There's of course "Thursdays" nightclub that sponsored Alan Jones' RAM March F5000.....

and who was it that had a car sponsored by "Pubs and Clubs" (just that - no further explanation) on the hills in the late 70s? Brain says Chris Cramer, AD-O, or Roy the Boy, in that order of probability, but head is full of cotton wool and brain has been drinking Lemsip Max today and may be a bit woozy.

Someone also had "Gruenhalle" sponsorship on the hills, which was Greenalls' attempt to make their p*sswasser lager sound Continental. "Start 'em young on junior beer" as they used to say in Viz ;)

Wasn't there a "Fridays" as well  I'm sure I remember a RAM Chevron with "Fridays" on the nose - as opposed to "Thursdays"...

Oh no, not Grunhalle - remember that stuff? :( Very grim.

It was Chris Cramer who had their backing with his various Marches down the years - mid to late seventies, if not even into the early eighties, or whenever he gave up.

That name of that filthy Grunhalle stuff was on the car of either Cramer or AD-O, can't remember which one, but definitely a March. Dunno about "Pubs and Clubs", though. One of my favourute cars on the hills was the March-Allegro Turbo, driven by Rob Oldaker, with the "Vroooom" slogan (used to acvertise the Allegro) on the rear wing.

Oh bugger it Mark, you've just stolen my thunder!

Have YOU been grabbed by the Gruenhalles? ;P

Nice to see Rob Oldaker's Longbridge-related turbocharged engine history goes back long before the EX.257 project ;)

Over here we have various claims for Fridays, Tuesdays and Thursdays as RAM's sponsor.

Awsome decor.
They make you sign a waver before you order the "Hot" sauce on the famous chicken wings.
I order that stuff by the case and have it shipped to Canada.
The Harley Bar is as memorable as the good selection of Beers.
It's a chain and if you want to combine your love of food and drink and racing, get a franchise for your neck of the world.

Chaps, yeah RAM had both Thursdays (the March 751) and Fridays (the Chevron B24/28) backing them in the mid-70s. Did the Ginger one have connections there I wonder ?

On the hills issue, its always bothered me as to how Chris Cramer got the Greenalls deal. from memory he was based in the Cotswolds area, while Greenalls were exclusively, in those days, in the NorthWest. Later sold out to the deVere Hotel people, and the brewery to the Tetley combine. The March 722 Allegro, wasn't there a chap called Andy Smith also involved ??

I must admit that the Friday's sponsorship doesn't conjure up an image for me, Dan. Do you have a pic? I know that somewhere I've got a ticket for Thursday's, but can I find it? Can I eckerslike...

I remember Tony Dean carrying signage for 'Cinderella's' and 'Rockerfella's' on his F5000 Chevron during the mid-seventies.

And does anyone recall the 'Funny Girl' logos which appeared on a few F1 drivers' helmets in 1972 (I think). Was that a club... or maybe it was a magazine. I forget!

We used to hear a lot about the Steering Wheel Club, somewhere in London.
Had a bent Moss steering wheel on the wall IIRC.
Does it still exist?

Rene,
Is it THIS bar or the one at the back near the hotel rooms?

Loved that place at Zeltwig you mentioned...

Anybody familiar with "The Portobello Inn" ?

Tony Trimmer's efforts in F5000 were often supported by the said "Inn" - I'm sure it must have been a real place, but have any of us been there ?

Was it (as I assume) in Kent and, therefore, not in West London, or have I got it completely wrong...?

Somewhat surprisingly, this was taken on my Instamatic at Brands in 1973...

Not sure... are you thinking of 'Double Diamond' (..works wonders, works wonders...!) Or maybe it was a cookery ware line? As in non-stick pans.

God, no. I'd erased that from my memory years ago and now you've made me feel quite unwell I'll have you know - and doubtless anybody else reading this for that matter

So, come on, where's the Portobello Inn then? Wasn't it near Brands?

