Ray Horst, 89, died May 7, 2010. He was last known to be living in Martinez, California. Horst raced sprint cars and stock cars in northern California in the 50's, including tracks like Bay Meadows and West Coast Speedway in Vallejo. Horst was erroneously listed as being fatally injured in a severe accident at that same Vallejo track, and the error carried over until researcher Rick Kelly found an article in the Contra Costa Times interviewing the then 80+ year old retired CHP officer about his life and career.

John Storr of Victoria, B.C., Canada, passed away last Friday. He raced a Titan Mk 5 Formula Ford (ex-Roy Pike?) at Westwood, etc. in the early 70s, and a Brabham BT29 in some Atlantic races in 1975 and 1976.
The Celebration of Life for John was held October 13. Here are some photos that were on display. The Brabham had modified front bodywork:

Long time Ontario Porsche racer Fritz Hochreuter passed away October 23. More at these links:

Also, Seattle historian Gary Bannister passed away October 18. More at these links:

And here is a link to some great car profiles done by Gary for Martin Rudow's Vintage Drift, the magazine of SOVREN, the Seattle vintage racing group:
http://www.rspubs.co...r-profiles.html
Gary's dad, Len Bannister, owned a Fiat Abarth Record Monza in period, which was raced by Verne Wheelwright. Gary was very involved in helping Martin Rudow with his Northwest racing history books. I believe Gary was as fanatic about local racing history as Tom Johnston, Martin Rudow, and me, which is saying something! He will be missed!

Barry Grant raced the Cheetah in 1968, the same car that had been raced previously by Allen Grant and Jerry Grant, none of them related.
As a GRANT myself i find it sad to hear the passing of Barry. Hope he had a good life that is what,s it all about. However the irony of the same car been driven by Allen & Jerry GRANT i find amazing ,and it is one of the all time favorite car of mine right from my slot car days.

An obituary by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists:
Even more time has passed since Kenya-born Canadian Hima Maher (07 April 1968 – 07 March 2009) perished in an avalanche in British Columbia.Former South African racing driver and international businessman Bruce van der Merwe died
Former South African racing driver Bruce van der Merwe has died in Switzerland at the age of 62 after suffering a heart attack while skiing with friends in the Alps.
Born and raised in Springs, he first tried his hand at motor racing at the age of 21. Between 1968 and 1971 he raced a Porsche 906 in the Springbok Series with his friend Clive van Buuren. Together they enjoyed many successes against prominent drivers from all over the world. He went on to race a Repco-Brabham BT20 in the South African motor racing drivers’ championship, which was then contested by Formula One and F5000 cars, a series unique in the world outside of the F1 world championship.
His racing took a back seat in 1973 when the Middle East oil crisis put a temporary halt to South African motor sport. He became a pharmaceutical salesman and, in 1979, began what was to be a stellar career with Johnson & Johnson. He started as a regional sales manager and, after being promoted to national sales manager, took up an international position at Johnson & Johnson in Germany in 1988.
He was appointed managing director of Johnson & Johnson Benelux, based in Holland, in 1991 and was responsible for it becoming one of the star companies in Europe. This led to his becoming international vice president of Johnson & Johnson based in Switzerland with responsibility for a group of companies across Europe and the Middle East.
He retired from Johnson & Johnson at the age of 55 and for the past seven years has built a successful eye laser clinic near Zurich in Switzerland. His success in business allowed him to return to motor racing and during the past 10 years he had several outings in his Chevron B19 in European rounds of the International Supersports Cup. A highlight was sharing the car with his son, Alan, in a two-hour race at Brands Hatch in the 2002, which they won.
He played an influential role in Alan’s career in motor sport, which saw the younger Van der Merwe win the prestigious British Formula Three championship in 2003. After a spell as a test driver for BAR-Honda in Formula One, Alan drove for A1 Team South Africa in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport in the 2006/2007 and 2008/2009 seasons and, now aged 30, is currently the driver of the FIA’s medical car in the Formula One world championship.
Bruce van der Merwe is survived by his wife Denise, daughter Tanya and son Alan.

Only recently did I learn that South African Bruce van der Merwe (06 May 1947 – 24 March 2010) died nearly one year ago in Davos, Switzerland.
Now that is a surprise, as I would've thought Alan's career would've brought that in focus more and made more news. Having heard of Bruce through many South African links, this is also a real shame.

Art Mankel, a long time dirt track racer in Arizona, and a member of the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame. Mankel raced just about anything possible on dirt.

Casey Stagno raced hardtops and modifieds in central and northern California in the 50's through the early 70's. From Manteca, Stagno's home track was Stockton 99 Speedway, where he was one of the top drivers in the mid-60's.

