I see on social media the sad news that Charlie Cook has passed away.Charlie was Head of Technical Matters for ALMS/IMSA from the start till a few years ago which is how I came to know him. Prior to that he had an extensive career as an engineer for various race series and teams. He also served with Daniel Perdrix, Chief Scrutineer at the Le Mans 24 Hours. He was a kind gentleman of the old school.RIP Charlie

Very sad news
OMG, another person who helped me along my racing career is gone!
I met Charlie in a motel bar the night before Sebring back around 1987 and ended up working with him on the Dodge GTU cars driven by Cal and Dorsey Schroeder. Charlie was a graduate of Auburn, Engineering Management and to this day I utilize the lessons he taught me on leading and managing a racing team and any other organization. "Just remember, a race team is run by consensus, but definitely is NOT a democracy." Upon my graduation from Temple, I was supposed to move down to B'ham to work on the next years cars. But the weekend we raced through the streets of Columbus, OH (the same weekend Al Holbert fatally crashed his plane) I met Wess Moss and Trevor Harris of Electramotive Engineering, Nissan GTP team. Which led to a job offer. I called Charlie to inform him of the offer, but I felt I had already accepted his opportunity, so he had first dibs on me. He told me that if I didn't take the offer he was going to come up there (Philadelphia) and kick my ass. "You work for them for a few years and then come back to me!" He also mentioned he told Dorsey the same thing when he told him he had been offered the Roush Trans Am drive.
RIP Charlie, you helped me is so many ways!

The other album was Uriah Heep Salisbury, which I have played endlessly for nearly 50 years, to this day thousands of plays, and would put the album on par with Tommy from The Who in terms of rock opera brilliance. An absolute masterpiece, and I’ve long been a bit surprised I appreciated it at such an age.
This album, and particularly its namesake song, absolutely played a part in my artistic development, but beyond that is a part of my soul, my passions, and my psyche. There’s times it still damned near brings me to tears in its sheer eloquence.
My first concert was Uriah Heep. Earth, Wind and Fire opened.

Joe Chamberlain passed away on Tuesday, March 3. He was 95. More info here:
From Martin Rudow's "Weekends of Glory"..."...'You're not trying hard enough,' groused Chamberlains' driving training instructor between sessions the first time he went out with the Mustang at Delta Park. Taking the advice to heart, the next time they went out Chamberlain overcooked it coming into a corner, shot off the track, skidded between two concrete structures next to the course, went through a patch of small willow trees, and back onto the track again, never lifting his foot. 'Say, there's hope for you after all,' observed the instructor...Chamberlain had been through scarier experiences. A radio/radar operator in the belly of a Grumman TBF Avenger, Chamberlain and his crew had taken off from carriers and specialized in night missions off Japan in the closing weeks of World War Two..."2008 Pacific Northwest Historics.Vince H.
I saw when first posted and was going to reply but did not even leave thumbs up for this one.
Fifteen or more years ago , I had a long telephone conversation with Joe about his Corvettes and racing history.
I had recorded the whole conversation but sadly the recording was lost.
He said when he built his second tube frame Corvette he took it in for SCCA scrutinizing and they told him , Nice car, here what is wrong , go rebuild it.
He said ever single pick-up point on a tube car had to be in exactly, and he said exactly the same point as the production car.
Exotic part were allowed as long as they fit the same place as the original.
He also said they tried to get the Shadow Can-Am teams Big Block Chevy but some one screwed up and a different team got them so they were stuck with the blown small block.
He also spoke highly of Rich Sloma and his Corvette saying he was great guy who just enjoyed racing. Joe gave Rich's Corvette a look over once and when he could literally move the radiator around he said "What about this?"
Rich told him well, it hasn't fallen off yet.
He also said Larry Stephens who bought his first Corvette was a very nice young fellow.
He said his proudest moment was when he won the premier race at local speed fest in his Corvette , beating Monte Shelton's Porsche 935 in the rain, with out rain tires.
He said they pitted for rain tires but he just kept on racing and he could go fast enough they never caught him.
He said if I ever got out his way I should look him up but sadly I never did.

