Was Jeff Jordan behaviour more like Colin Chapman or Ken Tyrrel ?
Was Chopper already managing JYS in 1966 ?

Chris,

I don't believe that either Chapman or Tyrrell would act in the manner that Jordan did in the movie.

Teddy Mayer, on the other hand, was always in Peter Revson's face about one thing or another.

In fact, in a brief conversation I had with Peter, he mentioned that Teddy used to claim that Peter couldn't drive a manual trans properly!!

This is mentioned in Revvie's autobiography also.

At some point in 1973, McLaren secretly signed Fittiipaldi for '74, and they also had Hulme and Revson under contract. Hulme would stay, which left Revson the odd man out. I wonder if Teddy was ragging on Revson to get him to quit, so Teddy wouldn't have to be the bad guy and fire him?

Keir, I'd love to hear any recollections you have of PJRR, if you're so inclined. PM, or this thread, or another thread.

Dave,

One of the memories I have of Peter is on a brief trip to NYC, we ran into each other at Rene Dreyfus' Le Chanteclair. Peter was, as usual, in a hurry, but remembered who I was and then as if his other plans suddenly changed, we began a long conversation about slot car racing. And he asked about how it would look if he lent his name to Aurora?? I couldn't believe that he was truly interested in my opinion, but Peter being Peter always made those in his company feel like they were part of the club!! Then we talked about advertising and all the upcoming projects he was working on. Not once did any talk of F1 racing come up and I found that to be a little odd because the common perseption was that F1 drivers live, eat and sleep F1. Peter didn't and Chris Amon and Mike Hailwood didn't. I think that's what I found so refreshing about them. They all just came across as regular guys!!

MAN!!! This is a great thread.
I first saw this movie when I was about 5 or 6. It's the reason I became an F1 fan.
Jordan reminds me of Peter Warr. He was very hard on his drivers that he didn't like.
But to answer the first question. I always thought that Pete did try to let Scott through. Scott hit Aron. And to get back at him started shagging his wife!

As has been said, there are lots of subtleties to the GP plot.

I like the scene when Aron goes to Namura and has the discussion about WW2 over a cup of tea. I don't think any other film made in that era would have brought that subject up in that way.

The great stuff continues!!

Another of my fav scenes is when Barlini has the Yamura models on each arm. Scott seeing this says, "Two, Nino?' And Nino says, "They are very small!"

Another thing that I always wanted to know was the name of the band and the song that plays at the night club where Nino met Lisa. Does anybody knows ?

I always rated Sarti, sure he was old, sure he was tired but he never gave up.

He always put his foot down becasue he knew others woiuld be lifting theirs.

Wasnt Aron recently re-united with his Jordan-BRM a few years ago? Setting some fairly rapid times to if I remember correctly..

Yeah, something like that...

This Aron bloke was a raw novice when he started, never driven a car with gears before, but somehow Jordan employed him, then Yamura... maybe old man Jordan showed him how to use the clutch himself.

But it stuck with him and after he gave up racing he found he had a real liking for a bit of a speedy run down a twisty road, slipping up and down the gears. So he was at Monaco and one of his old cars was there, they bolted him into it and he just reverted to type.

Old Fangio used to do that too...

Remember that Aron was a Ferrari team leader early in his career!!

.....but he didn't want to be #2 to Sarti!!

Pete was re-united with his old car at Monza, it seems there was this Canadian kid along for the drive as well!!

Everyone freaked out because of the insurance issues if he had crashed. When he came back he had a very big grin on his face and then said "no one told me about the second chicane".
Classic!

BTW after the filming was over. Hill and a few other drives tried to convince him to take up racing for real. Because he showed a lot of natural talent.

Other than the James Bond quote of " do you expect me to talk? -- No Mr. Bond I expect you to die."

That Sarti one is my second favorite.

All that stuff with Mr. and Mrs. Scott Stoddard and Pete!!

Pretty advanced stuff for a film made in 1966!!

.....and the kicker is that none of it was shown, only implied!!

Here's something for you.

What were the ages of all the actor's during the filming of the movie?

Remember, they filmed during the GP season in '66!

If you wax desperate, then at least the leading players like Pete, Sarti, Nino, Scott and their relative female interests. And don't forget Sarti's wife!!

back to the original title of the thread and IIRC Bandini was one of the 'stunt' drivers called in to drive stoddard's car during the crash sequence...what a strange and sad twist of fate to be-fall him the following year...

I thought that there was a mock-up driver placed in the car??

The whole scene was done by pulling the quasi-Jordan BRM with a crane, I don't think that any human could have been subjected to that!! Bandini was pretty good, but as we know, he wasn't immortal!!

The crashes at the chicane and on the Monza banking were shot with an air-cannon nicknamed 'Big Blow' - there's lots about it on that thread.

When Montand saw the rushes of the Monza crash, he is alleged to have said "Whoever was doubling me was too thin"

There are quite a few tales of the actors being victimized by the stunt drivers!!

When Antonio Sabato was being a spoiled boy, Frankenheimer asked Chris Amon to give him the ride of his life in the "Chariot". This was a Ford GT40 with a mock up race car connected directly behind it. Chris took off slowly and Antonio was doing the usual "fake driving moves" when Chrissy upped the ante and started to really get moving. The footage showed Antonio cowering in the cockpit. He was a very well behaved actor afterwards!!

James Garner, on the other hand, was well respected by the drivers and some said he might have done well if he chose driving as a career!

Oversteer1- it's Mike Hawthorn (I believe he was from Farnham or thereabouts).

As for original question- I believe Pete was making his usual mess of things while being lapped. Sorry, but I can't say I ever liked that fellow much, being a Sarti fan.

If you guys behave, I may take a spot of trouble and dig out a pic of Mmselle Hardy resting in the cockpit of 312 for you to drool over.;)

And it appears to be in the publicity shot at Monza, at left-rear with the white wheels.

Well, it's A Brabham/Ferrari...........we talked in another thread about how many 1.5-litre cars MGM had used, apart from the expendable Lotus 20 fakes, and it seems there were three Brabhams; a blue Climax, a BRM (which Chris Amon tried to qualify at Monza in 'Yamura' paintwork), and another Climax-powered car.

So maybe the top pic is the other Climax car, without the extra fake exhausts.....

Apologies if this has been mentioned but I've just had a rush of blood to the head and remembered I have the stereo MFP long player: "the exciting racing sounds of GRAND PRIX challenge of champions. Recorded on the Grand Prix courses of the world where the motion picture "GRAND PRIX" was filmed. With comments by the World Champions."
Track listing:
1. Narrator Phil Hill interviews Graham Hill. John Frankenheimer tells of his fascination with Formula 1.
2. Sounds recorded at the Italian GP - Repco, Coventry Climax, Honda & Maserati during the warm-up. Also the sound of the Ferrari V12 lapping the circuit.
3. Sounds recorded at the Monaco GP - The start, a lap aboard Graham Hill's BRM. Phil Hill talks about F1 engines.
4. Sounds recorded at the Belgian GP - Rindt through the Burnenville Curve and along the Masta Straight.
5. Sounds recorded at the British GP - Pre-race atmosphere - jet fighter planes, military band + F1 cars
