There was no Spitfire in the 1962 RAC rally of 1962 - it had only been announced four weeks earlier, and was not yet homologated.

That car was acting as a team 'chase' car, and was behind a 'works' TR4 in that shot.

How do I know ? Because I was driving it - and I once got stopped by the police, who thought it was an MG Midget which had recently been reported stolen ....

Fred,

Thank you very much, I don't suppose you also have the results for 72 Stan Pateman.

Rupert,

According to Tony Bancroft's book ACE Bristol #75 AC ACE UPJ 75 has an extensive race / rally history, including London and Alpine Rally #402 in 1954 and Tulip Rally in 55. In 1958 it was also raced by Bob Staples (looks like most weekends in the season!).
AC ACE WPF 200 #74 was entered by KG Cramp, Maroon / Grey (looks like only 1 month old, built 5th Feb 1955) also entered Goodwood 17th March 1956.

Regards Rob

Regarding Rupertlt1, and his 1955 RAC rally results chart.

The winning co-driver was Brian Harrocks, not Brian Horrocks. He was always too modest to demand a correction for many years, and it was not until the early 2000s, when I was writing a 'works' Triumph book, that I managed to meet him, and have him put me straight ....

Thanks for this - fixed above. Keep it coming!

To save me a huge amount of typing at this end I have just emailed you direct a copy of the list of entries for the 1955 RAC Rally from the programme.

I have also copied across all the Sunbeam Talbot details, Driver/Navigator, ST model,  reg number, comp number, and finish results.

Many thanks. Are you saying #147 Sunbeam Talbot Mk3, PWK 605, P.D. Harper/D. Humphrey, was 10th O/A and not as above?

According to my records yes no 147 finished 10th overall.

Trying to find accurate results from any RAC Rally in the1950s beyond the top finishers and class winners I have found to be very difficult.

So if anyone can come up with a complete list I will correct my records.accordingly

Further to the above regarding car 147 Peter Harper..

Reading the Autosport report18/3/55 page 332 - 340

...announced as retirements at the Whitney control ...Peter Harper (Sunbeam) was said to have retired but apparently he did check in at the control and continued after a slight accident. I have no information on this.

Harper was later reported in class times as -

Blackpool test...good times were recorded by ...Harper's Sunbeam,

Short speed hillclimb at Brock Mill 6th fastest

Cadwell Park 3rd fastest

Silverstone 5th fastest

Prescott 2nd fastest

Goodwood 2nd fastest

Final test at Hastings 1st

So clearly he finished with some very good times but might have lost a lot of time early in the rally?

Does anyone have any more information?

Chris, The historical consensus has been that these events were "a walk in the park" compared to the forest events of the sixties.

The quote from Sydney Allard rather goes against this. Could Harper have been delayed in the snow?

I'm assuming that the 10th placed Seward/Johnson finish probably came from the April 1955 Motor Sport report (I've gone through the list of sources I used), but don't have it to hand if you wish to cross-check.

In his book "Rally Of The Forests" published 1970, Phil Drackett wrote as follows regarding the 1955 final classification: - The official records for this year are incomplete following a drastic revision of the provisional placings issued at the finish. The following are the only official placings later issued... - Then he goes on listing the first four as in the above list.

My question is, did RAC ever issue the full, official standings for this rally later on (after 1970)? If yes, where and when did they do it?

Apologise all round and I stand corrected on the issue of .........the 1955 RAC Rally where Peter Harper was indeed 51st overall & 10th in class.

You managed to read my database easier than I could??!!

I put it down to old age and getting ready for Beaulieu Auotjumble weekend.....where watching paint dry would have been more productive....

Harper dropped 2680 road penalties to the Blackpool halt compared to 200 for the eventual winner.

From there to Hastings he dropped 1310 compared to 180 for Ray.

Harper describes the event at length in "Destination Monte". The initial delay was caused by 30 or so cars blocking an icy hill and subsequently falling off the road.

A couple of further "offs" compounded things......

From what I can see the provisional results each year in the 50s and early 60s were produced on cheap paper on a portable copier and stapled together.

After the event a professionally printed final set was produced.

For 1955 there are provisional results on cheap paper as expected. However another set printed by F.J.Parsons Ltd of London and Hastings exists.

This set does say "provisional" but I have my doubts. Could that wording have been inserted by mistake?

Autosport reported that results were not available for the Mayor's ball but were posted the following day. There was no follow up report referring to results becoming final.

The RAC were capable of errors; I have their in-house publication from 1968 with the headline - Simo Lampinen and Mike Wood win RAC Rally!