Stan Scheidecker began racing track roadsters in Illinois in 1946. A year later, he moved his family to San Bernardino, California where he enjoyed a long career on southern California tracks, and at his home track of Orange Show Speedway. Racing jalopies, super modifieds, stock cars and late model sportsman. Well liked by fans and fellow competitors alike, Scheidecker won the NASCAR late model sportsman title at OSS one year (I believe 1969, my materials are still packed at the moment). That earned the right to race in the Permatex 300 at Daytona, and Scheidecker did so in 1970. Three generations of the Scheidecker family raced at OSS, including sons Dave, Greg and Mike.

Oldest mechanic dies
The 500 lost one of its last remaining riding mechanics earlier this week when Harry Dean died in California. He was 97.
Dean rode with Ted Horn in the 1937 race, finishing third in the last year for two-man cars. That was the closest 1-2-3 finish to that point, a separation of about 12 seconds.
Speedway historian Donald Davidson said the last known remaining riding mechanic is Indianapolis resident Joe Kennelly, who rode with Johnny Seymour in 1936 and finished 31st.

With luck they'll all be back soon - it's frustrating not being able to access the early stuff.Due to ongoing stability problems - for which we apologise - we have temporarily removed the first three million posts from the forum's database.
Some long running threads will begin in early Feb 2008, while any older threads that remain accessible will have no content.
This is a temporary measure to see if the root cause of these problems is the size of the posts table. All these posts will be restored when the result of running the forum in this way becomes clear.
Thanks for your understanding.

A well known car and engine tuner from Alessandria, Italy, "Pino" Repetto as he was nicknamed, prepared the Ford Italy works rally cars until the 1990s.
In 1975 Renzo Zorzi won the Monaco Formula 3 GP at the wheel of a yellow GRD 374 fitted with a Lancia engine tuned by Pino Repetto.

From this source I reckon that Phil Chapman of Mercury fame died earlier this year (probably in April).
From an Italian forum I learned that Alceste Bodini passed away in autumn 2009.
And according to this website sometime in 2006 Jimmy Byrnes died.
Does anyone know details, i.e. exact dates?
Finally let me repeat a request from another thread:
Does anyone know on which date recently departed Jimmy Somervail was born?

James Alexander "Jimmy" Somervail was 87 according to this obituary. So the year of his birth must be 1924 or 1923.
EDIT: Thanks to Adam Ferrington I learned that he was born on 02 August 1923.

I would appreciate if someone could tell me more about the following passings:
...
From an Italian forum I learned that Alceste Bodini passed away in autumn 2009.
Alceste Bodini from Cremona, passed away in October of 2009 (don't know the day). A popular racer who always tuned his car by himself, his career spanned over three decades.
Bodini started in the late 1950s, becoming one of the first go-kart drivers in Italy in the 1960s. A Tecno car enthusiast, he drove the Formula Ford, Formula 850 and the Formula K-250 Tecnos, winning the Italian Championship in 1970 (the K-250 was a category of small single-seaters), before progressing to Formula 3. His ageing, successful, well-kept Tecno 68-Ford (then replaced by a 1971 model) was seen in the Italian series and also on European tracks, including Monaco, Nurburgring and Zandvoort, until the mid-1970s (in 1974 he finished 11th in the Polifac International Formula 3 Trophy), fighting against more modern Brabhams, GRDs and Lotuses. In the late 1970s he moved to historic racing, competing in Italian hillclimbs and circuit races for years at the wheel of his beloved Tecno Formula 3.
In 1972 Bodini took part in the 1000 Km of Monza, then a round of the Wold Sportscar Championship, in a private Chevron B19 owned by Luciano Rassega. Actually his nephew Matteo Bodini is a rally driver.
A sad loss.

He was well known for his many years of Mini Speedway racing and later Appendix J Mini racing.
Al also owned and operated Mini Central in the Perth metro area, where he was always there to give advise or fix someones broken down Mini. He always had a smile and a cuppa if you called in, he will be surely missed in the Mini community.
Rest in Peace Al.

Sad news. Just two months ago I've found a good article about her on a Speed-Age magazine, issue of the early 1950s (1954 if I remember well). Betty Skelton was regarded as a great boat-pilot, rather than a race car driver, an aviator and an adventurer. I did not know her story before, and started searching more informations. I was happy when I found that she was of the same age of my Mom and still with us.
Sadly, a few weeks later she passed away.

Not only Ian Sutherland (83), Hully Bunn (91), Reds Kagle (79) and Tony Everard (88) died recently but also – according to this site – former French F1 driver of the early 1960s, Bernard Collomb (80).
Thanks for the update, Reinhard. If that's a recent photo of him on the site, he looked pretty well for his age, not that it helps him now I suppose.

A closure of this thread is something I would hate to see.
Alternatively you could create the space by editing Post 1 to say "For deaths from 2011 onward see Post 400 on Page 10" or whatever number it is and move 2011.
When I suggested "Close the thread" it was in the context of "Close the thread and open a new Part 2 thread"
