Didn't Stan Keen hold the outright record in an Elfin MR5 for a while? So 5000 on the hill wasn't without precedent.

I believe so. Stan was a competitor there in 5000s a few times I believe , though before my time as well as his formula Holdens about 20 years ago. He used both his road race one as well as another with a large high front wing which was his hillclimb special.

He has ran there in very recent times in his Grandsons Evo 9. I believe he went well.

I completely forgot to share those photos until I just saw the topic now.

All taken at the Jim-Clark revival in Hockenheim this year. I was only one day there and didn't see the car running.

"One of the highlights" (of the Jim Clark Revival) "was the beautifully restored Crosslé 15F Formula 5000 car you see below, one of just three ever built. This is chassis C15F7042, driven by German Manfred Nord. Crosslé introduced the 15F in 1968, either equipped with a 5.0 litre Chevrolet or Ford engine. Two cars raced in the United States, although without any success. The third car saw action in the United Kingdom racing in the British F5000 championship."

I had Mark Blyfield in yesterday who actually drove that Lola once. 

Stan did run the Elfin  5000 there in the mid 70s as did Don Fraser with his  5000 as well.

Apologies for the Instamatic quality. Roger Williamson in the Kitchmac after qualifying 8th for the Rothman's F5000 race at Brands Hatch. 21st October 1972.

Absolutely gorgeous and in my opinion, devoid of fancy aero/MGUKs/TURDs or whatever, and replete with a big noisy V8 and fat slicks about as close as you will get to the definition of "a racing car".  OK it was blown away by the Lolas and McLarens of the day but it always defined brutal underdog optimism. I saw it race in period, it never looked this well turned out, but so what.

 

Funny how Fred Saunders' title would always be prefaced by "deep sea diver" in the same way that we had John Lepp "the jeweller" and Chris Meek "property developer".

Similarly, ‘Brilliant Bob Wollek’ and ‘film stuntman Val Musetti’. Which reminds me of this story:

I'm reminded of a daily newspaper report on a race featuring Val Musetti. Can't remember which paper or race, but the reporter evidently read his copy over the phone. The relevant passage should have read (something along the lines of) :

". . . and the race was won by Joe Bloggs ahead of Fred Smith, film stuntman Val Musetti, Peter Piper etc etc"

What they actually printed was:

". . . and the race was won by Joe Bloggs ahead of Fred Smith, Phil Stuntman, Val Musetti, Peter Piper etc etc"

No apology needed, Charles.  Thanks for posting - any picture of Roger is great as far as I am concerned (as long as it isn't in a March 731 at Zandvoort).

 

As you know, Roger raced the car at the previous Oulton round a week before and could have finished third had he not had a coming together with John Cannon's March at Lodge at the end of the race.  Tom Wheatcroft had hired the car in the hope that Roger would win the Grovewood (?) UK series open to F5000, British Touring Cars (Group Two) and probably something else - my memory evades me...

The championship Tom was trying to get Roger to win was the Tarmac British Racing Championship. This was based on the results of all British international races plus (from 1978) selected races outside GB. It was open to all British and Commonwealth drivers holding British international competition licences, and ran from 1972 to 1980.

In 1972 Frank Gardner won it comfortably in the end, with 92 points to Roger Williamson’s 75 and Brian Redman’s 64.

re. the Crossle 15F featured in the pics above...

 

I'm assuming from the livery and signwriting that it is actually the ex-Fred Saunders F5000 car (which I remember seeing in Fred's hands)... but didn't he run it in period with a 3.5 Rover V8 ?

Or am I confusing two (or more) different cars?!

A Brian Dandridge cine film compilation including footage from a Brands Hatch F5000 meeting (17m onwards). I think it's the Sep 27th 1970 round, Gardner and Walker on the front row of the rolling start. That's Mike chatting with Howden Ganley on the 'front page'. Many other good things too.