Yes, went there once. Bodfari, North Wales. Huge pub I recall (foody pub).

Chap that ran it was a fellow called Gilbert - good bloke, really enjoyed his racing.

Dinorben Arms, Tickled Trout -- it's amazing the deals people would cook up to avoid drinking in the fairly basic Aintree clubhouse ;)

(which survived the passing of racing there - my sister used to pull the odd pint of mild in there for Aintree Villa FC and its hangers-on when she was in her early teens ;P)

On the A20 @ West Kingsdown. The ex-landlord is a good buddy of mine and he has some wondeful tales about Brands Hatch in the glory years.

He's never mentioned the T.L. sponsorship but knowing the characters involved I suspect that this deal was brokered late at night after a few beers and a lot of laughter. I'll find out and let you know..

The Sally Lunn Restaurant, Bagshot
The Bricklayer’s Arms, Midhurst
The Spread Eagle Hotel, Midhurst
The Frensham Ponds Hotel, Rowledge?
The Bluebell, Rowledge?
The Star, Belgrave Square, London
The Talbot Hotel, Ripley
The Duke of Cumberland, Henley on the Hill
Hotel Albergo Reale, Modena
Auberge de la Garenne, Reims

and for Peter Collins

The Black Boy, Bewdley
L’Etoile, Paris
L’Action Automobile, Avenue d’Iena, Paris
Hotel Miami, Rue des Acacias, Paris
Fred Payne’s Bar, Rue Pigalle, Paris
The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn, Northern Ireland
The Angel Hotel, Bourne

Are any of these still in existence and worth visiting?

Black Boy in Bewdley is still there. Mike Hawthorn drove there after the death of Peter Collins.
On the peter Collins theme, there is also the Dog at Harvington also known as the Talbot, I believe that this was owned by Peter Collins Grandfather. This pub is right next door to where the Collins lived before Shatterford Grange and this is next door to the first garage owned by Peters father ( it is now a Skoda garage. Just down the road is St Marys Church where Peter is buried.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been following this thread for a while. Your picture is showing the bar at the entrance, the one closer to the rooms is nicer (and more convenient, depending on where in the hotel you are staying).

But, basically, any bar or restaurant near a circuit can be good during a race meeting, depending on the people that are there. Favourites near the Nurburgring also include Gasthaus Weber in Wiesemscheid, 5 km down the road, where they have the best Jägerschnitzels in town and Kölsch beer flowing rapidly... and the "Lanterna" pizzeria in Zermüllen.

A fortnight ago, I was at the Ferrari Maserati Finals in Monza and stayed in the Sant'Eustorgio Hotel in Arcore. Excellent restaurant and a beautiful collection of black- and white photographs on the wall and it took me a lot of effort to keep my colleague from taking the large Gilles Villeneuve picture with him...

I don’t no how many times the Clay Pup has changed the ownership, remaining only the name. Like al others bars at Lugano the people goes there on begin, after about a half maximal a full year this change and it’s very hard to balance the costs with the entrances.

Just found this thread. Cant see any mention of the Pit and Paddock Bar at the Master Robert Motel on the Great West Road near Heston. Walls and ceiling carried the signatures of just about every top driver of the 60's, proximity to Heathrow being a factor. I was last there on 31 Dec 1974 but understand it has long since been redecorated and all the graffiti lost - a great tragedy.

Star of Belgravia used to be where the taste of visiting the RACMSA (then in Belgrave Square) could be washed away with Fullers ESB?

