Is the middle shot Peter Gethin, John? Aside from Phil Hill and an early Chaparral, I can't ID the circuit in pic three...

The engine is not about to blow at Knickerbrook...as the marshall is highlighting there is rather a lot of chalk dust due to an oil leak in the previous race

Autumn 1976. The Damned release New Rose (broadly acknowledged as the first British punk single), but the UK charts are still awash with Demis Roussos (When Forever Has Gone), Abba (Dancing Queen) and Smokie (I'll Meet You At Midnight). Meanwhile, on October 2 (superfluous piece of information: Phil Rainford's 16th birthday), there's a race meeting going on at Oulton Park...


CP (Paul?) Haworth studies his parking technique from atop the Lodge banking. Unfortunately, his Chevron B8 is facing the oncoming traffic.


I apologise that this really isn't very sharp, but I suspect it might have a certain rarity value that will appeal to ORC central. I think the car is Richard Simms's Chevron B24, but the driver is Special Saloon escapee Jim Evans. I can't make out the name on the side of the cockpit (no evidence of the word 'Evans'), so I'll have to trust my contemporary captioning accuracy.


Maintaining a cloak of obscurity, whatever became of José de Uriarte after his Open Single Seater campaign in 1976? Nice typography, José...

Somewhere I still have my ticket to see the Damned and the Sex Pistols at Bristol's Colston Hall (Dec '76). The concert was banned by Bristol City Council following the infamous Pistols/Bill Grundy episode. 'New Rose' is still one of my favourites.

First Jam single was March 77 I think, In The City. About the time of the only Lyncar F1 win IIRC...

Not Mike Newman, Dan. His Viva was turquoise and orange, this one was brown and gold.

Don't think it says Bob Howlings on the Chevron - I am 100 per cent sure Jim Evans is the driver, though. Winstanley might remember, I think he was in the same race.

I thought the Uriarte car looked more like a 752, to be honest.

And Rainford used to be the school bore on all matters Jam (although, to be fair, I was guilty of the same when it came to Camel, Barclay James Harvest or Gabriel-era Genesis). At one stage, I recall Phil rambling on endlessly about a forthcoming Blondie gig and then not being able to get in when he arrived... The rest of the William Hulme GS lower sixth found that passably amusing.

Going back to the Viva, the driver's surname has distinctive musical overtones that hark back to the pioneering days of new wave...

I went to a Cambridge gig to see Van der Graff Generator...who didn't turn up, so the promoter put on this band called 'Blondie' instead, none of us had ever heard of, about 25 people there as VdGG had cancelled. Thought Blondie were particularly bad and would never get anywhere, but Debbie Harry eh.... better looking than that Van der graff Generator lot! I went to see BJH just the other week!

Ken was a local guy from Sidcup and was mainly associated with racing a lovely,white, 1,293 "S" (IIRC entered by Crippspeed Racing), he did, however, offer conversions of the MGB to Rover V-8 power, just before the factory marketed a model of this vehicle.

Thank you Chris. Here are a few more from Long Beach 1978. It's the only Formula Atlantic I have on hand at the moment. I always enjoyed the FA races at Long Beach. It was a chance to see some of the locals mix it up with the series regulars.

First two were shot through the chainlink so not the best.

Wow, what a terrible picture of Dad and the DBR4 (great picture from you though Alan!!). I always hated that helmet (Centurion IIRC) and it was squareish and the overralls are Brands Hatch instructor overralls, what was Dad thinking, haha!!

Out of interest Alan I have Dad down as doing one race in '90 at Oulton in the DBR4, 15th September, qualified 2nd and won; would these dates be the same?

Yes it was Monoposto. As I shared the car we could do Formula Ford and Monoposto at the same meeting. Slicks were great if the tyres could get hot enough to work on a Formula Ford without changing the settings.

I'd like to present the following as a contender in the sublime/ridiculous stakes...


The idiot in the foreground (me, basically) is a handful of laps away from inflicting serious bodily harm on the Zeus ZR1 (hit the fence very hard just before Becketts - green paint was still visible on the sleepers about two years later). Among the pit clutter in the background, you might just pick out a West Surrey Racing Ralt RT3 (fiefdom of one A Senna). Has a greater talent gulf ever have been captured in a single photograph?

No idea who is driving the Mallock to the left, but Mallory Dan might oblige...

Could be Creighton Brown's Mallock, but there again no idea who that is entering the pit lane in the far distance...

This looks like the Zeus you drove Simon, Peter Sneller's car IIRC? Silverstone 1982, John Village leads in the Crompton Lighting RP29 ( could be an RP31) with team mate John 'Butcher' Booth behind Andy Wallace (no. 3).
The green Zeus follows Keith Fine (no 7).


Talking of Andy Wallace, is this him at Donington? No notes with these photos, but dated on the back 1982 also.
The RfB on the side makes me think it is Andy, plus sponsored by Sieger. Weren't they a gas appliance outfit and Andy worked as a gas engineer?

Peter Sneller seemed to be a pretty decent driver. Am I right in thinking that Zeus was Peter and his brother, and the car was used as the design for Silverstone Racing School vehicle for the punters.

I have a vague recollection of good old Rog E driving a Zeus (I may have been in the same race). It's possibly a Champion of Oulton round as the Zeus might not have been allowed in Formula E. I'm certain he didn't buy it and I'm sure hire might relate to lend

Roger for all his escapades was decent bloke and it was nice to meet up with brother Peter at Oulton last year. Peter has since had a raced at Anglesey so hopefully has caught the bug again

My car, but not me. My brother in law, Andrew Whitehouse is driving. The top picture is a good one. we were trying to figure out if running an airbox made any difference. All it gave us was a misfire.

The Madgwick sticker on his visor comes from a Cadwell meeting when Antonio Albacate's helmet failed scrutineering and Antonio borrowed Andrew's helmet for his race. I have a piccy somewhere that I can post.

Not an usual position at times. Roger could be fearless! He made a few enemies but I had no problem with him, and liked him.

It helped that he was a lot further up the grid than me so I kept out of his way

Utter claptrap, Mr R. I spun it in Norfolk. Pic below shows Mallock pointing in the correct direction.


Other than once threading a Jim Russell Van Diemen RF78 between plastic cones on the Hangar Straight, I had no circuit experience at all prior to clambering into Will's U2 at Snetterton. On about my second lap I assumed I was going fairly quickly... until a Renault 5TS zapped me into Riches. In fairness, I did repass it immediately and wasn't subsequently troubled by any hatchbacks (although I did almost sideswipe Mr Senna's FF2000 Van Diemen when he sliced past me at the Esses).

Unlike the Zeus, which was badly mangled, sadly, the Hoy Mallock sustained no serious damage when my confidence finally exceeded my car control (also at the Esses).
