I do ... Liam had more DNFs last year i believe than any other championship podium winner ( dont quote me I only heard that ) for many years. So ... i guess what i’m trying to say is you shouldn’t crush a butterfly on a wheel and you can’t catch lightning in a bottle. Was Senna “overly agressive” ... go Liam.

Yeah, apparently for forcing Williams off the road in one of the hairpins in race 2 (nonsense penalty if you ask me).

He's apparently 6 points behind Lawson now. And they have the same number of wins.

Thank god the penalty only decided the outcome of the race and not the championship. To me it looked like Lawson was always going to run out of road on the exit of that corner and that he should have gotten out of the move, but maybe the onboard from Armstrong's car shows otherwise.

The man is 77 years old!
