A final hurrah for 2021 sprint qualifying races and a bit of an artificial boost with Hamilton starting at the back. Without that quirk I’m not sure how exciting it would have turned out.

Does make an irritating argument from Brawn etc to campaign for reverse grids (there’s a conspiracy theory in there somewhere)

As it’s a ‘sprint’, I’m not sure why the still hold off the DRS for the first 2 laps. I also think a good idea would be to extend the DRA activation window to 3 seconds instead of the 1 second. Make a real differential between it and the main event on Sunday.

Its basicly an add on of 24 laps to the main race now. Cant see the point of it.

This was all about Hamilton at the back and the free tyre choice again, still a massive NO!

Hamilton would of given us the same show tomorrow, and they are giving them a free tyre choice for the grand prix next year... All the sprint does is blue ball us by having to wait for the grand prix tomorrow, and thats just to see what Hamilton does, the rest of the grid was static after the start again!

I hate how late the sprint races are compared to the grand prix, and I hate qualy on a friday even more..

No. It makes a mockery of the most exciting session of the weekend and the races are too short to provide any kind of strategy battle. The only saving grace today was Lewis starting last and cutting through the field in a much faster car than anything bar the top two.

Back to normal in 2022 please.

I'm generally not opposed to change, and have given the sprint races the benefit of the doubt, but I don't think the current format is any good. Too short to feel properly satisfying, too much like the first stint of a race, except they stop the cars and we have to wait a full day to continue. And when the main race comes, we already have a good idea of cars' pace and there are less surprises. The tension build-up gets a bit lost.

If F1 want to change things up, it has to be something entirely different.

No, it was just a ‘get out of jail’ exercise for Mercedes and on that score it worked.

I believe a reverse grid for sprint with partial impact on points could be an option. Keep the "qualifying" as deciding event for start grid of race and the sprint.

Give points for sprint but only best three sprint results count for point consideration maybe?

Take away Hamilton though and what would we have been watching?

Might as well have the whole race on Saturday and the host a Fortnite tournament for the drivers on Sunday. That's what the youth demographic likes, right?

I think the outcome of sprint shouldn't be grid for Sunday. It's too much risk for reward. It's an opportunity for some extra points - maybe increase to 5 points instead of just 3. Qualifying on a Friday still.

Bottas’s start

Sainz’s start.

Sainz vs Max.

Kimi and Gio

Lando vs LeClerc

Max vs Sainz again

Perez vs Sainz

From memory. May be some battles I’ve missed or that the director didn’t show because there was also the Lewis action going on, that took up lots of camera time.

Verstappen chase Bottas, Sainz fend off Perez, Norris take Leclerc and Gasly, probably more than all of Monaco this year to be honest.

I don't understand why many Drivers give it a thumbs up (PR?).

Max said it was all about the start (proven today) and the Format needs some tweaks.. Parc Fermé among one of the issues.

But, yes.. it's 'fun' wetting one pants seeing Lewis gong from P144 to P5..

Reverse grid sounds fun, but also like potential carnage, with little time to repair the cars for the main race. Unless that comes first, which feels like blasphemy.

No. Useless and for me feels pointless and takes away from both the race and quali.

Yes
But.
Friday Q: Top 10 get reserved grid spots for Sunday race
Sprint start with top 10 Q in reverse order, rest in Q order
      Points 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1
Grid positions >10 for Sunday according to the finishing order of those who did not have a reserved grid spot.

I hate it but it is staying so need improve it, its too short IMO needs to be 40% of a GP distance at least so tyre wear is a factor

Make the sprint a proper race and give proper points. Don't call it a bloody pole.

Might want to do reverse grid if next year's cars are easy to overtake.

No, unless we start seeing sprint tyres that are deliberately outside the spec window of the race tyres for some spicy racing.

But at that point it's Mariokart.

Frankly I'd rather see the Sprint Races in identical GP2 cars painted in F1 team colours (to appease sponsors) and see them save the Grand Prix cars for the main event on Sunday.

A definite no. But it's useless to resist, because Crypto.com is paying 100 million dollars for it. I just wish F1 was led by people who don't care about the money but about the sport.

The big, fat 2021 cars seems a lot more agile in the sprint. Assumingly because they they race with 1/3 of the fuel? And they can push a lot harder because of the shorter distance?

It might work, if it was a proper race with proper points.
Certainly more fun than watching FP3....

No.

Alternative? Given that it's here to stay and is going to be the first of many new gimmicks being introduced, think of an alternative name to 'Formula One'. For me it meant exclusivity, prestige, uniqueness. Having so many races, many at cookie cutter racing circuits with the same sponsors and run off areas, removes the exclusivity. Implementing a mini Grand Prix on Saturday removes the prestige. Following NASCAR down the over saturated, gimmicky road to nothingness removes the uniqueness. It's still cars going around the track, but it stopped being Formula One to me a while back.

Just my two cents, don't mean to put words into the mouths of others.

I still think this is a bad idea but have to admit:

1. for the people at the track, it is waaay better (from my experience of Silverstone) - your 3 day ticket actually gets you 3 days of action

2. all 3 weekends so far have been super

I still think that point 2 is down to luck, and small sample size. But I'm not going to say they were crap, when to me they obviously weren't, just to try and justify my view that this is very likely a bad idea/format.

I could see some fun in that.

FP1 and qualification on Fridays.

FP2 and sprint on Saturdays.
Start in sprint is reverse grid based on Friday qualification, proper points are given, perhaps a bit longer race.

Race on Sunday.
Start in qualification order, normal points.

I'll watch that. In particular if they reduced the number of raceweekends....

My issue with at Silverstone is that is was far too late and having F1 as the last track action of the day and Friday and Saturday meant leaving the tack was a nightmare, I normally stay and watch all the action.

I say no. I liked the one in Silverstone best, and then when the shine went off with the next ones I feel it really doesnt add much.

Next year they'll be able to pick tyres every race, so even that advantage is gone.

I'm really not sure. Today is was good fun but other two times it's been a bit crap, Ted said that next year the qualy session on Friday will set Sundays grid at the six sprint weekends. However, there will be a mini 'sprint championship' whatever that is.

I prefer the more traditional set up tbh.

not saying this happened here but what I hadnt noticed till now is that this format certainly encourages to go into grey areas legally. You get an extra 30 % to make up if you get caught.

Yes, you can run an illegal car and be disqualified from qualifying, and still start the Grand Prix from pole position.

Agreed it was a huge break for Hamilton that the penalty is enforced before the sprint instead of after, in effect getting 24 laps to limit the damage before the real race. By chance of this being one of 3 sprint races, and the last of the season.