As you say in the Autosport it said the prize giving ball went ahead without any results being posted. The trophies would have made a nice display!!!

Thanks or more info about Peter Harper. It was fairly clear he had had some problems early on to loose so much time. Jusat going to check out Destination Monte to read that section

I remember contacting the RAC 'Library' many years ago to ask about results and all they had back then was an incomplete set of programmes. Hopefully they have better system now, but I guess not?

Chris, I enquired a few years back re R.A.C. archives - when researching Firle Hill Climb - apparently they disposed of much material when they morphed into the MSA.

This rally stuff needs copying to an archive before it is lost for good.

I visited the RAC Club about 2 month's ago to try to research the RAC Rally, I was told by Trevor Dunmore Club Librarian that some archive material is held off site 'in Westminster' however, in order to visit the archive it has to be manned. I'm waiting for a date for a visit but no info yet. I'll give him a chase. They do have a heritage catalogue which is searchable through www.royalautomobileclub.co.uk click on heritage menus however, I've tried unsuccessfully to find any useful detailed information.

Rob, This is another well known problem to researchers - an archive that is either difficult or impossible to access. (The latter case prevails here in Canada.) RGDS RLT

Just checked - it was 62 I sent you, thought it might have been 64. I can send you 64 (but on same basis re-reg nos as 62).
I haven't kept colour records but can help with many of them. Some will be well known eg. works "DOO" Cortinas were red.

I can place all your "fragments" except Saab PA9937, Cortina GT 4EXT and Mini 268FTA.
Unless we both have the Carlsson works Saab wrong as PA9939, PA9937 is almost certainly Ake Andersson/Torsten Aman, running down at 125.
4EXT is a well known car, around today in (believable) "original" condition and associated with Trevor(?)Shaw later and Ron Channon.
268FTA is one of several possibilities.

I'd better clarify for TNF accuracy that "all works DOO Cortinas were red" applies to the 64 RAC context. The "DOO" registrations were used up to mid 65 on GT Cortinas (except the white Safari cars). KPU Lotus Cortinas then took over once the Lotus was homologated with proper rear suspension (ducks for an onslaught by Chapman fans). 63 works GTs were white (except the Pat Moss RWC car, which was white then red - and not from a re-spray...).

RGDS RLT

PA9937 was the red works Saab of Ake "Briggan" Andersson and ran at No. 31 although originally listed at No125. Presumably a late entry. Bizarrely, the same thing happened on the 1963 RAC and the Andersson Saab was given a late number then ran in the 20s. Three works entered Saabs in 64 - Carlsson, Moss-Carlsson and Andersson. The Lampinen Saab was works-built but entered and registered by Saab Finland.
Not sure whether No.77 was POO or PUO.

Yes.  Or if it isn't, I really, really want to know what could be weirder!  Although, being a sceptical and suspicious type, I have a feeling that this might be one of those excuses used to cover up some more realistic but less forgiveable reason for the cancellation.  Like ''elf & safety' is (mis)used all the time nowadays.

Regards Rob

Ref 1955 R.A.C. Rally I have found a photograph of #73 A.C. Ace, registration VPG 600, driven by K.N. Rudd, in the speed and braking tests at Hastings. Does this indicate he was a finisher?

I watched the 63 RAC as it came past our front door !  From Stage 1 Grizedale, they went to Ambleside then up the Struggle to the top of Kirkstone Pass, where there was a TC in the pub. From there they dropped down, past Brotherswater [where we lived], through Patterdale & Glenridding and on to Stage 2 Greystoke. I can still picture White PV544s, Red SAABs, Healeys, Cortinas and Minis etc going past.....I stood [aged 10] at the roadside in our car park....finally, car 79 stopped. Well, you wouldn't drive past your home without stopping would you, it was Dad   :drunk:

But how sad that's it's all gone away. (I suppose we are to be grateful we saw some of it). Well, I am, anyway.

Thanks Rupertlt1, I hadn't seen that photo before. I have 2 others, one showing the N/S front wheel assembly trying to make a break for freedom !!. gearbox issues forced their retirement in South Wales.

Just the excuse to finish transcribing the programme list. Hope this helps Rupert.

Also hoping any mistakes are the ones published 55 years ago, not me making fresh ones. If anyone knows better then please mention it here..

Absolutely true. The annoying part is .. it does not have to be this way .

I'm afraid it does. I was involved in it in one way or another for some 18 years, many as a competitor. When I look at my fuel bill alone for a mid eighties RAC and translate that forward...
Health and Safety (not Timo Salonen and Walter Rohrl complaining, as I often claim) caught up with it.