My first drive was also at Pendine, aged six or so.
There was a restaurant in Manhattan which you could meet some well known motor racing people.
Interesting the mention of 'The Bugatti' near Prescott Hillclimb. Most of the entrants used The Royal Oak (or King's Head, I forget which) which was another mile up the road past the Bugatti, which had far better beer and more atmoshere. The Bugatti was actually crap; neither the owners or regulars were in the slightest bit interested in motorsport, with just one token Bugatti picture on the wall, unlike the Green Man, which is the only place you can pass Chris Amon on the way to your pit stop.
There used to be a tiny bar called 'Cesare's' in Porto Cesareo near the Speed Bowl of Nardo, barely bigger than the twist grip table football game in the middle of it. Ferrari, Mercedes Porsche BMW Lamborghini Renault, and Jaguar's highly secretive(!) teams crowded into this place at night competing in international table football games. Nobody could understand a word of each others languages until enough of the local vino had been consumed, at which point things would become incredibly noisy and competitive. I heard a Mercedes bloke ask his competitor across the table which city his football skill came from (in broken English). 'Coventry' came the short reply. The German said 'I don't know ver zat iss' the Englishman looked up for a second and said 'You should do, you bombed the bastard', at which point it suddenly went deathly quiet.........

I think that if you read this entire thread, you'll find references to 'Fridays' too. Now I don't remember that personally, but perhaps you will...?

Oh, and the first time my brother and I drove cars was on Pendine Sands too!

I know it's not a pub, but what is the restaurant in Buenos Aires that everyone used to go to? When I went there in 97 & 98 the place was covered in pictures of drivers/owners sat in the very restaurant. Indeed, on my 98 visit I was on the adjoining table to Damon Hill & all the Jordan Honda boys (food fight an' all)

If it was on Kensington High Street (north side) then yes, but don't ask me anything else :drunk:

Except one thing - I'm sure it was years after the RAM/Walker, Jones sponsorship in F5000...

Just found this at the back of a book shelf, guess about 1970 looks to be just pre decimalisation (in 1971) - they were getting people used to "new pence".

Just look at the prices .......anyone for a schooner of sherry at 3s/9d ! .......it would be at least 25 times that now !Posted Image http://img187.exs.cx...age=pub27fy.png

In Paris last week for Retromobile, I found www.relais-lagrange.com
Highly recommended for a motor racing ambiance - nostalgia oriented.
Bertrand Guichard has a wine bar/bar/restaurant dedicated to motor racing, complete with a slot-racing circuit which descends from the ceiling to fill an entire bar, which can be Montlhery, Goodwood, or various others. There's a large flat screen on which you can watch anything from Steve McQueen's Le Mans to the latest Goodwood revival DVD, along with a motor racing library. Free parking for "nostalgic cars" officially authorisied at a nearby bus stop at certain times, particularly Sundays. A big Jaguar following, and lots of British enthusiasts/clubs are associated.
I have absolutely no commercial connection with the place whatsoever, but I'm going back - the food and wines are great and very good value, the welcome almost over the top, and it's cheap to reach on my over 60's train pass!!
I shall suggest a TNF Paris meet-up there soon, when I'm certain that She Who Must Be Obeyed is visiting Maman en Angleterre, or sliding down an alp.

There's also been no mention of Hotel de France at La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, a hotel/restaurant with very close connections with Le Mans and a bar full of signed photos to die for. The restaurant is excellent, with a wine list to match, at very reasonable prices. The time to meet there is lunchtime the Friday of le Mans week - that's Friday 10 June this year. You'll find a range of virtually all marques of classic sports cars parked outside, with their owners chatting away in the bar and restaurant, and overspilling into the square. I'll be there. Again, no commercial connection.

It's amazing what you can overhear in the Sparkford Inn in Sparkford. Slap bang opposite Haynes Publishing's offices .... where long boozy pub lunches discussing forthcoming projects are not yet dead!

But my lips are sealed .... :cat:

Motor racing oriented pubs are very rare in Western Canada. TEJ might have some ideas but the only one I can think of is motor racing oriented because I was asked by the interior designer to supply a number of photos of local racing-at Westwood-strangley enough, many of the pictures had me in them somewhere! When I was spending most of my time in a classic/race car restoration shop we simply went to the nearest stripper bar so I suppose they had a racy theme (groan). There is a wonderful restaurant/pub in Seattle that has classic Ducati motorcycles everywhere....
Canada tends to be quite pc
