Yes. This. Yeah just finished Qualifying. So much for the so-called 'experts, like we said.

So, yeah, same as it ever was, at least in Q. After being told all thru winter testing and ever since by the 'experts' that McLaren were only quicker than Williams ... they're fifth. The same experts also had Merc behind Ferrari. Just goes to show how hard winter testing is to read ... even when you're trackside. If you don't know what you're looking at, then you don't know what you don;t know.

We'll see tonight though, how different race pace will be compared to Q.

They're saying others 'under performed' thus elevating McLaren who they expect to fall back during the race.  Yes, this may happen, but would it really have hurt to just congratulate the team on the result and admit that they were jaded about McLaren due to the teams under performance last year?  Even when they're shown to be wrong, they're still smug and entirely unlikable.

I'm not gonna watch that whole video (Cliff's Notes, anyone?), but I do really love how bewildered they appear at the result - as if winter testing is some very clear and easily readable process.

I'm ashamed to say I watched it - wanted to see if they would just say 'Ok, McLaren are much better than we've been painting them - we got that one wrong guys, sorry'... Never came.

Yeah of course not. I think I saw them say something like "Great performance by McLaren", and that was it. WTF?

Yeah, that was Edd while he was reading the results off his notes, but that was then almost immediately countered with other teams under performing and saying (in a roundabout fashion) that Norris was sort of in the right place at the right time, and nailed it.  Edd did say (credit were it's due) that McLaren trackside has been on it, both now and last season, even when they had a poor car.

Reading the comments from yesterday to today, I think I've got a touch of whiplash.

Great job by Norris on his first F1 qually.  That will surely give him a boost of confidence and relieve his nerves.  I really think that had Sainz made it through Q1 that he could have split the Haas, maybe even gotten ahead of both.  Unfortunately, I doubt anyone could have gotten the car any further up the field.  Fingers crossed for the first major upgrade.

If we say Sainz could have done a 22.0, then we're 1.5 off the lead, which is insurmountable but a significant improvement.  And less than a second off Vettel?  Call me crazy, but that's on the outside edge of possibility by the end of the season.  But it's Australia, which is always a bit mixed up, so no point in raising my expectations this early in the season.  For now, I'm just eager for the race to see if Norris can outpace Haas.

Still, with McLaren actually concentrating on development rather than fixing problems, maybe we can see the gap to the front slowly fall through the season.

I'm also eager to watch Sainz climb the field.  I think if he does well, it would go far to prove the ability of the car.   I'm really curious to see how well he does relative to Gasly.

As for the predictions, well we just have a single data point, but obviously the optimism in this thread wasn't undue.  I think my personal prediction for the season is on track (https://forums.autos...ting/?p=8665579 ), with Renault being the biggest surprise to me, and Haas maybe a bit quicker - though we'll see what their race pace is like and whether their drivers can keep out of trouble.

Marko and other so called journalists got the answer they wanted this weekend. Very happy for that. :)

There is more to come from the team and drivers. McLaren recovery has just started!

Encouraging start of the season. Nice lap by Chuck Norris.

I want to take something positive of Sainz's bad luck, let's see what the car and he can do right from the back.

Norris has done more in one race than Vandorne did in two years!

...just about.

Let's see what happens when Sainz has a decent qualifying as well. Always need a relative yardstick for things like this.

That said, I have high hopes of him :)

Great result for Lando today and I hope that translates into a decent season, shame about Sainz. I will hold fire though on declaring the McLaren a big step forward until we have had a few races.

He's actually not a bad pundit, but he got this completely wrong. Maybe he was towing the line?

And to be fair he was bob on about the Haas pace