Catching up on some other passings from the Western U.S. oval track scene in 2020:
Roland Wlodyka, 81, raced super modifieds at San Jose Speedway and the NASCAR super modified circuit in the 1970s. He won 8 feature races, which doesn't seem like much, but he was up against very stiff competition. He also briefly drove in NASCAR's top series, when a San Jose area car owner purchased a car and headed South. Realizing he was out of his element on the big tracks, he recommended Dale Earnhardt as a replacement. He stayed on as a team manager and in other capacities, even as late as working for drivers like Kevin Harvick. Sadly, Wlodyka has been a victim of borderline libelous comments circulating around the internet about his alleged incompetence and lack of ability (why would he have been employed by so many if he was?).
Jack Epperson, 82, "The Racing Auctioneer," raced super modifieds at San Jose and on the NASCAR super modified circuit in the 1960s and 1970s. After relocating to Redding, in the northern part of the state, he did his racing at Shasta Speedway.
Jack Clegg raced jalopies and the San Diego Racing Association modified sportsmen (super modifieds) in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the 1963 and 1966 SDRA champion.
Larry Cordeiro, another driver on the NASCAR Super Modified circuit in the 1970s, and a particularly well-liked one, died on either July 27 or 28, 2020. Sorry, no further details as his passing was only mentioned on Facebook, as is so sadly common nowadays.
Larry Vicory, 83, raced super modifeds and sprint cars out of the Sacramento, California area from the 1950s on, and was a top ten driver in the CSRA super modifieds in the late 1960s.
Sam Rose, who began racing stock cars out of San Bernardino, California in the 1960s, raced on the Southern California NASCAR circuit, NASCAR's Western series, then moved to Yakima, Washington in 1970, where he raced locally and eventually on NASCAR's NW Tour.
Bob Hogle, 87, began his career in jalopies on Southern California tracks, moving on to super modifieds and SDRA modified sportsmen before going on to sprint cars. A two-time CRA sprint car champion (1963 & 1968), he won 63 feature races in the CRA, primarily driving the famed Morales Brothers "Tamale Wagon." He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2001.
Walt Pickard, 88, raced from 1957 through 1972 out of Pueblo, Colorado. A four-time track champion in Pueblo, he raced against Bobby and Al Unser and competed in the Hutchinson Nationals super modified race. After his on track days, he became a track manager, promoter and track owner. He is a member of the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame and Greater Pueblo Sports Associaiton Hall of Fame.
Bill Lauff, 80, raced micro (modified) midgets and stock cars at tracks around the Sacramento Valley Twin Cities of Yuba City and Marysville in the 1960s and 1970s.

Always very appreciated, Reinhard. Two comments, if I may. Unless you know something I don't, Beurlys was Belgian and Carlos Gaspar is missing from the Portuguese.

Thanks.
Hicks is added, Beurlys is corrected.
Gaspar died in 2021, not 2020, according to GMiranda's post.

Dont't turn this into a Covid death blather.
My sig. other , if she gets she will die, but I am sick and tired of the constant virus death toll while ignoring the other miseries of life.
Obits in our newspaper , some , now point out some one DID NOT die of Corona Virus, it is sickening.

You're right about Gaspar. My mistake
Yes, Gaspar died a few days ago after a long illness. The last time I saw him, by December 2019, he didn't look properly well already. It might have been already the disease that killed him..

There were several passings in 2020 with only incomplete info known to me regarding dates.
Australia: Denis Geary, Gordon Hardy, Rob Janney, Jim McConville, Jim Phillips, Jim Winterbottom, John Wynne
Canada: John Nissen
Great Britain: Stephen Day, Jock Simpson
USA: Charlie Cook, Leon Fitzgerald, Tom Hanna, Jim Miller, Bill Stephens
Any help would be appreciated.
